The seats are arranged in a similar arc to the gray(box seats) portion of the seating chart. I was in Sec C, Row 28, about the middle of the row for one show last year & it was a pretty good seat. I believe Butch was partially hidden from view though. I've also sat in rows 39-41 towards the inside of the section & I think they're fairly good seats as well. I just wouldn't want to be on the far outside of any of the rows.
Here's a crappy photoshop pic to show how the rows are arranged.

Airlines usually work the opposite, prices increase as the date of when you want to travel grows near, for the best possible price its usually best to book early.

Especially for a holiday weekend. The prices actually did not go up, but the cheaper fare class has likely sold out.

The very back rows in reserved seating are the best. Im a long time Gorgr vet and nothing beats the last ten rows of sec A, B or C for the best band viewing and dancing

Im telling u guys...next to the soundboard is best...for seeing, hearing and dancing....
jenniferlee
04-21-2004, 04:36 PM
For any section row 11 is gonna be good...seat 29 puts u right about the middle which isn;t bad if you can convince everyone in your row to fold their chair up to create more space....

yeah I'm not so much looking forward to this folding the chairs up crap
jenniferlee

Not much of a dancer?? you'll get a better picture once your there...:)
dmbpromoguy
04-21-2004, 06:47 PM
its not so much being a dancer vs not a dancer its more of the, if I'm in row 11 and people from rows 10-16 decide to fold up chairs around me, I've now got to deal with row 16ers pushing their way forward to stand next to me. Not lookin forward to it if it happens. This is exacly why the front floor sections at the arena where I live uses benches for the first swack of rows.

I think the point of a show is to have a good time and it's silly that row 11 cant intermingle w/ row 16 or whatever...sounds kinda snobby to me..I come fron seeing a lot of Dead shows where most of the time its general admission...everybody mingles and nobody is pushy ...If someone wants to get in front of me to see better its ok by me. I've had plenty of front row nights where fans have allowed me to get a better peek at my favorite band. Row 55 people pay just as much as row 11 people....:p

A) It's not general admission.
B) It's not silly to me that row 16 can't intermingle with row 11...that's the point of rows and reserved seating.
C) If you had tickets in the front row would you want your row to be folded up so that someone 55 rows back can push his way up to your spot? If you want to experience the concert in a general admission fashion, move to the lawn.
D) Often people in row 11 pay more than people in row 55 because they've purchased their seats from brokers, have paid more money to the WH (i.e. membership fees) to get that seat, etc.
dmbpromoguy
04-21-2004, 07:15 PM
Yes but this is not a general admission event. DMB could have made it one if they wanted, but they didnt.
jenniferlee
04-21-2004, 07:20 PM
A) So??
B) the point of reserved seats is so they dont sell out the floor too heavy so people will be comfortable...
C) yes...you would???

it's not snobby, it's a matter of having your space...if i'm in the front and people start folding up chairs, it becomes a GA show and people start pushing and shoving to get closer...you're experiences with the Dead may be different because most of my GA expereriences most people try to get as close as possible so when the artist comes on stage there is always a push towards them....and with as many people as there will be with DMB it'd just be caos...if you remember a few years back there was an incedent in D.C. and Dave wanted to stop the show because people were pushing to get closer and some people were getting hurt...if anything at all it's for safety.

I think that should say somthing to people dont you...how much better is your experience when you have to shove your way through other people to get what...10 feet closer to the band. Maybe DMB audiences should take a lesson from other bands fanbases..i.e The Dead, String Cheese Incident, Phish...and relax a little, dont think so much about yourself and think more about the audience as a whole and your experience as well as the bands will be much better....

Enough with this bullshit about folding up chairs. You better not fold up my chair or I'm gonna turn around swinging. I got lucky when I got row 2, I doubt I'll ever get it again and I dont want row 55 pushin their way next to me. Audience as a whole. I would if it was a general admission show but it's not.
GO TO THE LAWN if you wanna dance around swirling your arms!

If I'm told I'm gonna get a velvet rope, damnit I want one. Just like everyone in the first 15 rows expect to be the only ones in those 15 rows. We were told we were going to be there and are told nobody else will be there crowding us. We have those spots reserved! Why dont you undertand that? It's not about being a snob, it's not about feeling better than the rest of the people behind us. You have such a skewed point of view on this it amazes me.

