maybe tonight they actually did have an intro worth noting. Seriously though, the intros need to stop. Last year it was the segues that didn't exist ala crash into me-->wtwe, there's like a 15 second gap.

they don't have a big enough song catalog to do that as well as have a full set that varies a bit. it's impossible to keep everyone happy. the answer to your question is: if you don't want to see the same songs a bunch of times... don't go to tons of shows. simple as that.

another broken string tonight... just one this time. dave looked pisssssed for a minute or two after it happened, but seemed to lighten up a bit after that.

just got home, i thought it was a killer set, not a bad song in the bunch. they played everyhting I wanted to hear and the new stuff wasn't bad. I thought "Hello again" was awsome and everyone was in to it. It was the best set i have ever heard them play. Dave screwed up a couple times on vocals and on the guitar but nothing to really worry about. I cant wait to download the show!!!!!

Just got in and wow, what a show. Easily the best I have seen this year, very possiby the best I have ever seen and I am not one of those people who say that after every show (see what I said about last years Meadows shows...). The band was on fire and it seems like thye played for ever (very long set) although Recently was shortened and so was Grace (no hoedown), not sure why, perhaps to fit all the songs in before 11:00. If this show had one down point it was WTWE, everything else was killer. Hello Again is just amazing. Many teases as well, one was with lyrics and one was just a jam type with Dave and Carter. Great, great show. There are more new ones to come, I am sure of it.

they can play whatever they damn well choose to play. just because they have 100 songs in their catalog doesn't mean they need to play them all.
i think this year they aren't focusing as much on the "let's pull out every rare song" and they are working more on honing down the new songs and focusing on them.
plus, i believe someone in the band in some interview(that sounds vague, i know) said they would take it slowly.
granted, last year we did get last stop, dreaming tree, spoon, etc. and i thought they were great, but a lot of hardcore fans, perhaps like yourself, thought that they were very sloppy versions of the songs.

I went, 14th row..and it was lame.
Boyd was virtually invisible the whole show, stayed back by the drum set..
No band vibe going... setlist was lame, no nancies, no watchtower, no Back you up, ..
crowd tailgating scene was lame...
I'm sooo disapointed and I've been seeing these guys since 1994.
I wish I went to the first night..
Last two tours, I 've missed the best show by one date (last year it was the second show of the stand so this year I purposefully picked night #2...)
I guess I'm especially picky being a PJ fan as well, they mix up their setlists every night (and provide downloads of each show to purchase)..

