It's not bad--sound is pretty good; i've only ever been in the pavillion so i don't know how the lawn is...everyone will get wet if it rains

parking lots/traffic are much easier to deal with than they are at Riverport

Well, two years ago the show was pretty good, but last year (and I had better seats for that one, too), the show was really bad. Bad sound, horrid setlist, and bad crowd. Verizon is an average ampitheater, and depending on other factors, it can really suck. I've never been in the lawn, but it looks like a mess up there. I'm real glad I drove 8 hours through the night to see the Little Rock show the next day, 'cause that was about 100 times better (no electric guitar all night, great sound, awesome crowd, first time in Arkansas). But I'll be there at Verizon again. It's just too close to pass up.

Yeah, sandstone has been bad the last couple years crowd wise and energy wise, especially after coming home from alpine. Kind of a let down, but good if it's the only show you're going to.

I think I'm right w/ you here. Bonner is really bad for sound and the crowds there suck, esp. in the lawn as I've learned these past 2 years. But the LR show from last year blew KC out of the water. Like you said, everything was great about Little Rock! I can't believe they aren't coming back this year :( But I'm thinking UMB, Bonner, and Woodlands this year. Hopefully next year this festival is going to happen so I'll be there for that one.

It's gonna be a good summer though, just racking my brain about sitting through another sub par show in KC??

last years Bonner Springs was my only show so far. Yes it didn't quite live up to all the hype that other venues get it but nothin could ruin my fun on that day. Hopefully I'll get to do another venue this year. Not baggin on Bonner, but I've been there once. Time to do another one.

Boulevard really isnt too bad price-wise. About 5 bucks for a 6-pack and last time i was in KC it was like 10 bucks for a 12-pack. It's worth every penny though. I'm just hoping we park close to the army of nebraska cars again full of the cornhusker beauties.

I will never ever sit in the KC lawn again. It seemed as if they over-sold it last year. There everyone was crammed toward the front and if you left to go to the bathroom it took you forever to find your group because everything was mixed up. No one had anyone respect for other's space, I mean I understand that we're gonna have to get close in a situation like that, but don't just start bringing 40 people over to where we are because they are your friends and you reserved this spot. I can't even begin to tell you how many people were on cell phones and asking me what songs were or if I thought he was gonna play crash. Plus it was rediculous how many people were just wasted beyond belief. Don't get me wrong, I had some beers and was having a good time, but it just seemed unervingly obnoxious up there.

Now, I am not some concert elitist, I'm just sharing my experince from last year. I've sat in the lawn at many shows in my day, including Korn, Metallica, Cypress Hill, Beastie Boys, RATM; but have never seen such disrespect for other people trying to enjoy the show. I say all of this to say that, this is why some people may say the experince was OK. Face facts, sometimes our favorite band puts on a mediocore show (i think that sometimes it might have to do with the crowd), and you add all this other stuff on top of it and it creates a bad experience. I wasn't aware that the sound was bad, because I thought the sound was being drowned out by all the people talkling to me. Everyone toward the front appeard to be having a good time, so I will be doing my best to get reserved tickets this year.

in the end, this is one the closest shows to me, so there's no way I'm going to miss it, or let a couple drunk idiots ruin it for me. again, I'm just sharing my experience, because I wish someone would have warned me before I got lawn tickets last year.

I'll be going to 3 other shows this year, and unfortunately i expect this one to be the worst one. But you never know, Maybe because its on a monday, we might get less idiots.

just my $.02.

peace,
-=Gary

well considering that most of the big rides at WoF and OoF would be considered kiddie rides at the Six Flags I've been to (Atlanta, NJ, Chicago) and water parks (White Water Atlanta, Noah's Ark in Wisconsin). They're ok though, have fun.

Okay, not a bad show last year but a little slower than I was in the mood for. I'll never turn down Granny, Cry Freedon, or PFWYG, but after the Riverport show two nights before I wanted much more up beat selections. Jimi Thing was incredible last summer, I think we all can agree on that one. Anybody else have comments on last year's show/speculation for this year?