Actually classifying someone on how many shows they haven't been to is the stuck up thing here.
I don't want to experience an "unified crowd"
I want to listen to music and NOT have a) my chair removed from behind me and, b) not get pushed around because people are trying to push to the front.
I want to hear music.
You can have your unified crowd up on the lawn.

Leave the seats alone, they cost $60+/each. ;)

Really, because the past two year at the Gorge for DMB, I have had my chair removed without even asking me and/or been surged upon.

Nah, I prefer watching it live. Standing...with my chair comfortably behind me. Sitting when I want to. Enjoying THE MUSIC. Not experiencing an unified crowd. Not being bothered.
ENJOYING THE MUSIC
that is what I am there for.

I have a knee issue. I can't stand for a couple hours at a time too much. So I expect the chair that I paid for to be behind me when I want to sit down.

great...no proble...keep your chair...but dont get upset if people around u want to enjoy themselves by dancing and having a good time..at a concert its unreasonable to expect you ont get your toes stepped on a few times...thats the nature of the game...maybe indoor venues w/ attached chairs are more suitable for someone that is so stuffy...
Duckyguy
04-21-2004, 09:07 PM
Maybe the lawn is more suitable for people who want to dance.
EDIT: To each their own. But I guarantee that my chair will prevail over anyone trying to take it away from me.

See there you go again with classifying by how many shows someone has been to.

And you sound pretentious when you make a statement like that. It doesn't matter if you've been to 15 shows and I've been to 0...I have more of a right to do whatever the fuck I want with MY chair than you do. I paid 70+ dollars for that right...don't fuck with it because it's more convenient for you.
EDIT: And this conversation has easily run it's course...there's never going to be a consensus about this folding chair debate. But it does seem that everytime it's brought up, the majority of Dave fans want that chair there to avoid being potentially squished. And so does Dave.

Maybe you should find somewhere else to post.
I've been to enough shows to know what I like and don't like. Sat in reserved and lawn and enjoyed both, but no matter where I'm at, I want my space. If I have row 55 reserved, I don't want 56 shoving up my ass, and I don't want to be doing it to 54. Stay in you area, that is what the band wants, the fans around you want, and the venue wants. If DMB wanted it differently they would get rid of pavillion seats and have it GA up there.

You've completely tromped on your own previous statement. First you say that row 16 should be able to mingle with row 11, and now you say that you shouldn't have to shove your way forward to get a better experience. :freak
There is room aplenty to dance with the chairs where they are. In fact there's more room to dance with the chairs where they are. It's set up so everyone gets their own little space of the venue. If someone is lucky enough to be close, let them be. One of these days you'll be there and you'll enjoy it so much more without row 16 trying to butt-fuck you.

YES YES YES YES YES YES IT IS I have row 2 and you have row 16. Thats why on my ticket is printed a certain row and on your ticket is printed a certain row. For fuck sakes DMB could have made it a general admission floor if they wanted to, the gorge allows this. and no they wouldnt be faced with overselling it because tehy limit the amount of tickets they sell for the floor area. Just like they limit the amount of tickets for the lawn, the lawn is GA and they cap it at 12 000ish they dont keep selling lawn tickets forever and ever just because its GA. Theyknow 12000 people can fit therefore we sell 12000 tickets.
Isnt it funny though that its people at the back that wish to initiate chair folding so they can move forward, so its them wanting to invade the space of people ahead of them. I have never in my life been to a show when someone infront of me folded their chair and motioned for people to move forward, but rather its someone in the back who insists on coming forward. If you want the crowd experience than turn around and look back, see the green, go there. Oh but wait no you want to get closer AND get to dance like a fool, thats just gettin greedy!

dmbpromoguy
04-22-2004, 03:17 PM
ummmmm......... you arent really looking for a way to please everyone, but rather a way to please yourself. You didnt get any support in here really for the chair folding rant. There is an easy way to please everyone.
People who want to have their own space without being pushed around by others and those who like to have a defined area to call their own may purchase a seat in the reserved area. Thus giving them exclusive use of the 3 foot square area where their seat sec and row #'s are located.
People who want to flail about, be part of the mass mob crowd, and who wish to have a communal experience with other people may purchase tickets to sit on the lawn.
Does anyone else think this is a good solution to the problem, a solution that really meets everyones needs????

