I think they're still on Jimi Thing. CE came on the Road Page about 6:55, and to be able to fit 17 songs by 10:10, they'd have to have come on much earlier than usual.

07-30-2004, 02:40 AM
Just got back to Orlando from Tampa. Wow what a show! 4th row center! The night started off with Dave introducing one of his "heroes" which he thought it should be the other way around with Lanois playing after the band. It was great seeing Dave off to the side and watching Lanois the whole time and then Carter came by later to watch it with Dave. Dave then joined Lanois at the end of his set for a great The Maker! Dave even took an electric and played along with him.
Whoooo Go Brazil!! Carter and Butch had their Brazil soccer jersey's on tonight that the Brazilian fan club sent them! It was so awesome!
The highlights of the main set included #41, a crazy ass Hello Again which is developing into one sick monster and 2 broken strings number 1. Too Much is becoming extremely crazy and and Dave broke another string and had to switch guitars in the middle of the song which provided more jammed outness by the band. The crazy beast of the night was Jimi Thing. Download this version when you get a chance! 20+ Minutes!!! I know everyone says it about all of the other ones this tour but this one is crazy as hell. It started usually with the initial solos and then went into Dave's solo and then scatting. Well the scatting just kept leading to more and more scatting and he eventually started scatting introductions of the whole band. At that point each band member took another solo, even Mr. "20 years ago when the planets aligned and made" Carter Beauford hahah! Then after the solos at the end they went into the usual ending and the For What Its Worth outro. Great way to end the set! The encore was awesome, very interesting song choice but it really pumped up the crowd and I was happy with them.
All in all a great show! See everyone in WPB this weekend!

That was the best show I've seen. #41 & Encore : Crush....wow. Anybody notice the 6 crazy Indian people right behind the "warehouse preferred seating " ? I was in that, last night was one of the best nights of my life, I've lost my voice somewhere through DDTW....but still managed to hammer out some more screams during well, EVERYTHING after DDTW.