I went to Sandstone(refusing to call it verizon) in 02, and I was disappointed. Just saw two of the best at Alpine, and it was somewhat of a let down. I swore I'd never go back, but I'm ready to give it another chance. I'll be roadtripping from Des Moines on the day of the show, and making the return trip that night. The lawn did look like a total mess, plus the crowd was quite fickle. Ah well, as long as the neighbors are kind, it'll be alright. I'll be taking a first timer and she's sure to have a great time, so that'll help with my experience.

Question for the locals:
We approached from the south and they forced us to go past the main entrance and turn right to a parking entrance on the north side of the venue. It took us behind the stage to a lot that is actually south of the stage. Is it better to shoot for that lot directly or to enter at the main gate? If so, what are the best directions to each?

AGREE!! I am ready for the parking lot party - at KC. Last year, my hubby and I sipped a couple of drinks before hand - but the price of those drinks, damn!! I will make it to StL if i have to leave the hubby behind - i am not missing opening night. What's with ticketmaster only letting you buy 2 lower resereve tickets. I think it is kind of shitty. I understand that they have to set some kind of limit, but 2, i mean come on. Three of us are going and had to settle middle of the pack section 11 row O, and those were bought right at 10:00 a.m..

I scored some Sec. 2 Row Z Seats 1-2 (closest seats to the center in this section) I believe it's like 22nd or 23rd row. I was able to score these about 20 min. after they went on sale. I was VERY happy. :D

Now I can't say the same for the STL show which I was unable to get any good seats, or seats at all for that matter. :(

Get there EARLY, try to avoid the I-435/I-70 rush hour mess. Then you should have plenty of time to enjoy some Boulevard Wheat in the lot before the show starts.

katedid81
04-06-2004, 07:01 PM
hmmm, getting there from the downtown KC I take I-35 north to I-670 W (turns into I-70) and then either get on 7 or State; I got there early and it only took about 15-20 minutes

If you want to avoid doing that loop around to the parking lot you will have to get off the highway sooner(and this will depend where are you are staying) but I'd be glad to help anyone figure out an alternate route

edit: shit, I just realized the show is on a monday...yeah, traffic= bitch

EatSleepJeep
04-06-2004, 08:18 PM
I'll be coming down I-435 from the north(from Des Moines)

Is it better to exit on 24 and take that around the north side of the speedway and enter the north lot?

Should I take I-70 and exit on 7 and take it to the main entrance?
Which is better from a traffic standpoint?

Last year for the DMB and Pearl Jam shows this is the way I went. I didn't run into too much traffic either time but I was really early.

However I did end up in one lot and some chick I was meeting ;) was in the other lot so I took a little treck around on foot because I wasn't paying parking twice.

oops.

I think the only way the traffic will be terrible early is if there is something going on at the speedway

K-7 is the route pretty much everyone uses, if you're gonna be getting in around rush hour I'd do 24 if I were you, unless you're gonna be there early, when you should be able to do either route without any problems.

a lovely evening

roadwise I would familiarize myself with a map and wing it; but that is just me. I agree with Joey though; I'd hit 24 (State) before I'd hit K-7 if it's more rush hour time. I still advise the EARLY route though :)

Same here!! So, if you aren't disappointed, I won't be either. Could be better but at least no one's head can block my view - right?? It's stadium-like seating right - at least more so than the lower pavilion. (Fuzzy memory of 99 show.)

Well, I just moved to Lawrence from CT last fall. I was good for the 2 Hartford shows plus the occasional NYC show (and the D&T opener in Wallingford last year) and I've been going steady since 96. So I've seen some really good shows (I thought I was cool for going to the first NYC show in 12/02, but then James Brown went and played the next night :( ).

Because I have to work like crazy (not much vacation in new job), I only get to go to this show this year. I got really good seats (row 2 in section 2--go go Warehouse seniority), so I'm not TOO worried about the fans being bad, but I am worried about the sound. Does the sound really suck that bad?

It does seem like a long way away though...to pass the time, I'm going to check out Guster, Ben Folds and Gavin DeGraw at City Market on 7/17...$20! Can't beat it!