I was just watching the Gorge Special, remembered seeing you post a bunch about how your seat is. Well, here's a good picture of where you'll be. Looks pretty far to the side but you'll get a good view of Dave, Stefan & Roi. :thumbsup
Zoom in on it, you'll obviously be on the left hand side. The row just out of view in Sec B would be row 11. So you can follow where it would curve around.

got any pics of sec b row 30ish? and how much general admission space is there in comparison to the reserved seating? making the trip from dallas for my first gorge show:)

There's a lot of lawn. This picture really isn't that skewed.

The lawn goes all the way up to the trees, viewed from beginning of lawn, top of terrace walkway.

Reserved at Gorge = the only option.
I have never sat lawn in my five years of seeing DMB at the Gorge. I have seen how early people line up just to get into the lawn and it doesn't look fun, especially when it is hot. Even if you are at the back of reserved seating, at least you don't have to arrive 5-6 hours before the show.

Yeah, it sucks sitting in the blazing sun all day, esp if you like to get fuzzy for showtime. Just tires you out. But otherwise, I don't agree. Reserved is def my favorite place to be but lawn can be sweet too. Last year, Night2, I had a couple of friends go in early & save a spot. But they only went in like 2 hours before the show started & we had a sweet spot at the bottom of the lawn above the walkway(above the terrace). I had one of the best times ever that night. Especially w/ the view, sun setting over the Gorge, seeing all of the people below you. It was money. So this year, I decided to get Reserve, Lawn, Reserved.
First night, you're right, reserved is sweet b/c you don't have to worry about getting there early, esp after the drive up there. Lawn is a nice change for the Sat show, just relaxing, letting the weekend get into full swing. Sunday, gotta have a good reserved seat to end the weekend, hopefully it'll be a sweet show to cap off the run.

Yeah I heard there were problems all 3 nights...but I can only speak for sure about Saturday.
During the midway point in Two Step the speakers began to cut out. No sound for 20 seconds, sound again for 5 seconds, no sound for 10 seconds...shit like that. During Cry Freedom and What You Are they were totally fucked up so it was hard to hear anything. The crowd would cheer when they came back on just to have them go back out again.
It sucked balls.

So here is a question...... From looking at other seating maps of other venues it seems like the reserved seating at the gorge is notnearly as deep as others. I mean some venues have sections 100, 200, 300, 400, and in the 100's there are rows P and Q.
For example Toronto Molsom Am sec 102 and 202 have a total of 40 rows... count in 303 and 405/6 there are a total of about 70 rows of seats from the front row (A) of 102 to the back row (O)of 406.
at the Gorge there are 55 rows...
I dunno just from looking at all the maps and seating charts the gorge reserved section seems much smaller or compact than all others. I've never been to an outdoor event so I have nothing to compare to. Except for that I see people not happy with having tix in row 40..... where as a comparason people are really happy to have sec seats in the back of sec 202 of toronto, which with the break between 102 and 202 means they are actually farther away than 40 rows. I dunno, i just find it odd.
People think toronto 202 row U is decent while gorge row 40 is bad..... I would think that toronto 406 row O is bad!!! thats some 70 rows back.

Arena shows have stadium seating, so you still get a decent view, just sitting higher.
The gorge only has fold out chairs on a big slab of concrete. If you are shorter and behind some tall people, you're screwed from seeing.

I've never been to another big amp either but I def wouldn't bitch about row 40 @ Gorge unless I was in the far outside seat on either side. They're good seats, but I think that @ the Gorge especially, just b/c of the atmosphere, people really want to be close so row 40 does become a "sucky" seat. The closest I've been yet will be 9/5 this year in row 22 & I'm super stoked. But I had no prob buying somebody's WH tix for row 34 on Friday. Row 34 is great as far as I'm concerned. Though maybe I've got a diff view from most b/c one show I sat at the VERY top of the lawn & it sucked.

