:monkey I'm trekking from Columbus, OH for the Gorge shows with my wife and another couple. We are Gorge virgins!. We have 2 rooms reserved at a hotel about 20 minutes from the venue but after seeing the Gorge DVD we are pondering the camping option. To paraphrase Dave from the DVD... I don't know why you'd want to be in a hotel room at the Gorge.

But before we take the plunge, can anyone give us some insights on the camping scene? Can you get in and out on a daily basis with a vehicle? Are the sites reserved? Are there shower facilities other than the river and bathrooms other than porto-johns? Since we are flying to Seattle we will only be able to bring the basics and we need to know the pitfalls before we opt for camping. By the way, if we opt for camping, we may be able to work something out with anyone interested in our rooms.:thumbsup

Hey Joyride - I've camped at the Gorge for 30+ shows so I can be your source of information and do agree with Dave - camping is where it's at. The camping scenes are cramped but it's all good. It's not like your local state park camping facility. Shower facilities - never showered there so can't comment but the facility seems ok as my wife has used them - your basic public shower with stalls. Porta-johns are the accepted tool for releasing those frosty adult beverages - there are "normal" restrooms near the showers but we always bring a roll or two of TP for those porta-johns. Be advised - you will probably end up in the back of the campground so it's a pretty good walk to the showers and normal restrooms. There are also restrooms at the store along the walk from the campground to the venue. Regarding what to bring - we always eat at our site before the show but you probably won't be able to bring your bbq but cold sandwiches, etc. from the local grocery will do. That along with plenty of cold beer and lots of ICE in your cooler!!!!! It can get hot - I was at a Phish show once when it was 110 degrees and we kept buying bags of ice to simply set on our heads. It's the desert - but it will be Septebmer so hopefully 80 degrees will be the temp. A basic tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad (for comfort), toiletries, blanket, etc. will be wanted while camping although I've seen many a person sleep under the stars - myself included. Oh wait - I think I passed out. :freak

Yes, you can take your car out as much as you'd like once you've paid. You'll get a pass that you'll hang on the rearview mirror that will allow this. Once you've established your camping area - it's pretty much yours until you leave. Other then that - ask away or you can email me directly at webbah@comcast.net with more questions. Good luck and have a blast - you're gonna love the Gorge. :D

Oh and also...

The band's been playing the four new songs every night of the tour. Which makes sense to get people down with them before the new album debuts. Now, seeing as how most likely, more than 50% of the crowd at the Gorge will be there all three nights, do you all think they'll keep this pattern?

I've got nothing against the new music. In fact I've even grown to really like a couple of the new tunes...but these same 4 songs 3 nights in a row? Come on! I hope the band realizes this, and adjusts the setlists.

That's it. Still unbelIEVABLY psyched to be at the Gorge this year. Hope to see you all there.

I just went to the Gorge this past weekend for the Warped Tour. I'm not really into the punk music acts they had there, but my friend got free tickets through his work and I wasn't going to turn down a free trip to the Gorge. It's crazy what a different vibe they had going on there with all the punk fans as opposed to the DMBers. It was still beautiful, though, super windy. Unfortuneatly, the summer line-up is not as good there this year as it has been in the past, so this was my first trip out there this summer. Now its just a matter of waiting for Labor Day. See ya'll there!

Yeah you're absolutely right. Other than Jack Johnson and DMB it's pretty lackluster this year. They've been hurt a lot by Clear Channel and the newest amphitheatres in Washington (White River & Clark County). Plus, there just aren't that many great tours this year it seems. Hopefully the lineup will improve in '05.

But if you love the songs in the setlists they play, then you're all set. I wouldn't even necessarily mind hearing all the new ones 3 times anyway...just curious...

I hope they will mix it up a bit with the new songs, maybe spread them out so they play the 4 songs twice each over the 3 nights. They'll most likely play Thing a couple of times too.
I noticed last year they seemed to play more rare stuff in the first half of the tour, and kinda stopped in the 2nd half(the half i went to shows in). I hope this year they do the opposite and by the time Labor Day rolls around they will be playing some rare stuff. You have to figure we'll get something special as its the only 3 night venue this year, and. . Well. . Its THE GORGE. Hopefully it'll be 3000 miles well worth it!!

