Roy Williams looks old and slow. He'd probably also be cut by the Rams.
.
Wrong
You are the only person claiming our receiving core isn't the worst. Not sure we're watching the same games.
.
I'm sure I'm not the ONLY PERSON claiming our WRs aren't the WORST in the leqgue. They aren't. You are wrong.
We aren't asking for franchise linemen. How about people who can block? Bryant McKinnie wouldn't look too bad right now would he? Look at the Packers. Their left tackle goes down and they insert Newhouse who's done a great job. He was the last pick in the 5th round of the 2010 draft. Who did we take much earlier that round? Joshua Moore who has since been released..
Newhouse gave up 2 sacks yesterday. So, he didn't do as well against the Vikings as our OL. But, no reason to give our guys credit.
I should just kep it to myself since you seem to have super secret info on former players agreeing our WRs are the worst in the league. Worst? Far from it.

We're looking ok.
The Lions aren't unbeatable. Hell if they lose next week we'll be looking to be tied in 2nd place. I'm not terrified of the Eagles, but that will be a tough game. But, if Chicago wins that, they head home to try and even up against the Lions...

Bears studying free agent pool (http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/football/bears/ct-spt-1027-bits-bears-chicago--20111027,0,3856051.story)
By Brad Biggs and Vaughn McClure
In a slow week with just two practices the Bears (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/football/chicago-bears-ORSPT000036.topic) are watching available free agents.
An NFL (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/football/national-football-league-ORSPT000007.topic) source said the team has put six players through tryouts at Halas Hall, a group including two safeties and three veteran defensive linemen.
In for a close look at Halas Hall was safety Darcel McBath, a Broncos (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/football/denver-broncos-ORSPT000040.topic) second-round draft pick in 2009, and fellow safety Tom Nelson (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/football/tom-nelson-PESPT0012835.topic), a Hersey product out of Illinois State who spent the last two seasons with the Bengals (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/football/cincinnati-bengals-ORSPT000037.topic). The Bears have struggled at safety but there is no indication the team will sign either player.
McBath was one of the Broncos' final cuts in September and he has been on the tryout circuit, recently working out for the Cowboys (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/football/dallas-cowboys-ORSPT000039.topic), Texans (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/football/houston-texans-ORSPT000043.topic) and Raiders (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/football/oakland-raiders-ORSPT000053.topic).
Three veteran defensive linemen also got a look, Chauncey Davis, Keyunta Dawson and Jovan Haye. Davis is a veteran who spent the previous six seasons with the Falcons (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/football/atlanta-falcons-ORSPT000032.topic). Dawson previously played for the Colts (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/football/indianapolis-colts-ORSPT000044.topic). Haye has been with four teams since 2005 and spent the previous two seasons with the Titans (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/football/tennessee-titans-ORSPT000061.topic). It could be the Bears want to stay up to date with available players for their emergency list.
The Bears also looked at Reggie Stephens, a center from Iowa State who made a pre-draft visit to Halas Hall in 2010. He was a seventh-round pick by the Bengals last year.

Yeah, it must have nothing to do with the fact he's been torched and looked to be playing on the same level as Major Wright...
Oh and I read this on ESPN today....
Stat to note: Forte ranks No. 37 in the NFL in the percentage of his total rushing yards that have come after contact (43 percent), according to ESPN Stats & Information. That's not a knock on Forte as much as it is a credit to the Bears' run blocking. It means Forte has gained 383 of his 672 total yards before a defender has touched him.

They've excelled at run blocking. It's been one of the best years I can remember since Lovie has been here. Sometime out OL struggles pass blocking. But, we talk like Cutler is the only QB to be sacked this season. Is it crazy to think young players with ability can improve under a great coach? Great stat but do you actually watch our run plays? Forte displays great patience and anticipation. Despite people being out of position he uses his cutbacks to great effect and gets extra yards. One thing our o-line does well though is using athleticism to get our guards outside on stretch and sweeps. Though the Bucs really took it away in the 2nd half of the last game.

