Started out another magical night. The band had Taco Bell before the show, and well, needless to say, they were shitting rockets after Two Step. Sorry about that, they just needed to relax their asses and simply could not play an encore. Well, it's been a good stand at the Gorge as usual, catch y'all in Utah in a couple days!

How is that "different"? They've played at The Gorge 19 times (including times they've opened for people and parts of festivals) and they've only played Halloween twice. I think if they do play halloween it's "different."

TWO STEP!!!!
*Ahem* Now that I have that out of the way, time for my report.
Saturday morning, I checked the song stats for Two Step on the site, and sure enough, found out it wasn't played! So, for the whole weekend, I was waiting for it...
9/4/04
We got a pretty decent spot on the lawn. A few "rows" behind the sidewalk near the bottom. Perfect view.
Openers were good. Jem played a short set, and Mraz was awesome. During Mraz's set, a big-ass plane flew right over the crowd. It was awesome. Now, on to the show!
The Stone: Great opener
Best Of What's Around: Debut for me (got lots of debuts for me, these being my 3rd and 4th shows after all). Was surprised to get this in the 2 spot. Band sounded really tight.
So Much To Say: Great to finally hear this too. I was worried about Dave's voice, but it sounded great. Was disappointed with no Bridge, but they made up for it with...
Seek Up: Oh holy shit, my favorite song, and so far I've got it at 50% of my shows. Just incredible.
Joy Ride: Yep, I did the woos, and I loved them. I was surprised at how much of the crowd started the woos as soon as the song started.
I Did It: At least it didn't open :lol seriously though, it's an ok, fun song live
Help Myself: Someone next to me asked if this was one of the new songs. Great to finally see it though.
Song That Jane Likes: Very nice
Sugar Will: Right before he started playing it, I looked up and noticed you could see the stars clearly. So, for about a minute during Dave's intro, I just laid on my back and looked up at the stars. The song itself was great, seeing it live was so different than listening to a recording.
Stay: Surprised it was mid-set. Butch singing still cracks me up, and it was great to finally see this one too (Next year I'm gonna miss hearing a bunch of songs I haven't seen before, but I'll have new songs for that).
Crash: Standard, Dixie Chicken outro
Lie In Our Graves: Great Butch & Boyd jam
Fool To Think: Better live than I expected it to be. Was surprised that there were only two new songs at this point. Also, it was about 10:20 now, so I figured we wouldn't get another long jam...
Typical Situation: Boy, was I wrong. Great to see this again.
Too Much: LeRoi's little jam and the new outro just make this song so much better. Great set closer.
DDTW Intro: This was VERY different than intros in the past. I'd say it was about 5 minutes long, Stefan did lots of ambient effects, Dave did some Butterfly teases, I was doubting whether it actually was a DDTW Intro.
Don't Drink The Water: Almost 11:00 now, so I figured this would be it. Great version, no wailing outro though.
DDTW Outro: They were having fun with this encore. This sounded, at least I thought so, similar to some of the WYA intros from last year. Just a couple of minutes long, Dave singing one line over and over (can't remember what it was), segued right into...
Everyday: I've said before that crowd participation is the key to this song's success as a closer, and there was lots of it. Everyone around me was doing the Hani Hanis, and it sounded like almost the entire place was doing it at some points. Great Boyd solo. I though the entire encore was incredible, it looks weak on paper but the way they did was just... wow.
When ED finished, the time was 11:17. 17 minutes past curfew. They must really love playing here.
9/5/04
This time, we got a great spot on the terrace part of the lawn, right in front of the fence that seperates it from the reserved seats. Excellent view.
PNP -> Rapunzel: They opened with this at my first show, so it was only fitting that they open with it at my last Gorge show before I move on to see them at other venues. Roi tore it up.
Recently: Very surprised to get this here. Basically the same as all other Recentlys from this year, Pretty Girl outro.
Grace Is Gone: Hoedown jam kicks ass.
Joy Ride: See above.
If I Had It All: 3rd time getting this, starting to get old. Still enjoyed it though.
Crush: Great to finally get this too. Everyone was just on fire tonight.
Side note: The 3 songs I most wanted to hear this weekend were Two Step, Ants, and Hello Again, so at this point I was getting worried...
Hello Again: Fucking incredible. Lots of Dave wailing, Carter solo was short but very sweet.
Lover Lay Down: Very nice
Sugar Will: Felt much tighter this night than it did on Saturday. I love how this song just fades out at the end.
Ants Marching: Wow. This song is just incredible live. Full snare intro, great way to pick the crowd up after Sugar.
Crazy Easy: I can't wait for this song to get some set lyrics, I just love it musically.
Dancing Nancies: Great to get this one as well. Was hoping for Warehouse afterwards, but oh well (didn't know it was played Night 1)
Cry Freedom: Dave's voice kind of gave out during this one, couldn't hit any of the high notes. However, I thought the way he sang it made it very emotional.
Side note: Crowd starts chanting for Two Step. This is the song I've been most wanting to see live for the past two years, Two Step from LS is the song that got me into this band. Unfortunately, I've been plagued by the Two Step curse. Past two years, it's been played the night before my show...
Two Step: And the curse is broken! Just... wow. Was worried that it might be a short version like a week ago, but they jammed it out. Butch & Carter just tore it up. At last, I can die happy.
(Butterfly): Nothing major, just Dave playing the main guitar part for about half a minute.
Rhyme & Reason: Very surprised to see this first encore. Whatever happened to Dave's voice duing Cry was gone, he was very intense during this one.
Watchtower: Great Stefan intro, one of the best I've heard. Standard version, great way to close the show.
Overall, incredible shows. I'm having a hard time deciding which is better, I'll have to listen to the recordings. However, as to how they rank overall, both are better than 8/8/03 but not as good as 9/8/02.
It's 4:18 in the morning, and I'm still feeling energized, not tired one bit. Now, it's time to read through the entire thread! Should keep me busy for a few hours :D

