We all love Carter, he's amazing. But i'v always wondered who would go good with DMB if Carter wasn't there. It definitely wouldn't be the same. Carter plays such a huge part in the band. Dennis Chambers probly....
I don't know to much about drummers yet. I have been playing for a month now and starting to learn about different drummers. I was watching a video of a drummer named John Blackwell, I think thats his name. He was freaking good, I believe he played with Prince.

i am confident that dave weckl could do the job of taking over for carter...but i am not so sure that he would have come up with all the little nuances that carter has put into the music. it doesnt take much to learn how to replicate it, inventing it is the tough part. no matter what...the music as we know it would never have sounded the same if someone else was there from the start. but then we would never have known how it would have sounded with carter.
this is just a thread about stating the obvious!

Stewart Copeland? Dynamics are similar in many ways.

Dave Weckl is superior to Beauford...but everyone has a different style...Carter's just fits...and plus, Weckl would "over-play" too much...That is why he is considered mostly a "soloist"

Im a much bigger fan of Beauford than Weckl. Their styles are too different to say if one is better than the other. I have seen DMB quite a few times and i have also seen Dave Weckl with the Dave Weckl band. If Weckl ws with DMB, he definitely wouldn't "overplay". I met him and that guy can lay down a beat if he wants to. Plus, who can fill it up more than carter??? No one could fit with DMB better than Beauford.

Check out Dennis Chambers, you'd like him.

I agree...I admit I am not a big weckl fan, I am more into Steve Smith and Clyde Stubblefield...but I pretty much mean the same as you...

The fact is is that Carter Beauford is so many great drummers rolled up into one that it would be almost impossible to replace him with someone of the same style. That is what drumming is about, style.....and time-keeping. His style is so complex that I have yet to find a drummer that covers as many techniques as he has mastered. DMB would really not be DMB without Carter. That is probably why I'm such a big fan because in no other band is the drummer as important as in DMB.
Check out Dennis Chambers, you'd like him.
I will, does he play in a band?

He has played with many bands to list the larger ones...Santana and Paliament Funkadelic A.K.A P-Funk. Dennis is the fucking man and is partially the reason why Carter plays the way he does. I have a buddy who also plays who went to see Dennis do a clinic and said it was mind blowing. I have seen a Buddy Rich tribute video where it is Louis Bellson Dennis Chambers and I can't remember the other guys name at the moment... I will post it as soon as I remember. But anyways that "other guy" did this huge fill that was SICK!!!!!!!! But Dennis took the fill and made it even sicker....ONE HANDED! Dennis=Domination! I own the Pearl Dennis Chambers signature series Snare Drum and all I have to say is amazing its a great drum, I highly reccomend it. Well Peace -Wes-

no one.
and this is gonna be a list of everyone's favorite drummers...
with that said... i'd like to hear danny carrey and jimmy chamberlin play with dmb, but it wouldn't be dmb... they both are/were in rock bands and originated in jazz... if you look around you can find jazz band recordings of both carrey and chamberlin, some of carrey's shit is wierd, electronic drums...
perhaps more interstingly i'd like to hear beauford play with a straight rock band, a band such as coldplay or maybe some of corgan's stuff. i'd LOVE to see how he would adapt some of his style, i think he'd have to change a good deal and it would be interesting.

Any number of the greats, Just imagine what kind of off beat stuff Gadd would come up with. If you want some harder stuff, Vinnie or Terry could handle it. Any of the more jazzy songs could be handled by weckl, steve smith, or Garibaldi. Yeah, everyone says dennis is his twin, but Dennis doesn't do much rock cause the musicians he choses to play with are mostly jazz. I'm not saying he can't or hasn't done rock at all. DMB could get any number of players to fill in and fill in well. It would still lack Carter's uniqueness, but it would also still rock.

the only person that could deliver close to the same feel as carter is dennis chambers. All these other guys like weckl and carrey are great but their styles are totally different than carter. Im sure other drummers would sound cool with DMB but nowhere near the vibe they have with carter.

yea i met Chambers at a clinic in Jersey. When i walked up to him i didnt know what to say, i was like " yea i listen to a lot of carter beauford's stuff" he laughed and said he liked carter in the fusion band called secrets. He also enjoys seeing carter play with DMB. he signed some shit for me, it was cool. Ive never been more blown away by someone playing drums ever. Hes top 3 ever to play the instrument. people watching in the audience were in shock.

yeah.... but would you all really want someone who could "duplicate" or be similar to carter's sound?? i'd want someone who was different, completly different even and still great. thats why i said carey it'd be a completly different sound which to me would be great. i don't see why you'd want somone who's sorta like carter but obviously not the same.

bottom line is, "if DMB didnt have Beauford", obviously it would not sound the same. it would have a different vibe. im not saying thats a bad thing. It would be interesting to see what other drummers would come up with for drum parts to all the songs without hearing carter's parts first.

i would say that if anything, Dave W. could do it, and maybe even the drummer for Tantric. his style might be influenced by carter too. same drum setup. i saw them open for three doors down, and he was really good. he fills in some good stuff like carter, and spices up the music, but Carter i would have to say does the best job of them all

i think deff chambers, carter even said in a magazine i once read that he has "stolen some moves" from him with a laugh. the guy is amazing, they play very similar.

If Carter quit today, I dont think DMB would ever be the same! Im not saying they would suck, but they have been together for way to long..it would be strange! He is an amazing talented person and brings a lot of flavor to the group. They have to much history with Carter!

DMB without Carter would not be DMB. Simple as that.
I wonder however, what DMB would sound like with Buddy Rich, or John Bonham at the set. Well, unless someone knows how to bring someone back to life, I guess we'll never know. :angel

thats a dumb question, cause carter definitely came first otherwise he couldnt have been in the band and the band would not have existed
without carter there is no band, without the band there is still carter

fucking parodoxs!i beg to differ. maybe not quite as famous as now, but his name would have gotten out there and he would have been picked up.

Perhaps. But there are soooooooooo many great musicians that remain hidden in the dark. What those musicians don't realize is that they can become part of the mainstream if they really tried. If Carter had a desire to be in the mainstream, and kept going from band to band until he did, then he would have eventually made it in the mainstream. If he had no desire to go into the mainstream (meaning that he was content with his local jazz gigs), then he would only be known to the Virginian Jazz diehards.

I agree. He was already playin with some pretty damn good bands before he was with DMB. He was mainly a jazz/fusion drummer, if anyone has recording of when he played with "Secrets", put them on here, its kick ass.

i dont think carter's aim was to get into the mainstream. he would be playing in fusion/jazz bands just like dennis chambers (besides the santana) and all those cats.

I have a couple of picks: Vinnie Collaiuta. He's got the odd-time signature down and uses splashes is a similar way to Carter. His style is not as funky but he'd great in this band. See the work he does with Sting.
My other pick would be the drummer from the old Arsenio Hall show. I think his name was Chuck Morris. Incidently, Carter auditioned for that gig and didn't get it. I remember Chuck being at least as funky as Carter and great use of cymbals too.