Do you watch this o-line? No one has gotten sacked more than Cutler. No one has been sacked in more consecutive games than Cutler. You act like "Oh this is just a decent line." when everyone laughs at what a joke it is. Do you watch how many missed assignments they blow with regularity? How many times they just lose their matchups one on one? Oh great the line didn't look like complete shit against a beat up d-line missing Gerald McCoy... guess it's all sunshine from here.
The Bears are a good team. If our receivers and o-line were as good as you claimed? We'd have won the Super Bowl last year. We'd probably be 2 wins better than we are right now. Well, maybe you haven't been watching the Chicago Bears. Specials Teams play adds value.
1) Chris Harris clearly lost a step.
2) Chris Harris doesn't play special teams
3) Chris Harris has a big mouth
I like Chris Harris. But, lets be honest he's just as middle of the road as our current guys except he can't contribute on ST, one of our strongest phases of the game. Plus, he seems like his mouth didn't help him. Asking for a trade didn't help him. We can visually see he's lost a step. Who is Chris Harris to DEMAND a trade? He made his own bed. The Bears are 4-3, if JA can sign Forte suddenly we go from the team with THREE contract squabbles, to 1...Lance Briggs...who ironically has years left on his deal.
I personally never played safety. But, it's not as if Harris blowing coverages and letting up huge plays with a mix of bad position and lack of speed is going to be missed. I'll miss his name and seeing him as a Bear. But, it's football stuff like this happens every year to tons of teams...and I concur Meriweather is just as brutal...just without all the lip service.

What do you think? Yes I watch the line play. I've watched them give up fewer and fewer sack since the season has gone on. I've watched our coaches adjust to the rushing schemes the were giving them the most trouble.
I agree Forte is playing great. But, he hasn't always looked so great. Since he's been here we've never had such athetic linemen. The pulling is amazing. Maybe you're not watching the games, on several of Forte big runs outside I've watched pulling linemen plow over defenders. That is something that wasn't happening last year at this time. Not even close.
Do you watch this o-line? No one has gotten sacked more than Cutler. No one has been sacked in more consecutive games than Cutler. There is difference between being decent and being the worst. That is were we differ. I see a decent line that has made progess since Week 1. You seemingly see the same line that was playing against the Giants last year.
Maybe you aren't the one watching the game. The line doesn't give up all the sacks. If you look at sack totals for the past few weeks and rushing totals the Bears line visually and statistically isn't the worst.
I played OL for years. I understand we disagree, but I'm not crazy. Maybe in the horse blinded world of blaming the OL for every sack I'm some radical, but it's not all on the OL. Throw Martz in there. Throw Cutler in there. Throw the TE in there. And not to be a bastard, but Forts has been known to blow a block a time or two. It happens.
But, the line has improved big time since this time last season. Soon we'll have a young line, with players the can play in any position. I like the progress I've witnessed. I'm anxious to see a fully healthy Carimi return.
The Bears are a good team. If our receivers and o-line were as good as you claimed? We'd have won the Super Bowl last year. We'd probably be 2 wins better than we are right now. We had one of the worst offenses in the NFL last year. A lot of those people are still on this team. Usually when we face a good defense this offense falls apart.
This isn't last year. Players progress. I know it's seems like such a crazy notion to you. But, players improve. Young players get better. Last year the OL we terrible and the WRS looked lost.
I don't see how you can even try to argue that our OL and WRs are a lost and over matched as last year. They aren't. The 2010 Bears aren't the same team as the 2011 Bears.
The Chicago Bears are 4-3. We just finished the hardest part of our schedule. I'm thrilled wre over .500 at this point. We lost to the Saints, Packers, and Lions. Two of those games were away. In my opinion we're on course to have a great season. Minus and injuried this unit is poised to succeed this year.
Do you think this team would be better than 4-3 with Kretuz on ice skates and Sims-Walker on the bench? I just find it so strage that while be both seems to like the Bears you find reasons to complain constantly. You'll scold almost every move the team makes, yet you won't give credit when you're hypothetical moves prove to be wrong.