Well, here's what was posted on the Road Page after night 3:
We just finished our third show at The Gorge and we're sad to be leaving. This place feels like home. The venue's management presented DMB with a plaque commemorating the band's record of having sold a total of 360,000 tickets over 18 shows throughout the years. The most for any band at The Gorge. We're gearing up for another long drive tonight. Hope to you in Salt Lake on Wednesday.

Amen brother. I am pretty sick of ppl here only being impressed with something rare. Some songs are rare for a reason. Sure I would like to see some songs busted out butI can still say a show is good when no rare songs are played. This attitude here is tiresome.

13 Hour drive back from the Gorge to Sacramento. We left immediately following the show. I drove till 5am... made it to Eugene... where my brother took over. I got pulled over in Yakima for doing 68 in a 55. The cop was cool and let me go with a warning. I don't remember Eugene to Sacramento because I was sleeping... which is a GREAT way to end a 13 hour road trip... y'know... missing the last 5.5 hours.
Last nights setlist was AWESOME. However, Saturday's show had WAY more energy... well... at least as far as I could tell...
If Sunday's setlist was played with Saturday's crowd and events, I think it would be the BEST show ever. I mean EVER. The Airforce Jet flying over during Mraz plus the encore Patriotism... Just AWESOME.
The Gorge campground sucks. It's cool that it's RIGHT there, and it's cool that all the people there are cool, but the security staff are a bunch of Nazi's. Saturday, we were asked to show our tickets 4 times within the first 3 songs. twice by the same guy. After my brother yelled at him... pulling a BRILLIANT line from 'Swingers'... "See this face?? This is the guy behind the guy behind the guy... REMEMBER THIS FACE AND STOP ASKING FOR MY FUCKING TICKET!!" They never asked again. Then afterwards, in the campground, the security was super anal retentive. They had a the token "big black guy" (6'5" 225 bald) trying to intimidate everyone... And some woman was being a fucking cunt... "This is quiet time. GO TO YOUR TENTS." Look, bitch... If I wanted to put up with my parents, I would have gone to see THEM on Labor Day weekend.
Slut.
The No in and out priveleges sucks. I wanted to go to the river, but I was stuck there... I really brought the enjoyment level down a bit.
All in all, a good weekend. Great seats on Saturday, Great setlist on Sunday, Super nice fans.
I can now say I've visited Mecca. I have made my pilgrimage to The Gorge. I don't know when I'll be back. It was quite a LONG drive... Maybe next time I'll fly. Actually... yeah... That's the only way I'll be back. Save 1800 miles on my truck.

