I'm not totally against giving Briggs a raise. No way I'd do it unless his current deal is extended for two more years. Then we'd have him through all the worth while years of his career if we don't cut him first. Urlacher turned 33 earlier this year. Briggs will turn 31 later this season. We need to add depth to the position, but probably in 2 years start using 1st or 2nd round draft picks on linebackers.

Briggs unpleasant diversion for Bears
(http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/football/bears/ct-spt-0828-bears-haugh-chicago--20110828,0,6613158.column)
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Thank Lance Briggs (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/football/lance-briggs-PESPT007765.topic) for sparing you another round of overanalysis after the Bears (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/football/chicago-bears-ORSPT000036.topic)' 14-13 loss to the Titans (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/football/tennessee-titans-ORSPT000061.topic) on Saturday night at LP Field.
Yes, the offense looked more efficient with Matt Forte running as if he were ready for the Falcons — and a new contract. And an improved defense did little to inspire either faith or fear.
But suddenly and unexpectedly, the Bears face another unwelcome off-the-field issue that potentially threatens their success on it.
Lance Briggs missed his second straight game with a knee bruise, but something more ominous nags him that's unlikely to heal soon. Briggs believes he deserves a raise and wants one sooner rather than later. If the Pro Bowl linebacker doesn't get a new contract before the end of the season, the Tribune has learned he has made clear he will demand a trade.
But until then Briggs privately has vowed to play as hard as ever, but without an extension, he will define the term disgruntled employee. Is an angry linebacker a bad thing?
Briggs' dissatisfaction, which he confirmed to the Tribune without comment, comes after weeks of hand-wringing over Forte seeking a contract extension. Briggs had hoped to wait until after Forte signed a new deal to make clear what he wanted but came forward after those talks dragged.
The result: Two weeks before the start of the regular season, two of the Bears' most valuable players face possible distractions while wondering how much the franchise truly values them. That's not ideal for a team that regards chemistry and leadership as highly as the Bears do.
This isn't just general manager Jerry Angelo (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/football/jerry-angelo-PESPT0000011502.topic)'s problem or coach Lovie Smith (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/football/lovie-smith-PESPT008481.topic)'s problem. This is Halas Hall's problem.
This isn't likely to go away, either, because I see no way the Bears buckle to Briggs. Just as hard to imagine is Briggs backing down quietly, especially after agent Drew Rosenhaus gets involved.
We learned during Rosenhaus' 2007 Pay Lance Briggs Tour what drives 55: money. He is an elite linebacker conspiring with a shrewd businessman. It can be a potent one-two punch.
But the Bears see no reason to rip up a contract with three years remaining for a 30-year-old who doesn't rush the passer, even if Briggs has made six Pro Bowls and the team has no depth at linebacker. The Bears consider the way the team front-loaded the six-year, $36 million deal Briggs signed in 2008 a fair trade-off for the linebacker's relatively modest $3.9 million base salary in 2011.
But they might not realize the depths of Briggs' disenchantment.
Briggs is bothered by the perception the Bears don't take his demands seriously. Without Rosenhaus at his side, Briggs expressed his contract concerns early in training camp. According to a source, Briggs asked the Bears to flip his base salary in 2013 — when he is due $6.25 million — with this season's. Angelo basically told Briggs he signed the contract and has to live with it. Somewhere, Scottie Pippen (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/basketball/scottie-pippen-PESPT005853.topic) can relate.
Briggs contends the Bears have as much as $19 million under the salary cap and he deserves a higher wage than less proven, younger linebackers flush with new money.
Interestingly, when Brian Urlacher (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/football/brian-urlacher-PESPT008387.topic) went public with unpopular demands for a new contract in 2008, the Bears eventually acquiesced. They rescinded the final four years of Urlacher's deal and signed him to a one-year, $18 million extension.
To Briggs, that established a precedent for stars he seeks to follow. To the Bears, they are entirely different situations because Urlacher never tested the free-agent market to drive up the price of his second contract the way Briggs did. Pushing the issue could force the Bears to point out that management believes, as productive as Briggs is, Urlacher's face has defined the franchise the past decade.
I will say this about Briggs' unexpected protest: He has more of a right to make contract demands than Forte or any other veteran in line for an extension. No other defensive player has been more consistent in recent years. At least Briggs has made a Pro Bowl.
As impressive as Forte ran against the Titans and as underpaid as he might be, he needs another season averaging more than 4 yards per carry before the Bears open the vault. Forte will have to make more realistic demands before the Bears can justify providing the long-term contract security he seeks.
In the short term for the Bears, conflicting personal agendas loom. We don't know whether all the unwanted preseason angst over finances will affect the regular-season football. But as the Bears left the Music City, they were a team still in search of harmony.
Didn't realize this got lost as the last post on the last page. Someone has to have thoughts on this.

My guess is Lovie told him what he told him. Which Lovie is now saying he only told him he wouldn't play in the last game. Wasn't in the plans for the game not the year. I think Lovie was being nice to Taylor and giving him a heads up. I don't think the Bears will release him till after the 4th pre-season game. Forte is not likely to get any carries. Barber is going to miss the game. So with Bell getting a heavy workload what if he got hurt? Taylor is the break glass for emergency option heading into the regular season. He's a veteran who knows the system.