Forte keeps saying the Bears don't think he's elite. His price has only gone up. What makes you think JA is going to get a deal done?
and I concur Meriweather is just as brutal...just without all the lip service.
Not only is Meriweather awful. His head hunting might get him suspended. NFL has said they are worried about him. It really help out depth if he missed games from being a dumb ass.
I agree Forte is playing great. But, he hasn't always looked so great.
Ok :confused
Question: Do you know why Forte is better this year?
There is difference between being decent and being the worst. That is were we differ. I see a decent line that has made progess since Week 1. You seemingly see the same line that was playing against the Giants last year.
Progress since Week 1?
Week 1: Line did an ok job.
Week 2: 2010 bad
Week 3: Awful
Week 4: Great run blocking terrible pass protection
Week 5: 2010 bad
Week 6: Bad but changing of system allowed Cutler to escape pressure
Week 7: Line did decent.
I don't see this steady progress you're talking about. We've gotten worse since Week 1.
Maybe you aren't the one watching the game.
You must be the only one who gets the games. Every analyst who watches football isn't seeing what you are.
I played OL for years.
Why does this matter? If it did then me telling you a Hall of Fame player says the line and receivers suck should hold merit above you. Hell just about every former player analyst says our receivers and o-line are bad. Go listen to WBBM during the game. Tom Thayer is a former linemen and was good in his prime. He'll tell you when the Bears o-line is sucking.
I understand we disagree, but I'm not crazy. Maybe in the horse blinded world of blaming the OL for every sack I'm some radical, but it's not all on the OL.
No one blames EVERY sack on the o-line. A majority are clearly their fault. I wish Cutler could hold on to the ball long enough to be the problem. Most of the time he doesn't have that leisure.
Throw Martz in there. Throw Cutler in there. Throw the TE in there. And not to be a bastard, but Forts has been known to blow a block a time or two. It happens.
Ya it's everyone is to blame but the o-line :ugh
But, the line has improved big time since this time last season. Soon we'll have a young line, with players the can play in any position. I like the progress I've witnessed. I'm anxious to see a fully healthy Carimi return.
When is this soon? What does is say about our o-line when a rookie tackle is key? I love Carimi, but it speaks to our lack of depth when you miss a rookie tackle so much you have guards at right tackle.
This isn't last year. Players progress. I know it's seems like such a crazy notion to you. But, players improve. Young players get better. Last year the OL we terrible and the WRS looked lost.
That's why a couple weeks ago Tice said the linemen needed to start earning their paychecks because he thought they sucked. I guess it's a crazy notion to you that most o-lines perform better than ours.
I don't see how you can even try to argue that our OL and WRs are a lost and over matched as last year.
Johnny Knox was better last year. Bennett hasn't been here. Roy Williams has showed up for one game and has hurt us from being out there. Guess you see all these thing as positives though. It's very obvious how bad the receivers are. The line has a couple young athletic linemen we'd like to develop. Who knows if they will, but we have ZERO depth.
You can say what you want, but most of watch the Bears and see a flawed team. Why? Because we're realist. You on the other hand have not criticized a SINGLE Angelo move. If so which ones? He made a lot of moves. What were the bad ones? You defense his signings, his drafts, ect. It doesn't make any sense.
An average General Manager would know the two units that needed improvement were o-line and receiver. We drafted a tackle and just said "Well that's it." you can find quality linemen later in the draft. Roy Williams has had one decent game this year. It took him till Week 7 to get his first touchdown. He has 13 catches on the year. I hope he can keep up this great pace. Maybe he'll get to 30!
There's no denying the fact Angelo made moves to run this system and its all been an utter failure. We can't run the system. Our receivers don't get open when running the more complex routes, and our o-line can't block it. You have an offensive coordinator and a playbook who were brought here to do one thing. We can't let him execute his plan because Angelo hasn't fielding a team that can do it. That's TERRIBLE. How many teams can't run their systems because the GM won't get the personnel to run it.
Sims-Walker would have been a better fit in this system than St. Louis. You constantly act like Angelo mad better moves instead. A lot of us wanted Sims-Walker here. I'd still have taken him. If he's so awful why did the Jags snap him right back up when he got released? At least Sims-Walker was learning a new system with Josh McDaniels. Roy went to the Pro Bowl in this system. Why does he suck?
Sims-Walker (26)
12 catches - 150 yards
Williams (29)
13 catches - 190 yards
I think I'm going with the 26 year old who still might have some upside to him. Williams came in here, was handed a starting job, and has done nothing to earn it. He doesn't produce like a starter. As for Kreutz he'd probably have been benched here as well. That MCL is not holding up. That's why you signed Chris Spencer. The team would be better if Garza was at right guard. He doesn't make the transition to center. Then the guy Angelo signed to play center would be ready to go.
Overall Angelo misses on most of his draft picks. He's missed on a load of recent free agent signings. At least he gave Taylor $7 mil last year and would only offer Forte $6 mil per. Just a genius this Angelo.

