View Full Version : Where to Gig?

My friend and I have been playing guitar together for almost 2 years now and in my humble opinion, i think we're getting pretty good. We can easily jam to any song with pretty good solos, but there's just one problem: neither of us can sing. He usually plays rythm and I play the notes of the words, and it doesn't sound too bad. But we both want to start playing a gig, but what kind of place should we try???

Thanks

-Jamie

Interesting, without singing you could probably fit in at places that are more jazzy. Kind of do lounge act stuff at restaurants maybe.

I wish I could help. I've had a difficult time breaking into the gigging phase of music myself.

The one rule of gigging that me and my band have learned is play everywhere and anywhere at anytime......go for some coffeeshops who might have open mikes....smaller bars that only have acoustic type music.....but one piece of advice.....get a singer :)

I play acoustic guitar and also the piano (I sing and write my own songs). I used to play at 2-3 open mics a week in my area, it's a lot of fun and I was becoming somewhat recognizable to a small group of people. Unfortunately all of the open mics shut down due to lack of interest in the bars in my area. So I now have no place to play.

<--Edit: Picture of me playing at an open mic, there's a bigger one in my public profile as well. :)

Thats the problem here is Upstate NY as well......lack of interest....lack of money...so all the good places to play original music have to shut down...it blows

Yeah I know the feeling, I live in north-central mass. I knew a lot of people who hosted open mics and they'd generally only be getting $100 a night, but the owners felt the low class patrons would rather listen to the jukebox.

Edit: I would have loved to host an open mic, bought a PA system so I could if I ever got the chance, but now it's pretty bleak. I need to drive to Boston or Worcester and then it's impossible to get on the list to even play.

You know, some Starbucks may even let you play, if that doesn't make you feel like a whore.

Unfortuately the only Starbucks in my area are all in Barnes & Nobles and the atmosphere is usually quite since there are people in there reading all the time.
