Anyone going to Gorge from the DC/MD area? I'm flying out of BWI on Southwest 8:40AM flight on Thursday. I was wondering if anyone here was flying with me? :)

Here's a story related to my DDTW openers. At the MCI Center on 12.22.02, I was sitting with some guys from IL and we were trying to guess the opener. They joked that it would probably be WTWE, because they had heard it open two shows that week. (I have never heard WTWE open a show.) Then I said that my only repeat opener (at that point) was DDTW. Guess what opened that show? DDTW. :lol
I'll be surprised if DDTW doesn't open a show this weekend. :lol

I loved hearing Minarets last year at the Gorge. (That was the last time it was played, too.)
You know, of the "rare" songs like Minarets, Last Stop, Dreaming Tree, Halloween, etc, Minarets has a pretty good shot. If you look at the tour history for Minarets, it is randomly played every so often. :thumbsup

Yeah it would. I've heard two Seek Up openers (8.6.00 Gorge & 9.11.03 Hershey) and both were great shows.

:ggoat Do you guys think the fans at the Gorge will be "the best of the best?" I sure as hell hope so. I was at the Gorge for the 01 and 02 shows, but skipped last year. It was great in 01, because not many fands were at the hotel we were at (with Leroi, Stephan, Boyd, Butch & the Ladies). Then in 02 there were alot more fans that came to that hotel for that reason. Oh well....
Subject change: Maybe I'm getting older, or the fans are getting younger, but this year at Alpine was just a wierd sight. We tailgated next to a group of kids that had to be from the ages of 16-18. They listened to rap the whole time and all had on polo shirt's with the f#$*ing collars up!!! I'm pretty sure those kids, and alot of other just like them just go for the atmosphere (party, and hit on girls). But that was at Alpine, and an easy drive for anyone in the midwest. So, back to my original question. Is the Gorge different? I mean, it's pretty much in the middle of nowhere. I suppose some of "those" kids might live in Seattle, and make the 3 hour drive. But, I just think of the Gorge as sacred grounds. I'm sure it will be alot of great people flying in from around the country/world. That's what I'm hoping for anyways. Can't wait for this weekend. See you guys in a few days. Oh yeah, I'm from Minnesota btw.

Have you ever been to the Gorge? In the 10 DMB shows that I've seen at the Gorge, the only guest (besides Butch) was Mitch Rutman, former DMB caterer. I missed the shows in 2001, when the lovely ladies were there.
In other words, the Gorge is not a venue known for guests.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love it if some year DMB had a cool opener at the Gorge who could guest with them, but I don't see it happening this year.
(After all, if Ben Harper didn't guest in LA, then Jason Mraz probably won't guest either.)

I can't see Mraz adding anything worthwhile to a DMB performance. He is a mediocre guitarist, the best thing he has going for him is his voice. But as for guesting, I think not.

Wear whatever you would normally wear (t-shirt, tank top) and bring a sweatshirt for walking back to your car/campsite. :) That's what I do.
Now here's a Gorge quote...
"Hope y'all enjoying yourself. Thank you very much for coming out to this beautiful place... It's nice that we can all come out and have a good time this far away from anything." -Dave Matthews, 8.4.00

white poster board, with BOWA in big black letters. its been to all the shows in my sig, this tour and Dave and Butch have been acknowledging it a few times on this tour, were hoping for a BOWA opener one of the 3 nights!!!
here is where im gonna be sitting,
night 1 Sec B row 4 (not sure of seat #'s yet)
night 2 LAWN
night 3 Sec B row 4 (not sure of seat #'s yet)
and im gonna be sitting beside marcy, (marhoochia) she posts her a lot, shes been seing the band quite a bit on this tour as well, and she is gonna have her
"my pussy's name is tinsly" (for her cat of course :D )
poster with her, boyd has been seeing it around at the shows she has been going to...

I agree.
My theory is the only reason they played it at all last year was because of Dave's promise to us in 2002. (Notice how it wasn't played after the Gorge last year.)
They've been sounding great this year playing standards that they feel comfortable with. All I'm hoping for is 3 solid shows, and if they want to throw in a few surprises, that'll just be icing on the cake. :thumbsup

IMPORTANT DMB UPDATE:We would like to inform the concert goers attending the Dave Matthews Band concert at the Gorge on September 3, 2004 of anticipated traffic congestion near Vantage. The construction project building truck climbing lanes on Interstate 90 from Ryegrass to Vantage will still have the roadway reduced to one lane in the eastbound direction over the Labor Day weekend. We anticipate significant delays on Friday, September 3rd between 2pm and midnight.

