So I've been eyeing these things for a while and have expressed interest in learning it. Well my uncle by marriage apparantley has a sister who plays mandolin so for Chanukah he bought me a used one. I got it today i'm quite psyched about it and I've learned some chords and shit. I was wondering if anyone else here plays and also. What is the standard tuning on one of these.

I got mine about a year ago. They are tuned like a violin. just like if you took the four thickest strings of a guitar and flipped them over

Yep, its tuned in 5ths, just like a violin. You'll be able to recognize the tones if you have one string tuned correctly after awhile. I'm thinking about trying to pick up a mandolin at some point and trying to play around with it

Great instrument. I started putting a lot of time into mine the last few months.

I used to play the violin, so one of my first orders of business was to take all my old violin music and convert it to mandolin tab and learn it. On a DMB note, you could play Boyds parts on one and have it sound pretty good.
As for artists to listen to, I like the Jazz Mandolin Project and also anything Chris Thile plays on. Thile is the mandolin player from Nickel Creek and has a bunch of solo stuff as well. He's really impressive. I've got some real detailed Power Tab scores if you're interested, but I wouldn't expect to be able to play them full speed right away.
Do you play the guitar?