It's not just SACKS. It's that even when Cutler wasn't getting sacked, he was getting hit and knocked down after 2 seconds on play after play after play. Which resulted in him looking scared and paranoid anytime he dropped back for a 7 step drop.

DAMN IT!!
I typed a whole post dedicated to responding to you ZEPP. But, ants gave me some sort of multiple log-in error and it's fucking gone. Wow, I wasted so much time...
I guess I'll paraphrase.
Basically, at times you act the same way I do. At times you act like a cynic. I can go back and find posts about how you loved our Pepper/Manu/Taylor free agency pull. But, now JA is stupid because of it. You didn't always loathe Martz. You didn't always mind the idea of trading Olsen.
You can go check my posts. I'm pretty fair. I feel like sometimes you just get on a kick where you spend more time bitching about the problems than complimenting the positives. It's not as if Chicago has been out of it. They were in the NFC Championship. They are 4-3. I'll bring up once again how you professed that you hoped we lose out so Lovie and JA get fired.
I understand it's a message board. But, that's why we debate. I'm sure in person we'd concede that it's not as bright as I paint it, but not as dark as you paint it.
I see the drafts. I see the moves JA makes. I don't want to imply he's perfect or amazing. But, he's far from the bottom of the league. He's has moderate success. You know you can think of teams off the top of your head that haven't even come close to Chicago. Bills/Rams/Lions/Redskins/Raiders/Dolphins/Broncos/Browns/Bengals/Jaguars.... should I go on? Panthers/Seahawks/Niners/Texans... These are teams have have been big losers. Since 2005 the Bears worst record was 7-9. Most of these teams would be viewed as improved if they made 7-9. Throw that on top of the fact they've all had great picks 1st round spots. Would the Lions be great without Stafford/Johnson/Suh? You gotta be bad to get so many college studs...
I look back on the Draft and post lockout FA and I don't find any glaring flaw in JAs approach. Colon stayed with the Steelers. I know you would like JA to overspend on somebody with name value like Waters, but I'm sure Tice is helping evaluate OL propects. I like Tice. You seem to like Tice. I don't understand how you have trouble connecting the dots. JA isn't soley acting upon his own will. He's consulting and working with the coaches during the offseason.
We disagree on Kretuz, Olsen, the value of our WRs, and the potential of our OL. Kreutz is a formality because you know he wasn't playing better than Garza is. Olsen you've changed your mind on a couple of times. I also know we're pretty close on our views of the WRs. I just tend to look at the upside. You tend to look for what's missing. We both agree we need a true #1. But, I didn't see one this offseason...you seemingly did.
You hate JA. I don't mind JA. You like the Bears. I like the Bears. We're more alike that it seems. I just get enough ragging on the Bears watching ESPN, NFL Network and listening to the radio... So when I come in here I get to take out my aggression of Trent Dilfer and other on you...