CAPSULIZED GORGE REVIEW!!!
9/3 Sec A Row 35:
Personal notes: Weekend started off with a bang... literally. After the show a girl backed into my 350Z :BANG . She was polite enough to leave a note and it is just a car... *sigh* I set up a table with over 30 free shows to give away. I was cleaned out in less than 10 minutes. I earned 3 beers and 6 DMB magnets for my time, it was very cool and fun. My first experience with Mraz, and I must say that I was impressed. My area was merely OK, but the Gorge kickoff made up for my fellow fans' shortcomings.
Concert notes: This was my first time to hear the new songs live. I understand some of the displeasure people have towards Sugar Will, it justs doesn't work well live. Joy Ride, on the other hand, worked very well and yes, I wooed:o . Hello Again absolutely rocked as I expected. Pig opener, Everyday outro for #41, a sexy sultry womanish voice from Dave on the Jimi scat and the Billies Granny Warehouse close highlighted the night. All in all this was my favorite of the 3 shows.
9/4 Sec C Row 26:
Personal notes: Great night! The Air Force C130 that buzzed the crowd during Mraz scared the poop outta me. There was a moment that I was certain terrorists were bringing in another jet. My area was excellent tonight. We folded our chairs up 15 minutes before DMB came out and partied all night.
Concert notes: This set was a bit too radio friendly, but was still very fun. I was really expecting an ASTB after So Much To Say, but it was cool to be surprised with a “Baby!” ending. Graves was excellent, really jammed out, a song I’ve always wanted to hear live. Too Much had a nice break down in the middle and a cool (Little John?) jammy outro. DDTW had a long instrumental leading in and out, I thought it was a tease at first. And I actually like Everyday as a set closer. Very surprised that Hello Again and Crazy Easy were not played, I would have been sad had this been my only show of the year.
9/5 Sec B Row 23:
Personal notes: Best seats I’ve ever had, dead center! Worst crowd I’ve ever had, dead weights! To my right was heroin guy, shooting up 18 inches from me and standing like a statue. Beyond him was a group of Hells Angels who must have thought they were going to a Skynard concert, they sat for 75% of the show. The rest of my surroundings looked like DMB fans suffering from a long weekend hangover, they sat for half the show. Two people came and joined the folks in front of us to share their pipe, but there wasn’t room for two more guys in an already crowded area (this night the chairs were zip tied together so there was no folding). Needless to say tempers were flaring. During Crush a chick in the 5th row took off her top, but security nabbed her after about 10 seconds:( .
Concert notes: Pretty Pretty Girl outro on Recently was very nice. This was really Stefan’s show. He did nice long solos on GIG, Crush and Watchtower. He must have had the stage alone for a total of 15 minutes. Fairly predictable set though, but not too bad. I wish we could have had an IBYU or Captain, but oh well. Two Step’s intro was a throw back to a DaveSpeak from the 3-13-99 show. Let me paraphrase: “Lately I’ve been wondering… Why so many cowboys… When they come in from the desert…. They ask for whiskey… Man that is the last thing in the world I would want..”
“I’ve got a thing. Some of you may have things too. But I like my thing better because it is mine.” DJM 9/5/04

Alright, I'm back. Good weekend. I won't do a song for song breakdown, but I do have a few things.
Night one was the best in my opinion. Great crowd, excellently made setlist. Jimi Thing was the highlight. Dave sounded like a female jazz singer from the 40's.
I don't know what all the complaining is about. Sugar Will may be my favorite new song, especially after seeing it live. I didn't mind getting it all three nights at all. I love this song and it sounded much better this weekend then the early tour recordings.
I have pictures for anyone who would like to check them out:
http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/sttimmerman2003/my_photos
I also have some AVI's that I took with my digital camera and if anyone could help me figure out how to post them on this site that would be awesome.

Great weekend all around...my capsulated review:
Night 1: Solid show, great way to get things started. Highlights were obviously Pig, #41, Hello Again, Bartender, and Loving Wings. Loving Wings was unreal and everyone in A-31 was loving it. I haven't read this longass thread yet, but did anyone else hear a Some Devil tease to start off the show?
Night 2: My favorite night by far...nice to see some old school songs played: Seek Up, Jane, and BOWA were great. Sugar Will destroyed the show's momentum as it did all 3 nights. I like the song but it was easily the weakest song played every night. Tons of people in the pavilion sit down during it and become bored as hell. Highlights tonight were definitely Seek Up, Typical, Stay, LIOG, and TM. Tons of Butterfly teases throughout the night, especially during the intro and outro to DDTW.
Night 3: Setlist says it all...Rapunzel, Crush, Recently, Hello Again, Two Step, and Nancies were very solid. But the night belonged to Ants and Watchtower. Both of those songs had an insane amount of energy. From my seats, I could see Ashley and the twins dancing sidestage during Two Step...it was really cute, both Stella and Grace had these yellow ear muffs on and Dave motioned over to them a couple times during the song. He also looked over at them during Cry Freedom during the "little child" parts. Great weekend.