Last night was certainly a good show. Me and a group of friends got there around 3:15, only to find that the gates to the parking lot opened at 4:00. There were already a number of cars lined up on the side of the road (probably around 25). I pulled over and we waited for a tiny Chinese woman to make her way to the gate, fiddling with some keys.
I wasn't expecting this, but when she finally unlocked the gate and pulled open the doors, it was madness. By 4:00 about 60-70 cars were waiting outside and all of them wanted to be first inside. It was ridiculous. If everyone would have acted civilized and practiced even a minimal amount of logic, everyone would have been in a parking space in a fraction of the time it actually took. But then I remembered, this is a Dave Matthews Band concert and rationale will be neglected, even three hours before the show. In any event, some fraternity kids eventually realized that seven cars next to each other cannot fit through a gate designed to allow two cars. The posted speed limit was 15 mph on the drive to the parking lot and quite frankly, driving this slow would have been suicide. Anyway, after avoiding several dozen accidents, we made it to a parking space.
Upon getting out of my car, I heard the tail end of soundcheck. I think Carter and LeRoi were the only ones on stage at that particular time as all I heard were their respectable instruments. Carter's drum beats were reminiscent of Halloween and LeRoi seemed to be teasing Say Goodbye. It was probably just wishful thinking and they were likely just sporting some filagry.
The calibur of security and parking personnel at the Ford Amphitheater is absolutely incredible. The hiring process must have consisted of the following screening:
Hello, thank you for your interest in working at the Ford Amphitheater. Do you know how to breathe?
Yes.
Congratulations, you start on Thursday.
I believe this concert was the fourth or fifth concert to be held at this venue. The workers attempting to direct parking were far from veterans and to watch them work was early entertainment. They would have long arguments, quite heated, across the lot. They were yelling at the top of their lungs at cars, at each other... at birds flying overhead. They were losing their minds in practicing this fine science of parking.
The venue opened at 5:30 and we were there at 4:00, so we had some time to kill in the lot. I had a quilt and some drinks so we went underneath some trees to relax before we could go to our seats. Now, here's a quick lesson on Florida's meteorology: a typical day starts around 130 degrees. It rains around noon, cooling things off to about 110 degrees. Then the humidity rises to a point where visibility is drastically hindered and the temperature peaks around 2:00 at a miserable 185 degrees. Then it pours for about an hour, cooling things off to about 150 degrees for the remainder of the evening until nightfall, where you will be slowly digested by mosquitos as your balls slowly drip with persperation. More rain is always a possibility. Gotta love the Sunshine State. Anyway, yesterday was a typical day, following the latter pattern. It had poured about an hour earlier and the lot was scattered with puddles. As more and more cars were pulling in, the more insane the lot attendants became. One particular fellow who looked strikingly similar to the actor who played Joey Gladstone from Full House was screaming at us to move so that cars could park underneath the tree. This would have been completely understandable if there was a line actually forming in the row that the tree in question was in. We had planned on moving when cars threatened to run us over. Anyhow, we said "Ok, we'll move," and decided to finish our drinks, deducing he meant to keep an eye out for when cars would actually be within 100 yards of us. Well, this guy wasn't satisfied and became belligerent. When he noticed we were still there about two minutes later, he came running towards us, steaming. Just as he was about to open his mouth to offer us some obscenities, he slipped in a puddle and hit the deck. Then, we moved.
5:30 rolled around and we made our way to will call, where our tickets were waiting. We got in line to the venue entrance and more rain came. It was quite welcome as we were already drenched in sweat. It only rained for about ten minutes. We were finally inside the amphitheater around 5:45. I met with some more friends who had lawn seats and hung out on the lawn until about 6:45, when it started raining again. I went back to my seats (which were pretty decent) and fifteen minutes later, Dave came out to introduce Daniel Lanois and his band.
Said Dave, "Hello, this is truly one of the greatest moments of my life. A big part of me wishes this was the other way around. Anyway, this next performer is one of my biggest heroes. Please welcome to the stage Daniel Lanois."
Daniel Lanois and his band, Mother Superior, were very impresive. Dave stood on the side of the stage (later joined by Carter) and watched the entire set (until he was later called out by Lanois). Dave was really into it. Lanois is a much better guitarist than I remember hearing in the past. His voice was flawless and if the band missed any notes, it wasn't noticed by anyone but them. They played four solid songs and then magic occured. Lanois said, "This next song has something in common with both Jerry Garcia and Dave Matthews in that they both covered it. Maybe Dave would like to come out and join me for this one." Dave appeared to be incredibly honored. He slowly walked out onto the stage and joined Lanois at the microphone as they went into The Maker. I got chills in Florida - that says something. Dave was given a guitar about half way through and he actually played some lead for a bit. It was truly a great moment, especially the outro: "Oh river rise..."
At 8:17, the Dave Matthews Band took the stage. It wasn't long before Dave was softly playing the intro to One Sweet World, no extended intro. It gradually got louder as all the band members came in - it was a great start to the concert as it really gave it a "here we go" feel.
Dave was then given the 12-string and I was really hoping for Bartender but got Grey Street. It was pretty standard, still no third verse. The band was tight and afterwards Dave and Carter were just cracking up about something. I'd love to hear an IEM.
Joy Ride was next. I really like this song and I'm looking forward to how they decide to perform it in the studio. One thing the new songs have in common is that Dave really explores his range and does so brilliantly.
Then came Don't Drink the Water, which was actually my favorite song of the night. It was flawless. Passionately aggressive. I loved it.
Just when I was thinking about how well this set was developing, #41. Absolutely phenomenal, as always.
When the World Ends was decent. Unlike many, my mind process does not go like this: Oh cool, I like this one, oh wait, isn't this on Everyday? Ah geez, why are they playing this? I hate it.
"I got a sister named Jane this is the Song That Jane Likes." Very tight and it really seemed like the band was having a great time.
Hello Again was a highlight. The last 3 or 4 minutes were amazing as Dave just went off, singing at the top of his lungs for a couple minutes. It was heavenly. It was awkward to see everyone sitting down while this went occured. Whatever works.
Next came Sugar Will and it really killed the crowd. One reason being that it's not a very upbeat song and two, it followed another new song. A lot of people looked just bored. Not a bad song, though; it's been interesting to watch this develop. With time I think it could be one of their finest.
The crowd was filled with energy once again with the opening riff to So Much to Say. Awesome performance and the energy increased further as they took it into Anyone Seen the Bridge. Fonzie was jumping up and down and the crowd followed suit. Too Much rocked the house and it was probably when the venue felt most alive. Dave busted some strings before the last verse. The crowd sung the entire third verse as Dave was given a new guitar and then took his turn in singing the third verse. He was dropping F-bombs left and right during Too Much.
Next, WAYG, which I first thought was Grace Is Gone, perhaps my favorite song, so I was rather disappointed. I enjoyed it, though. Not much you can do with WAYG.
Rhyme and Reason was the best version I've ever heard. Some songs just take you in from the first to the last beat. This one did it for me.
Crazy Easy might be my favorite of the new songs. Dave's voice seems to be most passionate during this one. I can't wait to hear the new album.
They closed the set with a 20+ minute Jimi Thing. It was something to see. I've never seen Dave act crazier. It was Central Park squared. His falsetto was way off during the scatting so he just decided to go with the low voice for a while before he started to argue with himself about having wine for breakfast. I didn't make out more than half of what he said, but here's what I did hear (probably not exact):
"I don't even know what I'm doing here."
"Ice cream and cereal? Have you lost your mind?"
"Wine now? Now you're going to have wine? You know you shouldn't have taken that last shot."
"You gotta know how to play to be on stage." (The crowd loved this one)
Then he introduced the band. Carter's introduction was particularly interesting: "About 20 years ago, the planets all aligned and the greatest man on earth was formed, Mr. Carter Beauford." After each introduction, the member did a 10-15 second solo. Then they went into the chorus of For What It's Worth. Dave sung the chorus 3 times, let the crowd sing it 4 times, and sung along for a final 8th chorus.
"Thank you very much, goodnight."
About ten minutes later, they came back for the encore. Stefan had a bass intro that lasted about 2 minutes before Crush. I thought it might be Watchtower, but I was happy to hear Crush as well. It was very long. That song is a masterpiece.
Then, to close out the night, I couldn't have hand-picked a better song. The Stone has always been one of my favorite songs and when I heard the intricate opening riff, I couldn't believe it. It was the perfect end to the night. They softly played the outro to a stop and then jammed out the end. It was phenomenal.
Steak and Shake on the way home was good, too. Try their BBQ & Bacon Steakburger. Even if you're a vegetarian. You won't go back, hippie.