If you judge the team based on the tenure of JA and Lovie the Bears are not at the bottom of the league. I understand Ja isn't really flashy and isn't love amongst fans, but he's not bad. I can list teams that have had much less success in the past decade. The Bears sure as hell don't waste too much money...

Sources: Bears offer Matt Forte deal
Contract negotiations between the Chicago Bears and running back Matt Forte have heated up to the point where the team has extended a contract offer worth $13-14 million guaranteed, a Bears source said Thursday to ESPNChicago.com.
Sources had said Wednesday that the offer approached the neighborhood of $15 million. The potential total value and length of the deal weren't disclosed.
Given recent statements by general manager Jerry Angelo and with the clock ticking on regular-season opener, it appears negotiations are likely coming to a close whether or not Forte agrees to the deal.
The Bears source said the sides are coming into the home stretch and that the organization remains optimistic about consummating the deal before the Sept. 11 start of the regular season.

Briggs, agent formally ask Bears for trade
Agent asks Bears front office for permission to seek trade for LB
Agent Drew Rosenhaus has filed a formal request to seek a trade on behalf of Lance Briggs, the Bears linebacker told the Tribune.
"The Bears made their decision, now I have to make mine," Briggs said. "It's just how the business works. It's not going to take away from what I do on the field. I'm 100 percent a Bear, until I'm not a Bear anymore."
The six-time Pro Bowl selection recently approached the Bears about a raise, but upper management has not budged. Rosenhaus made the trade request via an email to contract negotiator Cliff Stein.
The Bears had no comment on the issue Thursday, and their stance on the trade request remains unclear. They are about $19.3million below this season's salary cap.
If they were to grant him permission to seek a trade, Briggs and his agent could approach other teams to see if something could be worked out.
Briggs has three years left on his contract and is scheduled to make $3.9 million this season (including bonuses), $4 million in 2012 and $6.5 million in 2013. He signed a six-year, $36 million deal in 2008 after first testing the free-agent market, and the maximum value of the first three years was $21.6 million.
Briggs wants the Bears to restructure his contract in a manner that would increase his salary this season, possibly by flip-flopping the $3.9 million with the $6.5 million in the final year.

Looks like Stelz, Conte, and Bell will all be ok.
I have to say, while the preseason didn't showcase anything great, at least Cutler didn't get killed. The O-line looked decent. Akoye seems like he'll add to our pass rush. Sanzenbacher was a steal. Too bad we open against Atlanta and New Orleans... if we end up 1-1 we're good!

I kind of agree with this. He signed the fucking contract. It's not like it was his rookie contract. If you sign the deal, you should be expected to play out the contract. I mean, what the fuck Briggs? Now you want to go looking for a trade when you have 3 more years on the deal?

I dislike Briggs more and more. The guy is a beast on the field, but seriously man, shut your yap and play football. You bitched your way into a big contract 3 years ago - the gave you the big money up front and also gave you a big # on the last year of the deal ($6 mil) so you'll be rewarded if you continue to play at a high level into your 30's.
Good luck with that trade demand. He has no leverage whatsoever.

He's signed for 3 more years. He can complain all he wants. Unless some amazing deal comes along, which I doubt it will, Chicago better hold onto him. I mean he almost over the hill. What would somebody give up for him?
Plus whoever trades for him will have to invest in him. He's great, but basically I feel like Chicago shouldn't trade him. They should torture him for signing a 6 year deal but only wanting to play 3 years of it.
Most time I side with the players, but honestly it's fucking 2 weeks before the season starts...now he's demanding a trade??!?!

Robert Hughes, Kris Adams, Andre Smith, Ricky Henry, Levi Horn, Jordan Miller, Patrick Trahan, and Anthony Walters also cut today.
So surprisingly DE Nick Reed and FB, Will Ta'ufo'ou look like they're sticking around. In addition to FIVE undrafted rookies WR Dane Sanzenbacher, TE Kyle Adams, DE Mario Addison, LB Dom DeCicco, and S Winston Venable.
The final move to get down to 53 was rookie linebacker J.T. Thomas being placed on injured reserved for a "back" problem. He didn't look great in the pre-season, and the Bears will probably sign a veteran linebacker if someone good gets cut.

Pratice squad has 7 of 8 spots filled:
Kris Adams WR Texas El Paso
Ricky Henry G Nebraska
Levi Horn T Montana
Jordan Miller DT Southern
Andre Smith TE Virginia Tech
Patrick Trahan LB Mississippi
Anthony Walters S Delaware
Adams and Smith had really good camps/pre-season. Some people thought Henry was going to make the team. I'm curious to see if our 8th spot goes to whoever we cut to make room for Meriweather.

Meriweather's biggest problem in NE was freelancing. Chicago mostly plays two-deep where safeties are supposed to stay deep.