You can bring camping gear on a plane, we are flying from Newark NJ and we are checking 2 big bags with all our camping gear. You cant bring anything that contains gas or flammable items... that's the only thing I'm aware of.

One thing to be aware of is weight limits as you will have to pay more if your bag is over a certain weight and/or size. If my memory serves me correct most airlines limit it to 50 or 55 pounds for regular customers. I would suggest contacting the airline so you will be prepared to pay the fee.

Well our stuff isn't heavy at all. My boyfriend is the big camping guru so he buys all the stuff that weighs barely anything. Our sleeping bags are only 3 pounds, the tent is pretty small, etc....

I dont think each bag will weigh that much!

AWESOME IDEA!!!! I never even thought of that! My buddy is going to be bringing a 7 person tent, or something silly like that...so at least we won't have to worry about 'housing.' I guess all I'll need is sleeping bags...I don't think I want to try and deal with bringing cooking gear and such. We'll just get food around there maybe...

If you're hoping to get a "first come, first serve" spot somewhere, I'd suggest arriving on Thursday. Aside from that, the GORGE campground is never, ever, ever full/soldout. There's always room there. You may prefer to camp elsewhere but it's a good alternative, especially since you only have to walk a mile at most to get to & from the venue.

Only thing about the Gorge camping is all the horror stories I've read in this very thread. We are planning to arrive in Seattle around 2:00 in the afternoon on Thursday, so maybe if we head right down there we can snatch a spot...WORST case I think we know someone with a hotel room somewhere that we could crash at...

I just some research and found the website that lists the camping gear you are allowed to bring..

Here it is
http://www.tsa.gov/public/interapp/editorial/editorial_1187.xml

and for those of you who can't access it, this is what it says:

Transporting Camping Equipment

Outdoor enthusiasts should carefully prepare and pack to avoid removal of prohibited items from checked baggage or surrendering prohibited items at the security checkpoint. A specific list of all permitted and prohibited items is at (link). Below is information specific to traveling in pursuit of outdoor activities:

Camp Stoves - Can travel as carry-on or checked luggage only if empty of all fuel and cleaned such that vapors and residue are absent. Simply emptying the fuel container is insufficient as flammable vapors remain.

Gasoline - Gasoline or any flammable liquid is prohibited from carry-on and checked luggage.

Aerosol insecticides - Hazardous aerosols, such as insecticides, not listed as excepted personal toiletries are not allowed in either carry-on or checked luggage. Acceptable personal toiletries include hair sprays, deodorants in limited quantities.

Matches and Lighters - Up to 2 lighters and 4 books of safety matches are allowed in your carry-on baggage - NOT checked baggage. Disposable lighters and absorbed liquid lighters are allowed in your carry-on baggage. Lighters with unabsorbed liquid fuel and refillable butane lighters are NOT permitted. Strike anywhere matches are NOT permitted.

Flares - Flare guns are prohibited from carry-on and checked luggage.

Knives & Tools - Knives and tools are prohibited from carry-on luggage. These items should be packed in checked luggage. Any sharp objects packed in checked luggage should be sheathed or securely wrapped to prevent injury to baggage handlers and security screeners.

Animal Repellants - Chemical repellants can be carried in checked luggage if the volume is less than 4 ounces and has less than a 2% active ingredient. Most bear repellants exceed these limitations. We suggest buying such items at your destination and leaving them behind upon return.

My wife and I go every year to the Gorge for DMB, at least since we were married 4 years ago. We have tickets for all 3 nights. 2 Nights in seats and one on the grass. We stay in Wenachee and make a long weekend of it.

I have a question, I hate it that I don't have any pics inside the Gorge. I'm thinking of trying to get my camera in this year. I have a digital Rebel and it won't be easy to hide. I really want to capture some memories. Does anyone have any ideas?

I saw earlier that someone asked this question, but didn't see any replies. I know people get their cameras in because I've seen the DVDs floating around and I know that tapers get all their gear in because I download the shows when I get home (www.sharingthegroove.com (http://www.sharingthegroove.com)).