I loved the Peppers signing. I want never a big Manu fan. They got Taylor because they didn't think Forte fit the system. Kind of shows you they can't self evaluate. If we had just signed Manu and Taylor I wouldn't have even cared. Most of my excitement that offseason was over a future hall of famer.
You can go check my posts. I'm pretty fair. I feel like sometimes you just get on a kick where you spend more time bitching about the problems than complimenting the positives. Ok first off you only get upset with me about things EVERYONE in the NFL world post. Why that is I don't know. Though I'm one of the few people in this thread that will engage you. Mostly because I like watching Bears but you do realize a majority of the NFL world disagrees with your opinion? Even if you're right and you got the inside scoop on us. You act as if everything I say is just "Where is this coming from!?" it's a head scratcher.
I said that early last season when the team was completely mismanaged. I said that same day I was just over reacting in ONE post. Like most of us I couldn't believe what we were seeing. I wasn't the only one saying it, but you continue to bitch about what I said. You really need to re-read my post that day. Outside of that one post how often do I say we should keep Lovie? ALL THE TIME. I don't think Lovie is the problem. Angelo and Martz have held this team back.
If I'm not mistaken haven't you been very anti-Cutler and Forte in the past?
I see the drafts. I see the moves JA makes. I don't want to imply he's perfect or amazing. But, he's far from the bottom of the league. He's has moderate success. You know you can think of teams off the top of your head that haven't even come close to Chicago.
Moderate is a nice way of putting it. People never think "Oh look at the Bears roster. How great is that? If only Angelo was our GM." he's not a guy who's highly respected around the NFL. He hits on guys here and there. No one is saying he's ever had a decent draft pick. Guys with Jerry's track record don't last 10+ years like he has.
Would the Lions be great without Stafford/Johnson/Suh? You gotta be bad to get so many college studs...
:lol Would the Lions be great without the QB who has elite potential, the best defensive tackle, and best wide receiver in the NFL? Those are cornerstones of franchises. They have promising talent all over their roster. Sure the Lions were bad to get those picks, but they still have gotten it done.
You just have to look at the Packers to see what a good GM can do. They contended year after year while putting together the best roster in the NFL. All of their receivers would start on the Bears. They had o-line issues at one point, but they fixed it. They were able to give Rodgers the best chance to develop and succeed. What they've done via the draft and free agency the last few years makes the Bears look like a complete joke. In Chicago we should have a higher standard than below average.
You bitch at me about Kreutz every chance you get. Despite the fact Tice and Lovie wanted Kreutz back. Hell anytime I bring up Tice and Lovie disagreeing with Angelo you differ to Angelo and act like everyone is on board. Just weird.
Olsen you've changed your mind on a couple of times. I also know we're pretty close on our views of the WRs. I just tend to look at the upside. You tend to look for what's missing. We both agree we need a true #1. But, I didn't see one this offseason...you seemingly did.
I was fine with Olsen if it meant getting a real receiver. That we didn't do. Olsen didn't fit this system and had a terrible year with only 41 catches for 404 yards and 5 touchdowns. We'd be really lucky to get that out of Roy Williams at this point.
Our receivers are bad, but would be ok compliments to real recievers. You act like we shouldn't be upset at this situation. It's not as we lost some guys to free agency and there's only so much you can do in one off-season. Angelo hasn't built a good receiving core in 10+ years here. It's RIDICULOUS that our last 1,000 yard receiver was Booker back in 2002. Booker was here when Angelo got here.
This is a league that is BEGGING you to pass. All the rules are so you can pass. There's only so much a defense can do in this league. Instead of surrounding our offense with weapons we seem to draft undersized defensive players and safetys who will never see the field.
The highest receiver we've taken is probably Bennett in the 3rd round. Guess what? We red shirted him a year. Draft picks don't play in Chicago because we don't take impact players in the first three rounds. It's really really sad.
Does it ever occur to you that the reason everyone rags on the Bears is because they are what they are? A very flawed team that wins games because of a couple key players. Even if you don't mind JA. You need to raise your standards. This is a big market team with a ton of history and tradition. We deserve better than this.