Screw waiting in traffic, esp when you're only about 10 miles from cracking a beer & layin in the grass. Don't think my nerves could handle it after waiting the last 6 months to get there.

Just thought ya'll might want to keep this in mind:
IMPORTANT DMB UPDATE:We would like to inform the concert goers attending the Dave Matthews Band concert at the Gorge on September 3, 2004 of anticipated traffic congestion near Vantage. The construction project building truck climbing lanes on Interstate 90 from Ryegrass to Vantage will still have the roadway reduced to one lane in the eastbound direction over the Labor Day weekend. We anticipate significant delays on Friday, September 3rd between 2pm and midnight.

Thanks. I remember them doing construction in that area last year too. :violent :twak :BANG (Sorry, just really wanted to use the violent icons that I don't often get to use. :lol )
Another traffic tip that I give every year... maybe a few people pick up on it... so even if it saves one person hours of sitting in the line of cars then it's worth it... is use the "locals" Gorge exit. Don't use the one that everybody else coming from Seattle uses. It's not too hard to figure out which exit I mean, since there are only two exits to the Gorge from I-90. But seriously, the first time I saw DMB at the Gorge (7.16.99) we took the "wrong" exit and sat in the line of cars for at least an hour waiting to get to the Gorge's parking lot. The next night we took the "best" exit and we got to the parking lot very quickly. It really makes a huge difference.

True Dat!(sorry, just wanted to use some ghetto lingo that I don't often get to use ;) ) The "eastern" hwy exit is def a key ingredient to starting the weekend off on the right foot. Esp when you stay @ Wildhorse, the road takes you right to it & you don't have to wait in the damn parking lot traffic for no reason. :thumbsup

My best friend just smashed his face in a car accident... over 20 fractures in his face and is unable to make the show. He is undergoing massive reconstructive surgery as I type this. I'd be there with him, but I live 10 hours away! :-( :'(
Now to my predicament... he had the rental car, hotel and everything else in his name. I knew NOTHING. If someone doesn't mind squeezing me into their car (I'm flying into Seattle at 10 am on the 2nd) and perhaps sharing a small space on the floor in their hotel or camper... or hell, I don't care, I'd be very appreciative. I am more than willing to reimburse you for all of my taken space.
Thank you for reading this... and please pray for my best friend, Dan! :-(

I hope they don't play The Last Stop. Last year's wasn't that hot, and they'd been playing throughout the tour. Imagine what it'll sound like with no practice.
I disagree. The version from last year was on the CP compainion CD right? I think that version sounds mint. I wont be disapointed witha version like that at all. I do however agree that if they try to play it this time they will be a little rusty because up to that point last year they had played it what like 10 times.

The earlier you get to the whole venue area, the better. The majority of people drive in from the west on I-90 & there are always a lot of people coming & going when you have a 3-night stand. Shouldn't be too bad on Saturday, but within a couple of hours of showtime there's always a lot of traffic getting from the highway to the amphitheatre. You don't want to get stuck in couple miles of stop & go traffic just waiting to park

hey all. im making my first trip to the gorge this year and just had a few questions for those who have been there. i saw that there is a general store or whatever at the campgrounds and i was wondering if any knew if everything was overpriced and what not. secondly its seems from what ive read that there are multiple camp grounds there but the dmb website just says theres camping adjacent to the amphitheatre so i was wondering what the most popular grounds were or where i should follow signs to when driving there to get to the grounds nearest to the venue. i guess thats it then. so if anyone has some info please let me no cause im leaving tomorrow morning. thanks and see ya'll soon.

Gorge camp ground (sucks, No shade and you can't leave)
Vantage (OK, plenty of shade, on the water, but they have a quiet time)
Gettys cove (the best, lots of shade on the water, and a huge party all night long)
Cresnt bar(OK, not as many people but still fun)
Moses lake(OK, but it's labor day weekend so it will be PACKED! and there's cops)
So you make the choice. They have a store at the gorge camp ground but it sucks for the real store you go either to George or to Quincy. there is a small store with the basics in Vantage.

In answer to your first question: yes.
To the second, there many popular, lower-priced camp grounds other than the one next to the amphitheater. Many of them take reservations, though, and are probably already going to be full. To get to the Gorge Campground, just follow the signs to the Gorge Amphitheater (and the 5,000 cars that will be in front of you) and you'll see signs directing you to the campground. It's about a quarter mile past the entrance to the amphitheater parking lot.