I agree. My section was going nuts during Ants Marching. One of the best versions I have heard.

I saw them night 2 and 3 because I was up front in section A. It was really cool to see them waving their hands while Ashley danced with them.

Obviously you've never been there.
Obviously they didn't get Halloween, The Last Stop, YNK, #36, #34, #40, and whatever else people said they were going to get simply because it's the Gorge, that's what I meant by it being an overhyped venue.

home:)
the venue and the bands energy lived up to the hype for me...walking in on Friday night and looking at the view from the top of the lawn was amazing to say the least
Night 2 was my favorite and the best show that I have seen out of the 10 I saw this summer....Seek Up was a fucking masterpiece
The night 3 setlist was tight even though Dave's voice was done
I've never seen so many mic stands.....counted at least 15 for each night...I'm sure there were more
Overall it was an amazing weekend :D
very tired...need to shower and eat.....more details later

Is that what he said?? All I heard was people screaming in my ear the very millisecond he opened his mouth, and then I heard, "......better because it's mine"
Funny. Thanks.
Yeah!! I heard that before Mraz, right? That was great! Did anyone happen to catch what he said before Jem Sunday night? I can paraphrase, but it could never be as funny as what he actually said...he started off with "happy birthday!!" then started talking about jelly beans...then how he hopes he doesn't get jelly bean sweats and then talked about jelly bean guts. Then he said he likes cheap jelly beans...like red flavor and yellow flavor (soooo funny) and that he didn't like popcorn or cinnamon flaovrs...because "that's just weird." Then he went on about talking about God over cigarettes and tea and explained the reason Sunday was named...but it was funny cause God didn't have jelly beans. Eh, I know that doesn't make much sense lol!! But it was really funny.
And oh yeah! I was there all three nights...had tons of fun! Had row 22 on Friday...sec. A off to the side. Not the greatest but I was so excited it didn't matter. On Sat. I had row 18 sec. B which were dead center and just amazing!! Saw his girls on the side dancing off and on during both shows. Really cute! Then on Sun. I was on the lawn which was still very chill. I don't have much to add to the reviews already posted until I have some time to relive it again, cause right now I just need sleep!!! Met tons of cool people at Getty's Cove...stupid wind blew away our tent on Sat. so we had to sleep all cramped up in our car. Ugh!! But it was sooooo worth it!!!

CAPSULIZED GORGE REVIEW!!!
Weekend started off with a bang... literally. After the show a girl backed into my 350Z :BANG . She was polite enough to leave a note and it is just a car... *sigh* ask for whiskey… Man that is the last thing in the world I would want..”

Thanks so much for sharing your experience and taking the time to write it up. :) I am really sorry to hear about what happened to your truck and am glad that 1) the driver left a note and didn't do a hit skip and 2) that you and your wife were not hurt.
And I love the Dave quote. Out of curiousity, when did he say it?

yeah, some people picked like JTR for the Gorge according to dmbgame.com...and more than 1 person. some picked Stay or Leave, #36 to be un-defuncted i guess.

Thanks for the concern. I've had so many unfortunate automobile incidents that this really didn't bother me too bad. And who could be depressed at the Gorge..
Dave said this quote while introducing Jem. Someone threw a folded up sign (??) on the stage. I don't think Dave knew what it was so he went and picked it up and said "I've got a thing...." It was very funny.

Back - not gonna do a night by night review but all I can is they absolutely tore that place up - best DMB shows I've seen since 2000. They just sounded so on and were all having a GREAT time on stage. Sunday was my favorite show with Friday taking a close second. I had row 10, section B on Friday so hard to compare to those seats. Saturday was packed and the energy was great but Sunday just had it all - how can you go wrong with Two Step?
Had fun at the Wildhorse - met Dan Wolf (aka Rastawolf) and a few other way cool people. A very mellow but perfect camping area for DMB fans. Just got up from a 4 hour nap and am gonna go back to bed soon - I'm almost too old for this shit. But - I will be back again.