Depends if you're talking a still camera or video... If it's a still camera , and if your wife has at least a large B-cup bosom, you're golden. Have her wear a bra that provides some good support - i.e. wires. If it splits the tits, the camera will fit unnoticably between them. Try it beforehand. You'll be able to tell if it's going to fly or not.

[QUOTE=Metallinut]Only thing about the Gorge camping is all the horror stories I've read in this very thread.QUOTE]

It all depends on your preferences. I'm 27 & I enjoy getting lit & having a good time. But I don't enjoy 20 yr olds & countless other people being completely drunk, dumbasses. I also don't like Sheriffs & security sneaking up on us out of the dark & taking my stash. I don't appreciate the tall, brown grass growing up out of the cowfield/campground or the lack of shade. I've been there & done that & I've found places to camp that I much prefer over the Gorge.

At the same time, I'd camp at the Gorge campground any day over driving back & forth to a motel/hotel. I love the walk to & from the venue. The campground is huge and if you wind up on the outskirts, it's a lot more tame than it is up @ the front. People are entering & leaving all weekend, so you can move around if you don't like the jerkies you're next to. If you're old enough to drink & you're chill about the drugs you shouldn't have any problems. You also get a spectacular sky above you all night not to mention it's a treat to be outside in that environment all weekend. Some people have had bad experiences & you might too, but I think most people don't. Overall, if you've never been to the Gorge & there's a chance you might not make it back, you should camp. I'd regret it if I'd never been to the Gorge campground just once. It's a real trip being out there for the weekend with a few thousand other DMB fans. Lot of cool people to meet if you're the outgoing type. :thumbsup

I don't know man. Every year I've been, I could've taken a bazooka through the gates w/out a prob. I always get a little sketch if I've got some pot or a flask on me. But I've been patted down, slightly, just one time. My girlfriend walked in with an SLR in her hand, not hiding it at all back in '99. She completely forgot you're not supposed to bring in cameras. Nobody said a thing to her. Overall, it just doesn't seem like security is ever that tight, entering at least, @ the Gorge. I doubt it will change this year. There's really not much risk either. By buddy was taking pics with a very nice camera & lens from 4th/5th row in '02 & they caught him. All they did was take all of his film. Let him keep the camera & told him not to shoot anymore. He was pissed about losing some great shots but very relieved he got to keep his camera.

As far as cameras go, it's always a prob for me b/c I don't drive to the venue so if they catch it, it's a royal pain to get it back to my campsite. If you drive to the venue, do it for sure. If they spot it, you just walk back to the car & try again the next day or you could go back 10 mins later & try a different line. If you've got a Dig Rebel, you can crotch it fairly easily as long as they don't pat you down. Tie the neck strap around your belt buckle & let it hang. You have to take the lens off to do it. But if you have a small lens you can put it in your lady's purse or something. I've got a Canon Elan 7 & it's going in this year, no two ways about it.

I walk in with a pint of alcohol and my camera every year. I just take a sweatshirt with me and roll them up in the sweatshirt and carry it in one of my hands. When I go through the line they ask me to raise my arms and do a quick pat without ever asking to see if there's anything in my sweatshirt. I've always gotten away with it so I'll probably keep on doing it. Give it a try if you want.

[QUOTE=Metallinut]Only thing about the Gorge camping is all the horror stories I've read in this very thread.QUOTE]

:thumbsup

Definitely!!! :thumbsup Don't hotel/motel it just cause the camping is a bit "different" at the Gorge campground. I would MUCH rather camp there then motel it. I've done it - hated it. Then you just feel like your going to a show whereas when you camp - that's when the show starts............ :D

Haha - not if he's like my brother!!!

But seriously - I would think about staying in Seattle until your bro gets into town. It's a minimum of 3 hours each way to and from the airport from the Gorge - minimum! Seattle's a great city - hell - hook up with Johnny D and go to the Hawks game that Thursday night or check out Pioneer Square and all the lovely ladies down there.