We do have a very flawed team. I have to say that a new gm would be great at this point. Someone who wants to build a fucking powerhouse. Why not? We have the right franchise to do it... ton of $, great qb and rb. Solid d with peppers still in his prime. Get the shit done. There has been chances to get a wr and do everything else we want to do. I'm a season ticket holder and I pay a 100$ a game and that's a lot of cash every year to try and buy in that roy williams is gonna catch 100 ballls. Yeah honestly it's kind of pathetic. They are using and abusing him, will franchise him for a couple of years and when he's worn down, let him try to find a big contract somewhere else (nobody's giving him a big contract at the age of 30). They are still way under the cap anyway if I'm not mistaken. It's just a dick move by the organization.

It's a tough call.
It's smart businessw-wise. RBs aren't too hard to find in the draft. RBs usually have a big fall-off.
But, Forte isn't really your typical back. He's great at several aspects of the position. He's smart and has class, unlike the Chris Johnsons of the world. He works his ass off. He never makes excuses.
As a fan, I just don't understand why they don't pay him. They have so much extra cap room this year, I can't understand the reasoning against front loading a contract for him. He's not the typical bruiser RB. Barring injury a guy with his skill set will have a decent run ala Faulk.
But, we'll see. It's almost as if Chicago is counting on him getting hurt or regressing. Both of which are possible, but it's does seem counter productive. I guess that's just what Franchising is all about. I mean they just signed a new CBA, so no real reason to bitch business-wise. But, personally it a slap in Fortes face.

Copy and pasted the quotes from a longer article
http://www.suntimes.com/sports/8553081-606/matt-forte-feels-unappreciated-without-a-long-term-deal.html
‘‘The running back position is the most physically demanding on the field,’’ Forte said Tuesday. ‘‘Everyone acknowledges that. So to continue to give me the touches I’ve had since my rookie year but not award me a long-term contract sends the message that you’re OK grinding me into a pulp.’’
Asked if the lack of a contract extension affects his desire to stay with the franchise, Forte said: ‘‘It does a little bit. I love the team, I love my teammates, I love the coaches and I love Chicago. But when management messes with you like that, it puts you in the mind frame of wanting to go to a team that desires you. You’re not going to be happy, let’s say that.’’
Forte, though, acknowledged the Bears hold the leverage and said he’s growing weary of all the inquiries about his status.
‘‘There’s nothing I can do about it,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s up to them. They hold the contract extensions and the franchise tags in their hands.
‘‘It’s kind of getting old right now. Every time you talk to somebody, ‘How come they’re not paying you, man?’ I have no idea. I feel like if it was anybody else on any other team, I think they would have rewarded their player.’’
‘‘If they think by just slapping the franchise tag on me that’s going to silence anything, they’re sadly mistaken,’’ he said. ‘‘That’s not going to cure everything. It’s not a solution, I would say.’’
Teammates have lobbied on Forte’s behalf, and captain Brian Urlacher suggested after the victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in London that Forte was the most valuable player of the NFL. In addition, fans have taken to Twitter with a ‘‘Pay Forte’’ campaign. ‘‘I appreciate the support,’’ Forte said. ‘‘Obviously, I’m doing something right for everybody to support me that way. I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing, and hopefully I can get a contract extension instead of a franchise tag or whatever that is.’’
Adisa Bakari, Forte’s agent, said the key is fairness.
‘‘Matt has a desire to remain a Chicago Bear,’’ Bakari said. ‘‘He loves the community and loves playing for the organization, but he wants to be treated fairly . . . the way other teams have treated their top-performing players. Nothing more, nothing less.’’

If we win the next two games we can control the wild card. This game being the most important since we'd own a lot of tie breakers. Just need the Saints to win the south.