Report Detail
I-90 (RYEGRASS SUMMIT TO VANTAGE) Project is 82% complete, having used 163 working days. It is anticipated that project work will be completed by late fall of 2004 weather permitting. Drivers traveling eastbound between Kittitas and Vantage should plan for significant delays on Friday September 3rd between 2:00 PM and Midnight due to Labor Day traffic which is expected to be heavier than normal and a Friday evening concert at the Gorge. Travelers with time sensitve plans and those attending the concert are encouraged to allow extra time to reach their destination. Alternate routes are encouraged. During daylight hours on Monday through Thursday construction crews will be working on the eastbound and westbound lanes of Interstate 90 from the area just west of Vantage to the top of the Ryegrass Summit, Milepost 126 to Milepost 136. Traffic on eastbound I-90 will be reduced to one lane at the lower half of the grade between Ryegrass Summit and Vantage, MP 132 to MP 136. The eastbound lane reduction will be in effect 24 hours a day until further notice. The westbound lanes of I-90 from Milepost 136 to 132 are being detoured to the eastbound side with two lanes westbound and one lane eastbound. The traffic in each direction is separated by concrete barrier. Both Ryegrass Rest Areas will remain open westbound and eastbound. LEGAL SPEED LIMIT REDUCTION: The legal speed limit reduced from 70 MPH to 50 MPH eastbound and westbound between Vantage and Ryegrass Summit, milepost 132 to milepost 136. The reduced 50 mph legal speed limit is in effect 24 hours a day until further notice. OVERSIZE LOAD RESTRICTION: The ten foot oversize load restriction will be in effect for eastbound and westbound traffic on Interstate 90, milepost 115 to milepost 136, between Rysgrass Summit and Vantage. The restriction will remain in effect until further notice when the detour is no longer neccessary. All oversize loads must use alternate routes.

Here's the deal there are many places to camp in the area around the gorge
Gorge camp ground (sucks, No shade and you can't leave)
Vantage (OK, plenty of shade, on the water, but they have a quiet time)
Gettys cove (the best, lots of shade on the water, and a huge party all night long)
Cresnt bar(OK, not as many people but still fun)
Moses lake(OK, but it's labor day weekend so it will be PACKED! and there's cops)
So you make the choice. They have a store at the gorge camp ground but it sucks for the real store you go either to George or to Quincy. there is a small store with the basics in Vantage.
alright. sounds good. one more question. do all of these campgrounds generally run the same in price?

Here is what I saw from the bigeyedfish board:
I-90 Travel Alert: Drivers traveling on eastbound Interstate 90 between Kittitas and Vantage should plan for significant delays on Friday, September 3rd. Traffic on eastbound I-90 has been reduced to one lane at the lower half of the grade between Ryegrass Summit and Vantage, milepost 132 to milepost 136. Considerable delays are anticipated on September 3rd between 2:00pm and midnight.
What can drivers expect? Over the past Memorial Day weekend, Friday travelers experienced upwards of 3-hour delays and 8 miles of stop and go traffic approaching the one lane section. Due to the heavy Labor Day traffic expected and a Friday evening concert at the Gorge Amphitheatre, people with time sensitive travel and those attending the concert are encouraged to plan ahead and include additional time to reach their destination. Alternate routes are encouraged.
Project Description: Funded from the 2003 Legislative Nickel Transportation Package, this project will construct an auxiliary truck lane westbound, grading, drainage, paving asphalt concrete pavement, planing asphalt concrete pavement, guardrail work, installing rumble strips, pavement markings, permanent signing, illumination system, installing structural earth walls, seeding, and other work.
Project Progress: Project work this week is approximately 82% complete having used 163 working days. It is anticipated that project work will be completed by late Fall of 2004, weather permitting.
Not sure where this was from though. My dad drove it a few weeks ago and said it was bad, and he was going towards Seattle. He said the other side was much worse.
For the person whe said they are glad they are staying at the Gorge, this won't matter for camping at most places, only getting to the area from Seattle or Portland.

About the traffic... yes, you have to realize that a ton of people go to Eastern Washington anyway for Labor Day weekend, even without the concert traffic to worry about. So plan accordingly on both Friday and Monday when you leave, especially those of you trying to catch flights.
EDIT: I went to school at WSU in Pullman in Eastern WA and I'd visit home (Seattle) for Labor Day weekend. Then I drove back to Eastern WA on Monday of Labor Day weekend. It was a "reverse commute" and I could see cars sitting still on I-90 backed up to Ellensburg at times trying to get back to Seattle.

If you are comming from Seattle there are ways around the construction. If you need help finding one just ask me but if you look at a map of Washington you can find out a way.