Just wanted to say...
Saturday night was my first DMB concert ever as well as my first time at the Gorge. I couldn't have imagined a better place to see them first. Walking over that hill and seeing that view was the greatest feeling in the world. My tickets were just for the lawn, but I still enjoyed the show so much.
'Seek Up' was awesome and I loved 'Everyday' with '36' thrown in there. Next year, I'm definitely doing the 3 shows and the camping!
Just wanted to say!

He actually did the Pretty Pretty Girl outro from Recently? I have some recordings of him doing that during the '94/95 time period but didn't realize they still did it.
Did he throw the "Norwegian Wood / Take Me To the River" riff in there as well?
Crap, I only had tickets for Friday and Saturday nights, kills me I wasn't there to hear it. BTW, Friday night's "Broken String Jimmy Jam" scat was something else. The best Jimmy Thing I've ever heard.

Nope, he just did Pretty Pretty Girl, although Take Me to the River would have been appropriate. ;)

Nah, it was two different stories. (Or maybe that's what you're getting at- I'm tired.) He first told the jelly bean one. Then he said that he had a conversation with God, while drinking tea and smoking cigarettes. He said that God told him that He (God) had the foresight to name Sunday, Sun-day, after the sunny weather we had.
Or at least that's what I got from my seats in B-7. :D
I wish someone would record those things... that was the most talkative I've ever heard him be while introducing an opener. Jem's musicians were like "Hmm." :lol
There was a sign at the back of the reserved seats, in front of the lawn, that Dave read when he introduced Jason Mraz: "Yes to Gorge, no to George." Of course Dave liked it. ;) (That was Sunday also.)

Oh and if anyone is curious, Crazy-Easy's lyrics from what I could tell were depressing, about saying goodbye to someone.
And it was cool that they did GIG on Sunday, because one of my friends could only come to the Sunday show, and it was her first DMB show, and GIG is her favorite song. :) It was my 20th time hearing it- it's the song I've heard the most. But it's so beautiful.

It was the song my mother most wanted to see, so I'm glad she got it.
Plus, it was the first time I'd seen the hoedown outro so I enjoyed it too

LoL!! Yah, I was trying to get at that...two seperate stories, told all at the same time. But it was funny how he connected them together in the end. Yeah I didn't really make much sense trying to explain it. LoL...I'm super tired too. Though I hope someone out there taped it or something...we were dying at the randomness of it...great Davespeak! And yeah, he was super chatty for that introduction!!! And I forgot about that sign! He said something like "that's a handsome sign" lol. Good times!!!

Should keep me busy for a few hours :Dumm how do you remember all that? I was at all three shows and stoned so far out of my head i cannot remember all that was played unless refered back to a list and get it confirmed by others who were present. But awesome weekend! Best ever...little sunburned..well ok a lotta sunburned Gorge campsite was a good good time!!! Okay so the only blemish to this weekend for me was the fact that nobody from the Gorge campground was stopping to help a hitcher with a ride. Where's the love folks? Thankfully some guys helped me out and I got home, but whoever the bastard was that yelled "coordinate next time", lets just say karma can be a real bitch. Great weekend and next time I'll have my own ride so none of that hitchiking crap.

What a great weekend!! I was kind of pissed heading to the Gorge I was one of the unlucky few that got stuck on I-90 because some fuckhead thought it would be a great idea to do some construction. Once I got there, it was all better.
Could not have asked for much more, except maybe some more Jager :) If anyone was near sanitation station 11, we were the motorhome with the big ass Jager banner on the front. It was great. Quite a few people stopped by and asked about it. If I remember correctly, we went through about almost 4 litres of Jager in 2 days. :freak We almost stopped by and picked up another fifth after going to Vantage, but figured we still had about a fifth of Jack yet to drink.
The concerts were amazing. I almost feel spoiled living near one of the best venues in the world and getting able to see the best band in the world play there. Cannot wait for these shows to start circulating. Thanks to those that hooked me up with tickets. Great seats all 3 nights.
All in all, no complaints about the weekend. Looking forward to San Fransisco!
EDIT: Woohoo!!! Post 4000 for this thread!!!