I dont see the appeal of the lawn just yet. never been to an outdoor event, never been to an event with a rush GA section, never been to an event on a grass lawn.... I hear ya. But what I'm saying is it's a waste to miss the sunset if you're gonna go up to the lawn at all. The view is completely diff from the reserved section and even the bottom of the lawn. It's a spectacular view. Never gets old. If you're going to all 3 shows, you should at least catch the sunset from up top once.

The sun is going to set well before the band gets on stage this year because the shows are in Sept. In 2002 the shows were almost the same dates as this year and the sun was gone at 8:20 when the band came on. Dave even made a point of telling the crowd on Friday that they were coming on early the next day to try to get part of the sunset. Last year the shows were early Aug. dates and the timing was perfect. The sun set around 8:15 and minutes later the band followed. My point is that if you have reserved you can still see the sunset from up top and have time to get back to your seat.

They have gone and changed the time of the shows this year and bumped it up an hour though. Originally start time was 7:00 then assumng DMB would be on a little over an hour later, but a couple weeks ago (and printed on the tickets) the start time is 6:00, so we could assume DMB wouldbe on well before 8:00.
Gates open @ 3:00 ticket start time says 6:00, Mraz starts 6:30ish, DMB 7:30-7:45 is my guess.

I've only been seeing shows since '02, but the routine is usually:
7pm to 740pm opener
740pm to 810pm change over
anywhere from 815pm to 830pm DMB hits the stage... closer to 830 in 2003
Assuming Mraz doesn't do a longer set, I'm guessing DMB will be on stage by 730pm at the latest. How does that time with sunsets?

It's all perspective... people just like feeling they are better off than the vast majority of others :) It's true. Anywhere in the 200s is "good" for a larger pavilion like Toronto, yet the Gorge equivalent is "bad".
Similarly, getting row 40 on an arena floor puts you almost at the back and it kinda sucks. But row 40 at a massive place like Hershey is not bad -- considering the whole GA section is still behind you.

Just to throw it out there, could they be changing things up this year and start doing 2 sets again? Hit the stage a little earlier than in the past with a break somewhere in the middle and then commin back and doin another half. Then the shows would end at a somewhat similar time compared to the past years. Not likely, i know, but I'd be up for it. It'd be a nice change.

There's about enough daylight for the first song... or half the first song. In 2002 they started the second show a little early so they could film Grace is Gone. It was still only early by about 1/2 hour though. ... so about sunset... time for heaven to shine.

Its nice because there are a bunch of restaurants, Target, Old Navy, etc. Its like a suburb in the middle of nowhere.
I stood there last year and it takes about 30-40 minutes. Just watch out for the pigs :babe driving back at night. The roads are dark and they like to hide. Its a pretty scenic drive during the day.

30-40 minutes? That's not bad at all! Mind you, it's not as easy as the 8 blocks from Alpine to The Country Inn & Suites, but from looking at the map I was definitely thinking it would be an hour if not two.
What do you think the traffic will be like before the show? Is it like Alpine where it gets backed up for miles on the highway?
Might be worth bringing the radar detector along since we'll be doing other traveling during the 3 days both before and after the shows, too. Unless the airport security will have an issue with it being in my bag....damn terrorists!

What do you think the traffic will be like before the show? Is it like Alpine where it gets backed up for miles on the highway?
The way that you will come in from Wanatchee is different than people that are coming from I-90. Traffic is not a problem until you get close, usually near Wildhorse is where the road backs up. Its not bad at all.

I checked out the BW when the fake dates were posted, and there was nothing available, so, I knew something was up. I ended up finding a single room a few hours later after much searching. I took it for $95 Cdn/night, $105 Cdn after you factor in the roll-away bed. I put in for the WH package and requested a room with 2 beds which costs $120 US a night. Much more $$$ than the regular cost of a room, but if we're all comfy, I suppose it's worth it.....

