I think there's a few teams with lesser lines than the Bears, but as far as this game goes. When is the last time you've seen something like this? Though you also said you thought Cutler had time. So :confused

i didn't say he had lots of time, but the blocking was no better on their touchdown drive than it was earlier so i guess i was right, during the first few drives he did have time, he just didn't figure out how to work it until their last drive! :D

You are seriously crazy if you think Cutler had time. I just don't understand what game you're watching. Again we will not agree on this. Everyone else, including Troy Aikman calling the game, seemed to feel this way.

like i said, i don't think he's had lots of time, i just think early in the game he had no idea how to deal with it. he's doing better now. he has adjusted and isn't even trying to hold on to the ball a long time so it is working.

you need to adjust he had time to make throws early in the game, but he got hit and sacked because he was looking for more time. now he knows he's not getting it and he's adapted to the situation

DMBZeppelin
09-19-2010, 02:40 PM
We need Martz to call a smart game here on out. The key to this entire game was that first TD drive. Once we showed we could pick them apart on quick passes they stopped blitzing. That TD pass to Olsen was basically on the first step off his backfoot. If that's what it takes, keep showing that from time to time. I don't want Martz to get too hell bent on stretching the field. If he gets stuck on that we'll get blitzed and continue to suck.

Crunching some numbers here. Since Cutler turned the corner in that Vikings game last year. Here's what he's done his last 4 games:

86/135 (63.7%) 1,198 yards (8.87 YPA) 13 TD's and 2 INT's (118.1 QB Rating)

If you project that over 16 games:

344/540 (63.7%) 4,792 yards (8.87 YPA) 52 TD's and 8 INT's (118.1 QB Rating)

The Bears are now 4-0 in their last four games. Cutler has had 100+ QB rating in each. During his 18 game Bears career they are 5-0 when Cutler doesn't throw a pick. Cutler is now 17-0 when he has a QB rating of 100+. The only QB with 10+ to be undefeated.

I like how the offense looked. I am a little worried that we are rellying a little much on some huge plays to get us points (although that is football).

Im worried about what happened in the Lions game though, we had the opprotunity to score several more touchdowns or field goals and they were wasted efforts because the O-Line couldnt get it done.

Does anyone else see this or is it just me being slightly less informed than yall?

Was that Cutler's best game with the Bears yesterday? I mean, he had to deal with the enormous pressure early and managed to throw the ball away without making any bad decisions, and adapted by getting rid of the ball very quickly, and ended up having a nearly perfect game.

However, that Dallas defense isn't really healthy and they aren't the most fearsome in the league anyway. It will be more interesting to see what we do against better defenses.

Their front seven is beastly, and they have a great corner in Newman. They're a good D, and once Cutler figured them out with Martz using all of those motions to give Jay time to read the defense, he was able to just fling it out.

I'd have to say yes. Because he put up those numbers with that pressure, with what many consider lesser talent as a supporting cast. Most QB's who work under those conditions fail. Some Cowboys players agree:

Bradie James thought it was a matter of time before DeMarcus Ware and the Dallas Cowboys finished off Jay Cutler.

''I thought he was going to lose his cool, and he didn't,'' James said.

''I thought we really had him rattled and he bounced back and made some [great] throws,'' James said. ''He got away from the rush and he was accurate with the deep ball. I just have to say [that] he played well.''

''I can recall five rushes D-Ware beat his guy clean, but the ball was out,'' Cowboys defensive end Marcus Spears said. ''That's what they did.''

Linebacker Keith Brooking added unwittingly high praise when he referred to Cutler and ''the weapons he has'' for making big plays. That might be the first time Cutler's wide receivers have been referred to as weapons.

''A lot of quarterbacks in this league, when you show the pressure that we showed -- and we were hitting him early on -- they'll fold their tent and go home,'' said Brooking, who had a share of a sack of Cutler nullified by his own personal foul penalty. ''But he showed a lot in the way he stayed in the pocket and made some big plays in the passing game that broke our back.''

Cutler has transformed into a new man (http://www.csnchicago.com/09/23/10/Cutler-has-transformed-into-a-new-man/landing.html?blockID=317037&feedID=661)

With his play against the Dallas Cowboys, Jay Cutler placed himself in the discussion for offensive player of the week. Selectors are rightly impressed by things like throwing no interceptions, passing for 277 yards and 3 touchdowns, and finishing with just 8 incompletions out of 29 pass attempts.

But, it was in fact those eight failed connections that may have been among the most important passes thrown by Cutler in the 27-20 win.

Of the eight incompletions, four were throw-aways. The play-by-play shows them as passes near no one in particular, but they were exquisitely targeted, as far as the Bears were concerned:

“Pass thrown out of bounds….”

“…incomplete fly pattern; [Dallas DB Alan] Ball closest at the Dallas 5…”

“…incomplete at the Dallas 18; [Dallas DB Gerald] Sensabaugh closest defender….”

“…. Pass thrown out the end zone..”

“Jay threw the ball away ‘effectively,’” tight end Desmond Clark said. "And when’s the last time you could say someone threw balls away effectively.”

