A tool has *just* been released that makes the process of converting .shn files to a listenable format simple within Macintosh OS X. It would be great to add this to the titorial or FAQ section somewhere as this is the first time that OS X users have had a reliable and simple way of converting/listening.

Download a program called "SoundConverter" from this site:
http://www.dekorte.com/software/osx/SoundConverter/

You will want to pay the $10 registraton fee (without it you are limited to decoding .shn files that are under 500k). This program converts practically anything to anything - really incredible (kudos to the author).

Simply download your .shn files and once done, either drop them individually or batched on the SoundConverter app. You will want to choose "aiff" for the output format. Other options to select:

-Channels: Stereo
-Samples per Second: 48khz
-Volume: 100%
-Bits per Sample: not adjustable or relevant in this conversion so nothing here
-Encoding: u-law

BAM! You have .aiff files that can be imported to iTunes and burned to Audio CD's! What a godsend! Hope this was helpful. I am just pumped to be free from CLI tools. Works in 10.2 and 10.3.

Hey - just trying to be helpful. I searched the web like mad and never ran across "xact" in my searching for an OSX GUI. It should be listed at Versiontracker.com with it's capabilities described - that would make it a lot easier for people to find. Looks good. By the way - my post was not spam - don't be a prick.

nice :) Is it compatible with OS 9? I know that was an issue with you and flac files.

it uses the unix binaries, so nope. and i still do 16 bit in shn because of the flac incompatibility with os 9

yes matt, i've been coding. tired of doing dumb coding at work, so why not actually make something i'll use? :)

just another fyi, carbon shorten has been around since 10/9/01, and that's a GUI. macflac has been around a while now too, not to mention numerous conversion utilities

That's awesome, Scott! If you need any help or want to push off any features/coding to someone, let me know.

The only problem i came across with carbon shorten is it didnt seem to work under 10.3 for me, oh well. Scotts program is the shit, i had started to make a gui based on the same thing he did and got SHN encode and decode to work. THen the next day i was just checking to see if my binaries for shntool and shorten were up to date when i saw scott had already made and pretty much perfected what i was trying to do! So to you scott i say THANK YOU!!! You have saved me many hours of relearning programming basics, and learning AppleScript. You are the man!!!