For the moment undrafted rookie Armando Allen a running back from ND is the 8th guy on our practice squad. We waived Joshua Moore to make room for Meriweather. Considering Moore is our best cover corner I'm sure they will attempt to sign him to the practice squad. It's not good that a 5th round draft pick from a year ago is off the roster.

meriweather was solid, but made way too many mistakes. he made some big hits on players that didnt see him or were already slowed down by someone else. he tried to do his own thing too much on the field. and he also made a lot of tackles on 3rd and long after allowing the receiver to cross the first.

Well, the season starts tonight...
I feel cautiously optimistic about our chances this year. Like most teams we have some questionable starters, but that's part of the game.
In my opinion was had a good off season. I thought the draft went great. We didn't sign any blockbuster free agents but we added guys who should contribute. The most important thing is Chicago has no major injuries yet. Hopefully that lasts.
As for Sunday, I feel like we will win. That's not so say I'll be surprised if we lose or get torched...but it's the home opener against a great team. If Cutler is ever going to be the man, it's going to be this year...
Hopefully we contain Julio Jones at least... I'm playing against him in 2 of my leagues...

I'm with you, the Lions are getting too much love...
In my opinion injuries are going to hurt this team. We all know Stafford has issues. But, I personally think Javid Best is going to end up injured. He alread had a concussion this preseason, last year he had turf toe all year, and in college he had that huge concussion. I don't seeing him last 16 games in 2011.
Also, Fairly is a HUGE question mark. Part of the reason they are getting so much love is because of the D-line...but, Fairly dropped for a reason.
I get people hating on Chicago. Cutler is a bastard. Everyone on our team seems too spurn the media. Too bad the Packers looked so fucking deadly last night...

Well, theoretically our offense is better. But we did lose Greg Olsen in favor of Roy Williams and that could backfire. The o-line looks better but you never know until the season starts.
The D should be good as always, but a lot of our key players do keep getting older and at some point maybe they are due for a down year?
I think Cutler has to continue to improve and definitely have his best season as a Bear or we have no chance at the playoffs.

Next week sucks for me. I have Brees and Cutler. Cutler + dome + Saints defense = WINNING! Brees on the other hand is Brees. Very capable of lighting up the Bears, but I don't really remember him doing that in the past... so as crazy as it sounds I might start Cutler.

I'll have to play it by ear and see if Romo looks even halfway decent against the Jets D tonight. I do happen to like the Cowboys matchup against the 49ers next week though.

He just read Cutlers eyes. Good block tip return. Good to see all the Bears defensive players ripping and poppinging the ball out. I have a feeling we are gonna be '06 caliber on defense this years. Massive turnovers this year I'm betting.

yesterday was such an awesome day. Bairce looked great, and I purchased my ticket to the game at Wembley against Tampa Bay! Finally going to be going to my real first NFL game (excluding a game I saw when I was like 12 when we were playing at U of I for the year)
SO EXCITE!
Tickets were only £82 each.. so like $130.
Not bad!

Well, that was an AMAZING home opener. Here are some thoughts I had about week one and next weeks game.
1) The new kickoff rule somehow didn't ruined the kick returns. We are seeing a lot more touchbacks, but it feels like we didn't see less big returns. How many did we see in the NFL this week? At least 4-5 I think. Cobb/Harvin/Ginn...who else? That's good news for Bears fans.
2) This might be the best season opener our front 4 has had in recent memory. The entire D-line was on fire. Matty Ice got destroyed. Lovie's D worked to perfection week 1. Melton looked like a superstar. Peppers looked liked he hasn't lost a step.
3) Urlacher apparently isn't as over the hill as the talking heads proclaim him to be. Seriously, #54 looked great. For whatever reason the media always harps on the age of Chicago's D. But, it's comparable to the Ravens and the Steelers. I would like to go out on a limb and say the Bears D was the best looking unit so far in week 1.
4)We actually might be able to contend with the Packers. After listening to every analyst crown the Packers the best team in the league, I started seriously doubting whether Chicago had the ability to really compete with top tier teams. Hopefully we stroll into week 3 unbeaten...
5)We actually scored in the red zone. We actually completed several important 3rd downs. Cutler got sacked but not killed. Our O didn't look nearly as confused and scared as it did the majority of last year. Our WRs don't feel like a liability. Hotlanta isn't the Ravens, but they have a pass rush. Other than Chris "The Revolving Door" Williams, they looked pretty good...

Heard Zaidman on the Score say the Bears are 54-10 since 2004 (when Lovie became coach) when scoring 18 or more points. I have to say I think the only thing that would cause us to lose to the Saints is how loud that place can get. If the noise causes offensive problems and it leads to INT's, ect. then the Saints might have a shot. This offense will score points on a shaky Saints defense. Brees has never really tore us up. Lance Moore and Colston should both be out. Kreutz didn't look too good against the Packers. Can he stop Melton? Special teams should be pretty equal. Sproles looks like a great addition for the Saints. If the Bears offense can match last week's production (which should have Barber back) I like us against the Saints.
Things will get scary week 3 against the Packers though.

The second half schedule is really easy and if the Bears can go 5-3 to start they can basically walk into the playoffs. Even if they go 4-4 to start, anything worse than 10-6 would be disappointing given how easy the last 8 games are.