Not The Cutler Way

“Effectively” would not have been the term leaping to mind in 2009 for a number of Cutler throws.

The 2009 Cutler threw 4 interceptions in his first 74 attempts, or one every 18.5 passes. The 2010 Cutler has thrown 1 interception in his first 65.

All four of those interceptions, not coincidentally, came against the Green Bay Packers. The Bears lost that game despite Cutler throwing for 277 yards – the same total he achieved against Dallas, but with no interceptions and a decidedly different outcome.

Instead of forcing throws into places he shouldn’t, Cutler has become a quarterback willing to throw a ball to an equipment cart, if the cart’s the only guy open. The difference is not in Cutler’s arm, but rather his head.

“Every quarterback matures a little bit as their career goes on,” Cutler acknowledged while explaining the different “types” of throw-aways he was called on to make. “The throwaways against Dallas, I didn’t really have a choice. It wasn’t like I sat there and sat there and didn’t have anybody open. I was flushed out of the pocket, so that’s a little bit different. We’re still taking chances in this offense, we’re still pushing the ball down there, we’re still throwing it through some tight windows….

“ sacks and throwing it away, that’s part of it. That’s a 10-yard loss, and a sack’s going to be better than a turnover. Take either one of them.”

[B]Picking his times as well as spots

Cutler is leading the NFL with a 121.2 passer rating. But the size of the number is not as important as another aspect of how the Bears’ quarterback is playing.

Cutler was one of the NFL’s worst fourth-quarter passers in 2009, ranking 26th with his 73.4 passer rating in fourth quarters. His eight interceptions led the NFL for fourth-quarter picks.

Against Dallas, with the game in the balance, Cutler was 5-for-5. With the Bears trailing 14-13 in the fourth quarter against Detroit, Cutler was 6-for-9.

In neither fourth quarter did he throw an interception. In both fourth quarters, he threw for a deciding touchdown. Cutler ranks second only to Peyton Manning (157.0) in fourth-quarter passing at 148.5.

Cutler, however, is spreading credit around nearly as well as he does the ball.

“We’re getting there,” Cutler said. “It’s a process, still. I think we’re all still learning offensively – receivers and tight ends and running backs and Mike [Martz] himself is learning about us, so it’s definitely still a process.”

Sorry, Lovie. Despite your team's record, it's going to be a tough year.

Intrigued fans are dying to know whether they’re real or fake.

I’m talking about the NFL’s eight undefeated teams, of course.

Predicting whether a squad will go boom or bust isn’t easy after just two weeks. Nine clubs were 2-0 last season, including the eventual Super Bowl representatives. New Orleans and Indianapolis proved, to borrow a famous line from Seinfeld, real and spectacular. But four other teams – Denver, San Francisco, Atlanta and the New York Giants – eventually sagged and missed the playoffs altogether.

Here are my picks on which of this year’s 2-0 clubs will augment their fast starts with more wins and which can be considered the league’s version of Heidi Montag.

FAKE

Chicago

There’s a lot to love about this team so far. Chicago’s defense is thriving like the Monsters of the Midway – a theme that embattled head coach Lovie Smith pushed throughout the preseason. The Bears also have far more offensive flash under new coordinator Mike Martz than at any point during Ron Turner’s five seasons at the helm.

But I get the sneaking suspicion quarterback Jay Cutler isn’t going to finish the season because of his mediocre offensive line. Even the Nip/Tuck surgeons couldn’t beautify the ugly unit assembled by general manager Jerry Angelo. If Cutler ultimately goes down – four home-and-away games against Minnesota and Green Bay are especially perilous – the backup options are Todd Collins and Calib Hanie. Season over.

I don't know if I'd classify the Bears as fake, and predicting injuries is a crapshoot, but judging solely by Martz's track record with QB injuries, Cutler's odds of playing all 16 games of this season are not ideal. the quality of the Bears' line does not make Cutler's odds any better.

The first INT you don't make that throw in the redzone. I get what he wanted. Olsen was suppose to run a deep post. That near 2nd INT was just plain stupid. I hope this doesn't snowball into a night from hell. Maybe a 5 INT kinda night?

If anyone can do it, Jay Cutler can.

Maybe that is what he's shooting for. :lol

We can't pass, we can't run, we can't block, we can't get a sack, we can't tackle. We fix all those things. We got a chance.

Bron Yr Aur

We've run it ok tonight. We've played ok on offense. We should have some points for sure. But a missed FG and an INT from the 25 yd line and no defense.....we're gonna get our asses kicked.

Honestly, I'm not sure why we just don't blitz the shit out of these guys. Even when we run a three-man rush we still can't stop Rodgers so we might as well bring some pressure and try to rattle him.

I don't think we 'need' the lead. Just keep the game close. Now if GB goes and scores a TD it's a two-possession game. TAKE. THE. POINTS.

I like when coaches gamble.

The points would be great. I would have been happy if they kicked the field goal. But, I don't hate the call the go for it in the situation. Good teams convert. It was the 1 yard line...