Hey,
I saw a couple of you guys talking in the gorge thread about dave's bogart on the mraz side stage show in 02. I just wanted to let you know that actually the show that he bogarted on was in the parking lot. In addition to the side stage by the beer garden there’s a little stage there where people play before the gates open. This is where Mraz was playing and Dave hopped up on stage. For those who've never been to the Gorge or didn't know about this stage, definitely be sure to check out that as well, as the people I've seen play there the years I've been have all been entertaining and as the video which so many of us have seen has shown, just about anything can happen. The Gorge weekend is gonna be great, I can’t wait! Thanks all,

On the lawn you can go where you want, in the reserved section, I wouldnt suggest it, you just might get beat up :twak
And staying at a youth hostel in seattle..... dear lord, I would chec that out, most international hostels have curfews and you will not make it back to seattle in time for curfew by any means. The show will end around 11:00, you wont get out of there till 11:30 then its a 3 hour drive back to seattle, probably 4 hours due to traffic getting out of the venue, so you would be back in seattle around 3:30 am. I would seriously think about camping. Depending on when you arrive in seattle, and how many shows you are going to, and if you 'pack light' I can fit you in my car and pick you up in seattle if you are coming alone. Cost would be $50 which covers transportation cost (gas) and 3 nights camping. I'm picking other people up in Seattle at the airport around 10am on the Friday.

Hey there I just replied to your e-mail a few minutes ago....
From what I hear, its 3 days or nothing, if you go one day you will see what its like and kick yourself for not staying to see more...... or so I have been told, so I went ahead and got tix for all three days and cant wait! And hey you are traveling all this way, for a once in a lifetime opportunity..... go for it! As far as daytime activities well.... Shows end at 11, back in the campground by 12, apparantly the party continues somewhat from there. Sleep till 9 or 10, go down to the big ass river swim for a while BBQ the afternoon away, then the gates to the venue open up at 3:00 or 4:00, then you do it all again......from what I hear!
come to this website and join us in there.....

That timeline is sort of correct. Out of my many trips to the Gorge...on average, it takes about 60-70 minutes to get out of the parking lot after the show has finished depending on where you parked.
And from the Gorge to Seattle is about 150 miles...which will probably take about 2.5 hours (speed limit is 70mph on I-90 and there won't be much traffic). You'll probably make it back to Seattle around 2:30am.

Did this last year. Very stupid on my part, but I waited to make hotel reservations 'til about 2 weeks before the show. Seattle was the best I could do and I checked in at about 3:00AM, dead tired.

Also, i have a really dumb question but i can't find the anwser anywhere. What is the story behind the fire dancer? I love the symbol, but i don't know where is started?
good news about the gorge. you obviously understand the draw behind it all. as for the firedancer, check out the search function up top and you'll find all you need to know on its history.

I saw some others are staying at the Best Western Ephrata! Me too!! No one heads in that direction after the concerts, so once you're out of the parking lot and on the highway, it's smooth sailing.

Question about flights...I'll be in NYC until Aug. 28 or 29 and thought it might be nice to hang out in NYC for a couple of extra days and then fly directly to seattle. I was planning on going to seattle on the 1st anyway. Could I get a flight from NYC to seattle and then return seattle-memphis?

I AM SOOOOOO EXCITED!!!!! It will be my first year at The Gorge. I am going with an even bigger Dave Head than me. We are camping at The Gorge. I hear it is one of the most beautiful places on the planet and one of the best experiences one can have in a lifetime. I look forward to seeing all the ants! I haven't visited the site in a while...I forgot how much I've missed it.
Yeah beer! Yeah pot! Yeah camping! Yeah Dave!
Much love.

I am sure a flight like this is possible, but it is usually fairly expensive because the airline treats it as essentially 2 1-way flights. I may be wrong, but whenever I have done flights like this it is not super cheap, but it is possible.

Its very possible, call around to various airlines and check their deals. Check with discount airlines first as usually they sell all of their seats as one way seats. Airlines such as Southwest for example each seat is one way, its up to you if you chose to fly back to the same place you started from.
Southwest however doesnt fly to NYC (Buffalo/LongIsland/Albany only) and they dont go to Memphis, but check around to other airlines, its very possible to do.

Don't trouble the Gorge-goers with your petty questions!! They're too busy drinking to post an answer.

I have tickets to Saturday and Sunday's shows so am on a waiting list for the Wildhorse since we're not coming in until Saturday. Sold my Friday night tix since I can't go - bummed cause I love the Wild Horse and they said chances are very slim on getting in on Saturday. Anyone want to transfer their reservation to me?
Thanks,
JW