As soon as you pull into the Gorge lot..count on your cell service to suck or be non-existent. Radios are a great idea for communication. I have lost contact with numerous friends at the Gorge because of the lack of cell service. Your phone will work fine all the way up to the lots and campground.
This hasn't changed over the last five years, so unless they added more towers this summer expect the same.

security is pretty easy to get through.....cameras, alcohol can make it in. Just look for the youngest person patting down people, usually a safe bet.

Security is pretty light there - especially for DMB. I've always got what I wanted in to the venue.

Speaking of fun bags - last year my wife and my buddie's girlfriend put our fun bags (ziplocs full of liquor) in their tank tops and I'll say it was quite a sight to see. A nice, cheap, temporary boob job that had all the guys in line ogling their jiggling. I loved it. But everytime we go to that extreme we just laugh cause we never get checked. Sure - some people get the random once over but don't sweat it. If they find it - oh well - on to the beer garden......

Here was the setlist:

Seek Up *
Heartbeat * -->
Pantala Naga Pampa * -->
Rapunzel *
The Stone *
I'll Back You Up *
Dancing Nancies *
Satellite *
Recently *
#41 *+
JTR *
Grace Is Gone *
Lie In Our Graves *
Bartender *
Crush *
Granny *
Two Step *
Encore:
All Along the Watchtower *

* with Butch Taylor on keys
+ with Mitch Rutman on electric guitar

4 years ago today I was at the Gorge, wrapping up my 2nd weekend there. I was in the front row for the first time at a DMB show. The show opened with Seek Up (a first for me), and it was also the first time I heard Nancies and IBYU live.

Here was the setlist:

Seek Up *
Heartbeat * -->
Pantala Naga Pampa * -->
Rapunzel *
The Stone *
I'll Back You Up *
Dancing Nancies *
Satellite *
Recently *
#41 *+
JTR *
Grace Is Gone *
Lie In Our Graves *
Bartender *
Crush *
Granny *
Two Step *
Encore:
All Along the Watchtower *

* with Butch Taylor on keys
+ with Mitch Rutman on electric guitar
i'll be seeing you up there this year again... did you go to bristow this year? i think i remember you saying you were there last year and i remembered how you described yourself. remember when jtr opened and closed the three night stand a few years back?

Just Kevin and me. Well, I'm sure there's other Minnesotans in general, I just don't know them. We're making a whole vacation out of it...taking off on 8/26 and going to visit his parents up in northwest Washington and then down to Oregon to meet see his grandmother and then to see some friends of ours in Waterloo and then the shows are the end of our vacation. It's gonna be nuts. You two will get along real well. I'm wondering which one of you will be able to drink the other under the table. I think it will be a neck and neck race. :D Brian may be getting some seriously loud phone calls!

Hey i will be driving from san francisco as well and it will be my first trip to the gorge. I am thinking its going to be more along the lines of 12-15 hours, give or take a few. Are you going alone? Where are you staying? camping? we are also doing all 3 nights at the gorge staying at the venue campsite. Let me know...we are not leaving until later thursday night because of work and classes that can't be missed. What time are you leaving thursday? :hug

SF to Gorge is going to take more like 18-20 hours including food/gas stops, etc. It's about 900 miles probably give or take. If you're gonna make the Friday night show - better drive fast!

I could make it from Los Angeles in 18-20 hours, doubt it will take that long from the Bay Area.

Yahoo Maps says 12 hours from SF to Seattle... then add 2.5 to Gorge. So, I guess closer to 15 hours is more accurate. There are 3 of us driving up... all first timers at Gorge and we're camping! I want to be on the road by 6pm at the latest. I do plan to drive fast. :)

You will want to go East once you get to Portland, way faster then going all the way to Seattle.

4 - 5 hours from Portland. Take I-84 east from Portland. Go about 120 miles to Biggs Jct. Head north on highway 97 (I think) for about 2 hours. When you get to I-90 go east for about a half hour and boom, you'll see the famous Gorge Amphitheatre sign (as seen in the GIG video.) It is easily one of the most beautiful drives you'll ever make. 101 may be a little better.

