the verses go 7xx7 4xx3 5xx7 2xx2 4xx3 and so on....but between those do you add mutes, strum, or just plain hit then move on?

I *think* ideally you would just hit them and move on, but it is kind of hard to do that when you are in Dave "constant strumming" mode, so your best bet would be to mute. I am pretty sure that Dave doesn not strum them.

Yes, exactly... so I usually just mute when I play and it sounds pretty fine. Strumming is tooooo muuuch sound I think.

you gotta mute.. and your tab is kinda upside down, but regardless you have the chord 5xx7 that should be 6xx5 by your tabbing style... let the finger thats playing the E string do the muting by having it gently lay ontop the the A and D strings ... watching dave is good on the CP DVD or listen to a D+T Grey Street

i play the chords like this
e-
B-
G-7-462-462-47
D-0-000-000-00
A-5-240-240-25
E-7-352-352-37

I play extra strums on the 7057 and 2002 chords, and with the chords in that shape it allows you to mute easier naturally. Hope this helps.

Hey...

I just noticed your chords were wrong in the original post. Here's the right progression:

7xx7 3xx4 5xx6 2xx2 3xx4 5xx6 2xx2 3xx4 (Repeat)

(Number on left is the bass note)

You originally listed the third chord as 7xx5

I hope that helps!

I mute and almost "scratch" when I'm moving from one to the other (a muted upstroke while moving the fret hand). Keeps the rythm moving & eliminates dead space-when there's not supposed to be much. Sounds fine to me....

I find you get a great sound if you don't mute your D-string AT ALL. It's the note you can hear resounding during any performance of Grey Street and the overall sound becomes much fuller. As for Dave's way of playing I find using my 1st and 3rd fingers for all the chords during the verse riff gives a fuller sound as well. the sliding sounds better than the way Dave hits the first two chords between his 1st 2nd fingers to 3rd 4th on the 3xx4 to 5xx6 change. (or 3x04 to 5x06 as I play it)
the open d gives you the D Boyd seems to play - listen to the way he uses his bow in the song and incorporate that into your strumming rythym

just play it the way dmbtabs.com says to play it for the solo version rather than the one that immediately comes up for grey street, and the muting will come naturally.