The sound should be fine where you will be; besides, when you are that close the sound is always different than if you were towards the back. alright, answers to all questions-
1. what's the scoop on seats?
they begin from the center. i.e. seats 3&4 in section 3 are on your right if you're going down the center aisle. seats 3&4 in section 4 are on your left if you're going down the center aisle.
2. what's the best way to get there from the south?
i personally used to take k-7 up to the gates, but that was before premier parking. so now, and this is actually faster regardless of where you're sitting, take 435 north to state ave (US 40) and go west. they'll either point you in the direction of the reserved seating parking (the paved parking off of state ave) or send you south to the lawn parking (gravel parking off of 130th)
3. verizon? sandstone? what's in a name?
same venue, different name. corporations need money nowadays, take the sprint center for example.

any other questions feel free to im me at jdunndmb or email at jdunn41@comcast.net. oh, and if you're the one in charge of the boulevard keg, definitely get in touch with me. i live in olathe and plan on smoking some ribs before the show. heh, if that keg somehow makes its way on to my back deck i'd be forever indebted (and you can have any show you want from my collection, over 100 shows, or whatever, just holla).

a keg of boulevard really isnt hard to find, and if you ware worried about it, just order it ahead of time so they have notice that you need one. just about any liquor store in kansas can order it for you. also dont forget that anyplace other than a liquor store in kansas is required to sell 3.2 beer. go to a liquor store if you want 5.0 or more (bud ice, keystone ice, whatever). just a notice for all of you coming from out of town for the show.

I'll be at Sandstone. It'll be my 5th show. I hear alot of people complaining about the crowd, instead of complaining let's all make sure that we are a kick ass crowd this year. I'm getting married in 3 days and will then spend a week in Jamaica and top off the honeymoon by seeing the DMB in KC, can't ask for a better couple of weeks:)
I'll be bringing my energy, and a newbie who'll be seeing her first 3 shows all in a row. Alpine, Alpine, Sandstone.

I know that this is a common question that most of time people can't answer, but what the hell:

From anyone that's been to Sandstone, do you know what direction the seating numbers increase for a certain section? For example, if my seats are numbers 1 and 2 in section 2, are they closer to center or closer to the side? Here's a link to the seating map if that helps---> http://www.mmginteractive.com/verizon/seating.cfm#

My guess is that the seat numbers increase in the same direction as the section numbers. So all seats increase left to right. Anyone know for sure?

i have been there a million times but never seem to remember. i did however see a seating chard about a week ago at a ticket brokers store and it said that seat #1 in a row is the closest to center. i will attempt to diagram below:

3 2 1 5 4 3 2 1 1 2 3 4 5 1 2 3
2 1 5 4 3 2 1 1 2 3 4 5 1 2
1 5 4 3 2 1 1 2 3 4 5 1
STAGE
does that answer your question??? hopefully my diagram helped.

damnit, i forget that it takes out all the spaces to the left of the text. lemme see if i can find a link to the seating chart with numbers. i know it exists. ok, here we go:

http://www.ticketvision.com/seatingcharts/ks-sandstone%20amp.gif

there are tiny numbers on there to show you how the seats go. so if you have section 3 row a seat 1, you are essentially dead center. if you have section 3 row a seat 23, you are on stefan and leroi's side of the stage. hopet that helps.

You know Matt I would...but I really don't want to give Kerry money. I'd rather give money do DMB. I'm not gonna vote for Kerry so I don't think I should support him. And...I really don't agree with celebs/bands using their status to draw voters from their fan base. I don't think that's right. I know I'm going to be missing my fave band but, I just don't agree with what DMB is doing. And plus what...they're gonna play 5 songs...max?

Does anyone know if section 5 row e seat 5 would have any obstruction problems???? It looks like it might. Also, does anyone know if this venue lets the first couple rows up front?? I think they call it a soft-opening...

Also, how strict is the security here? Do they care about much, or are they really strict?

as far as i have ever heard, there is not "soft opening" up front. row 1 is the only row of people that are right up front.

Row E is the first row in section 5, so you shouldn't have any problems. They don't let anyone up front except for the front row. They usually have a ticket check to get into the lower tier, then one to get into your section, then one about half way down, and one a few rows from the front.

I'll be in section 5 row Q :)