Uh, but yeah security at the venue was horrible, there were two empty seats in front of us, Section 105 represent!, and halfway through some guard comes over and asks if anyone is sitting in them, then leaves, and comes back with two random TALL people who stand in the seats the rest of the show. Not cool in my book.
Also, people kept going up to the railing and standing and the guards would make them leave, but then like 3/4 through they brought folding chairs UP TO THE RAILING AND LET THE PEOPLE RANDOMLY STANDING THERE SIT IN THE FOLDING SEATS. Thus COMPLETELY blocking my view until I moved around (I was like 22nd row counting ORCH and the two rows in front of me). I'm really pissed that random people got to stand in front of me, and it was ONE PERSON it was about 15 people total.
The show was awesome. I really liked 41 and Jimi was totally off the wall, and I tried very very very very hard to get into the new songs, but I could only enjoy Joy Ride and the jam at the end of one song....the only reason i liked the jam was because Dave was moving his feet in this particularly awesome way.
Didn't like Crush as an encore.
Did not enjoy WAYG for the 3rd time.
WTWE isn't too bad for the 3rd time.
People who talk the whole time and are in front of you suck. Truly.
People who do not enjoy the concert and spend the whole time complaining suck too.
I miss the OSW intro, but the newer one is really good.
Jimi closer is a good idea. I was truly jamming out to that one.
DDTW midset is much better than opener.
Ummm, it was really fun. The new songs really made people bolt to the bathroom.
Sugar Will is NOT cool IMO. The others are good.

I'm finally getting back to Ants... I got back into town around 2PM, then went right to work until midnight. I really should be asleep, but oh well.
I backread a bit in the thread, saw that Stay was originally in the setlist. IMO, it wasn't missed. As everyone else said, Jimi Thing was just amazing. I saw it at SPAC when Dickey Betts and Great Southern guested for about an 18 minute jam, and that was great. I think this beats it. Hello Again was great with the jamming -- even with Dave breaking a string. #41 was sweet. It was a great show.
On the venue - traffic sucked. Getting into the lot wasn't too bad, once we were there. Security was practically non-existant for me - I think I could have brought my digital camera in with no problem - they barely even looked at me. At SPAC they feel my pockets, and ask me 20 questions about what's inside. We missed the start of Daniel Lanois' set, but did see Dave play with them on The Maker.
Overall... just an amazing show. I wish I had been able to meet up with some Ants beforehand, and I wish I was at WPB this weekend!

I like Ledee, but I'm fine with trading a bench player for a decent reliever. We have a bunch of AAA guys in the bullpen right now.