OK as per the request of...... mihighdavehead........ I will start a web listing of Gorge go-ers...... I'll do this in combination with Ants, AMI and friends via the warehouse...... I no longer have an active account on nancies so I really dont care about them :) Anyway, I'll set up a weblisting split by means of DMB fan site, under each fansite heading I would like to have......

-Your name AND YOUR SCREEN-NAME

-Where you are coming from

-How you are arriving.... Train, Plane or Automobile..... If you want to give specific flight number you can do that too to find other people arriving on your flight

-Where you are staying

-Where you have tickets for each of the 3 nights

-What fansite heading you would like to be listed under

PLEASE PM ME OR E-MAIL ME dmbpromo@hotmail.com (dmbpromo@hotmail.com) PLEASE DONT POST IN HERE IT WILL JUST GET LOST IN THE SHUFFLE!!!!! I would love to make a new thread for this.... but yeah, ants wont let me make new threads, so! This is the best I can do, its now up to you folks to spread the word!

I'll work on it over the next few days and put it online for everyone to see. Spread this around to all your Gorge go-ers

It does seem that everyone is staying at Gettys rather then the venue campsite. I have heard mixed reviews about the gorge campsites, so I guess i'll just have to figure it out on my own. What can you expcet from a first timer? Next year its Gettys baby! Unless everyone piles up at Wildhorse, then you know go where the party is at. Somedevil22 are you staying at the venue sites? I lurk in this thread so behave.
:lol Yea, behave. I'm likely to do that. ;) :p :D

My brother will be there....yaayyyy....he always makes the Gorge trip with us.
we are both staying in Moses lake and I am definitely hitting up the bar in your hotel...to increase my chances of sharing a drink with one of the band members. Radios are a must once in the lots......don't worry we all will be hangin all weekend.
I don't know where my brother's seats are but we will be here:
N1 sec B row 26
N2 sec A row 23
N3 sec C row 15
Well, if your brother is half as awesome as you and Michelle it'll make for a good good time! Your seats are nowhere near Kevin and me but hopefully we'll all be able to congregate...otherwise Brian will be receiving multiple calls! :D We'll be happy to host you at the BW for drinks, assuming I EVER get some some information about the deal from WH. Haven't gotten a single bit of details from them yet. I hope they don't do the wrist band thing like our hotel for Alpine did...that made it difficult to have guests. :BANG

within the next couple of weeks we should pick a frs radio channel for all to chat and use to find one another...cell phone service is non-existent in the lots.
Hey we can use 12-9 the same one we are talking about using for San Fran...its easy and can be remembered! Stick that in your pipe and smoke it eh? :haha
Thoughts and feeligns on the channel?? I give it :thumbsup :thumbsup !!!

I'm actually living in Issaquah right now, but I'm moving into the city next month, probably either Queen Anne or Capitol Hill area. What about you?

webbah
08-12-2004, 05:10 PM
The Quah eh? My good friend lives out there. I live in Bothell actually. In my single days I lived in Magnolia - a very cheap cab ride to take my drunk ass home from Pioneer Square! :D

I can't wait to get into the city. It's nice out in Issy, lots of nature, but not enough action for me right now. I like Magnolia too, it's kind of far from the freeway though. Cheap cab rides are where it's at!

unless you are going to drive into Seattle, you won't drive through this city.
It is on the way to the Gorge from Seattle :)

The large towns get few and far between once you go east of Issaquah. It's def a good place to load up before heading into the mountain pass.

Or North Bend - last fast food for miles!

stimmerman - you're right about magnolia - deathly far from I-5 - felt like I was trapped when going out of town. Queen Anne is solid - lots of action nearby.

Is there somewhere between Moses Lake and the venue or will be able to find everything we need right in Moses Lake?

 $10 for water!!!!? God, what do they charge for beer?
Do they let you bring in "factory sealed" bottles or at least empty ones you can fill at a drinking fountain? And then do they make you throw away the caps? That drives me nuts. I'm a spiller...

I don't think you can bring in your own water. You used to be able to, but now you can't even bring in empty containers: http://www.hob.com/venues/concerts/gorge/general_info.asp
