if you are looking to buy Dave Matthews tab/chord books, save your pennies.
In my experience, they are very difficult to navigate through.
Stick with dmbtabs.com or something equivalent (not sure there is an equivalent)
jkanter does an amazing job with that website, and he takes many of the tabs from actually videos
I would just warn against them.
I just have better luck with internet tabs.......Heck, sometimes tabs from the net will even give you the strumming patterns. You will NOT find that in any book on tabs from a musician's CD. (at least not that I know of)

This is only half true.
The books are very useful if you are interested in learning the guitar parts that are on the corresponding cd. In other words, the books are (for the most part) note-for-note accurate to what is being played on the cd. Most people are disappointed with what they see in these books because they are expecting to learn what Dave plays live. What you have to understand is that the guitar parts you are hearing on DMB's live studio albums are being played 75% of the time by Tim Reynolds and 25% of the time by Dave Matthews.
Advantages of tab sites:
accurate transcription of what Dave plays live, some strumming patterns
Advantages of tab books:
lyrics, musical notation of vocal and guitar parts, alternate guitar lines that are played on the studio albums, some of Tim's fills, occasionally Leroi, Stefan, and Boyd's parts transcribed for guitar.
Hope that helps.

That is EXACTLY right. If you can read sheet music.....chances are you will be able to play a DMB song sounds near perfectly w/ the tab books(with practice of course). There are also usually 2 guitar parts tabbed in the books also(sheet music too).
AND, the Tab books do often times have songs being played correctly. Not everything is wrong...in fact, a lot are very close. Like Nancies is exactly as is on dmbtabs.com(I believe).
Basically, you know the tabs from dmtbabs.com are what Dave plays...but that's not always necessary to follow in order to play songs correctly(although in my opinion it does help w/ the right rhythm).
Anyway, go to the music store and check them out....read them there for a bit and decide. But I would have to say go w/ DMBTabs.com.....and the biggest reason of that is becuase I don't want to support and tabs that DMB puts out officially becuase they are assholes and don't want to help the community AND make money by allowing a very informative instructional DVD come out.
Also on that note...filming for said DVD starts next week :evil

Curious are you saying DMB are assholes or the people that make the tab books, who exactly are the assholes.

I'm guessing he means the people representing DMB, not the actual band (legal team, management, etc.). They seem to be the people that give everyone the biggest hassles when it comes to this sort of thing.

Yeah I figured and hoped he ment the representation, to think of dave and band as assholes is a terrible thing, they to me seem like very nice down to earth people who love their fans and cherish their accomplishments, unlike many other artists who easily take success and fame for granted.

my friend just got 5 tab books for guitar and i was looking through them last night, and they were really awful. in some of the songs they even gave the wrong notes. what i suggest is watching dave play and just doing what he does, of listening to a song and just playing it whatever you feel comfortable with. Dave tab sites are amazing too though

thanks everybody, ill stick to the tab sites but i can never get the strumming down right unless it is all marked but its usually wrong anyways. i guess daves struming patterns always change so it is kind of pointless to put it. maybe itll just take some more practice. i can already play some of the easier tunes like 40, typical, and obviously proudest monkey and crash but i havent gotten much further yet. anyways, thanks for all the suggestions.

Hey, a little off the topic, but in the official tab books, only the Piano/Vocal ones, how complicated are the piano parts? Are they just the basic melody/harmony notes, or are they more intricate, for example, like Jay Wood's rendition of #41.
I want something that is hard to play but sounds really good once you learn it, not something basic, so I am just making sure I'm not wasting my money.
Thanks,

I agree. Unless you want, say, the whole tim solos from L@LC, its not worth it.