As it's thundering and pouring rain here in Seattle (we don't get thunder too often), here's the current weather forecast for Heaven's Amphitheatre:
Friday- partly cloudy, high 79, low 51, 0% chance of rain
Saturday- mostly sunny, high 84, low 55, 20% chance of rain
Sunday- partly cloudy, high 84, low 54, 20% chance of rain
Last year there was a "10% chance of rain" for the Thursday show and we actually did get a couple of light sprinkles. It was amusing.

And yes you can always get in for free if you hop the fence after dark(with the show being so late in the year you can probably get away with it before the show starts) or if you wait until they are done with like the fifth song they people at the gates don't care if you have a ticket or not.

the campsite at gorge is just tent city and there is really no place to get down to the river thats at all easy, as well as, the shade issue. however, walking around at night is pretty neat and as I said before I think I heard dave singing and playing from the stage area one night.

Don't even sweat it. At this point, it's a decent place to stay, within easy walking distance of the venue, it shouldn't be too hot this weekend, and you'll be able to chill/party/meet with thousands of DMB fans in one area. I have a quick question for those of you who have attended a DMB Gorge concert before:
What should I bring and what should I not bring? According to the little email announcement, they're being total hardasses, not allowing any backpacks, "containers", etc, etc... How much of this should I trust? We're in a "reserved" area, whatever that means. So.. lawn chairs? Nalgene bottles? Cameras?
Also, I'm just curious about little tips for a better time. I don't want to end up being the good girl who leaves everything at home, noyl to find that security is lax or whatever.
Ah, I'll be there for the 9/4 show. :D
Thanks!

I know you guys probably know this, but just in case you don't here goes. If you are driving to George from the west side of I-90 like I am you will find the traffic will be hell. There is massive construction going on and the freeway is down to one lane nearby Vantage. Just a heads up in case y'all need to leave a little earlier to get to the show on time. I'm driving up Saturday for the show and I'll stay over in Moses Lake for Sundays show. I myself am definitely leaving early since I have about a 6 hour drive. Hope to see everyone there safe, sane, and sound! :D
Do you have any better directions to avoid the mess? My hotel is in Yakima so I'll have to hit 90 West of George. If there are no alternate routes how much time do you think it'll take to get through the traffic? Thanks!

Dude, that is a a bummer. Now you're out solo like i was at SPAC. I'm sure you'll meet up w/ your crew at the campgrounds.
Looks like I won't be getting up to the campground till 10am on Friday. We had a friend back out too and so we're consolidating rides.
Dude. I got that Fire and Ice grill! Ya, i was impressed enough with yours that I had to get one. Its all ready to go! I'll cook you a burger and we can get hammered. Its going to be great.

ohh, I forgot, I will probably have extra tickets....night 1: row 7 , night 2: warehouse lawn, night 3: row 9

Thanks!
- Mel
bring your smiles. no worries, have fun at the parking lot, take it in. yeah gettin into the show is a different story. no open containers, etc. pretty much what says goes getting into the show.
the parking lot, now that's another story, as well as, the tents.

If the rental car company didn't overbook and give our car away by the time we get there then I will be making that sign for sure!!!

Damn! My buddy just told me (he works for ticketbastard) that he's going to the Seahawks game tonight and is sitting in the Ticketbastard suite with DMB!!! I guess most, if not all of the band, are gonna be there rooting on the Hawks vs. the Vikings! I'm not sure I believe it but had to pass it on for any of you who might be at the game - look for them!

It says on the DMB webiste that that Gorge's capacity is only 20,000. Is that right? It seems like it can hold a lot more. The pavilion itself looks huge, not to mention the size of the lawn.

That sounds about right......... The Gorge seemed kind of small to me. It's the lawn that is huge!

We'll all get there one way or another. These things are never as bad as they're made out to be. I went out there for a concert in early July and they had the one lane thing going, granted it wasn't also Labor Day weekend, but as long as everyone doesn't drive like morons, I don't think it will be that bad.

Yeah, our flight on Friday night has us arriving in Seattle at like 237 in the morning.........so we're going to head straight to the Gorge to avoid the whole traffic thing. It can't be too bad at like 4, 5 in the morning on Saturday. Of course You Never Know. ;) :D

Not much, The thing is that they reduce the speed limit to from 70 to 50, and a high volume of cars will bring it down even further. That's why they're saying the slowest times will be from 2pm on, because everyone is gonna be getting off work and hitting the road. I think if you get out of Seattle between noon-2pm it won't be that bad. But who knows?