Wooo. These were two incredible nights. 8 hours of sleep later andddd... the review!
Too Much - First full band for me. Nothing entirely special, but it caught me off guard, the way everyone was shuffling around the stage I called for DDTW. Nice way to get everyone into it.
Granny - Vocal line went all over the place here. Very cool version, though it doesn't change at all.
Pig - Highlight #1 for me. Boyd seemed fine, and being so close (;)) I could tell. They really get into that ending.
Sugar Will - My eyes were just kind of darting around at this point, because as I said about last night this is long, and until Roi's solo really takes off it's really just a quiet groove.
Bartender - Any Bartender is a good one. Dave was losing his mind during the wailing part, the whole crowd had a lengthy applause for that entire segment. I drifted a little during Butch's solo but it was cool when I was listening, and of course the pennywhistle, always good.
WTWE - My friend used it as a piss break (his second show ever, and his first was last night. I don't know.) and I just kind of absorbed. Wasn't surprised really, but it didn't kill me like IDI night 1.
Drive In Drive Out - Whooooo. I was hoping for this one. "I'll just make up a new God, and have a Boston Tea Party of my own..." So awesome.
Crazy-Easy - Eh. It's alright. I wouldn't be sad at all if I didn't see this again.
Grace - My friend was wondering what the Lap Steel was going into and I just kind of chuckled to myself. Very awesome intro though, the camera got a really close up shot of the guitar and Stefan really played it up for a minute or two. This was not a good version of Grace, I was looking forward to a jammed out Hoedown outro, but it ended after like 6 minutes. Roi and Boyd took solos and that was all.
Recently - Huge letdown. I was going nuts for this when I heard the first chord, and expecting to hear Pretty Pretty Girl and Take Me To The River. I got nervous when they slowed it down and sure enough, that clocked in at a monster 3 minute something. It was cool while it lasted.
Grey Street - My friend shit himself, and as I sang the third verse to myself I was really surprised at the second half of the song. This really brought the crowd alive, I could feel it. I have a feeling this one will follow me around in the upcoming tours. Well done and I was happy to hear it.
New Song tease - Now it was my turn to soil my pants and listen to wtf he was singing. If it was just an intro to Hello Again, then cool, but I could've sworn that was a little too structure with different chords and stuff to not be another song. I really hoped they'd play something brand new and maybe kick one of the other new ones out of the rotation, but oh well.
Hello Again - Awesomeness. No complaints hearing this twice. Carter's solo again had that Say Goodbye vibe to it.
Intro? - It was the snare. Unless I'm forgetting another new song tease.
Ants - Caught me entirely by surprise knowing we were still a good 5 songs from the encore. Naturally this is always a great moment. We were soooo loud during the last verse. I might've ended up on the mic of the taper in Section 3 a couple times. Standard Ants, but the jam is just so fun and amazing that it doesn't matter.
Cry Freedom - Shit pants moment #3 for me. The crowd generally kept it down and there was no clapping or whooing the whole time. Lots of lighters, and Boyd and Roi really made their solos beautiful. So amazing, I'm so happy to have seen it. Highlight #2.
Joy Ride - This one got met with indifference from the crowd. It was fun, but this wasn't the placement I wanted. Oh well.
Everyday - Well, I had this pegged as closer. The hani hanis went on forevvvver ala Vegas 2001 and Folsom Field. The band jumped back in for a couple measures of 36, and I figured that'd be it and we'd get either SMTS/Rapunzel or something and Stay to end.
Stay - Then Dave hits the opening Stay riff right away, that was awesome. Naturally solid version like they've been playing. The jam was just in your face loud at this point, and everyone was right on.
---
SMTS - I knew it was coming, but it was my friend's second show and I had never heard it before so I wasn't going anywhere. You know the drill, nothing changes here. Still great.
ASTB - THIS was fuckin' cool. Highlight #4 for me. Stefan went into his solo, and he was looking into my section. I started jumping in place because fuck, it's ASTB, jump. I could've sworn he was watching me, or someone very close to me because I started jumping higher, he started jumping higher. I swear I am not imagining this. It wasn't an extended solo but he was just feeling some sort of vibe at that point.
PNP - It's short and to the point. This is the only song I'd ever say I wanted to hear just for stats. ;) No, because once this is up you know what's coming...
Rapunzel - Awesome. The jam at the end, Fenton pulled out the stops on the lights and just let them run until the end. Such a fun song, highlight #5 for me.
Overall, this was a solid two nights of musicianship. Not very many songs that, alone, were entirely rare, and there were no real "holy shit!" moments maybe besides Cry Freedom and BOWA, stuff like that. I'm so happy I saw both shows and I got to see some of the more common stuff. I am however a little disappointed in no debuts. 2 days before and after this run and there's nothing new to show for it. I would've taken anything new that I wasn't expecting. Except Watchtower, I'd take this encore over that.
Overall, it was solid. And I can't wait to do it all again this summer. Or winter tour somewhere else. Or something like that.

Ok, I have the definitive answer why people defend shows so strongly when people say the band had a sucky night. Subconciously or otherwise. People want a show they were at to be revered by everyone. No one wants to hear the show they were at sucked. So just take it in stride.

That is not entirely true. The two Meadows shows I went to last year both sucked.
I really don't want to get into this fight but I can't understand how someone could say a show with Granny, Bartendar, Pig, Grey Street, Recently (although shortened), DIDO, Grace is Gone, full mid set Ants, and Cry Freedom is bad. If the band messed them up than maybe but that didn't happen (except maybe Recently). I also think the enore was one of the better ones I have seen (third or fourth on the list). Maybe I just like these songs more than other people here or perhaps it is because there were some new songs that I hadn't heard on this tour yet that they played. I really liked this show. One thing I learned last year was to never go to two back to back two night stands-it will only lead to dissappointment. This tour and for all future ones I am going to space my shows out as much as possible.
If people didn't like this show then fine, that is their/your opinion, it just really surprises me.

Almost everyone I know hates GIG. And while the encore wasn't bad, most people there knew exactly what it was going to be from the moment the set ended, which kind of eliminates the point I think. I would rather them have just played it right after Stay (which BTW, if I have to hear close one more set or encore will throw myself down the lawn or aisle in disgust.)
The Watchtower tease before the encore did not help matters much with those already disappointed by the set.

I have a conclusion, lets all agree to disagree on the shows. I thought night one was better then night 2, but overall enjoyed every minute of both shows. The only comment I will make is that I really don't agree when people say that Boyd was out of tune, or Dave messed up. Realize people that these guys are only human, it happens. Plus the whole out of tune thing, night one was very humid, and night 2 was hot as hell, those weather conditions make it very hard to keep a instrument in tune. Dave must have broke my god 6 or 7 strings during night one. For me the only song I thought really didnt sound as good as I heard it before was "I did it". It took Dave a couple bars to get on track, plus I thought that the sound system was to loud for this song. Thats my opinion though, and I welcome everybody else's. Jimi Thing Scat was funny as hell. "My Milkshake is better then yours". :-) lol

first---thank you for choosing donkey.
second---i was a little extreme-defensive, wasn't i. i just thought lame was kind-of an exageration. maybe boyd was out of tune, or maybe, as you say-he didn't really play at all-which is hard to believe. but i just tend to look for more reasons than that, and no nancies, or back you up to make a show totally lame.

And while the encore wasn't bad, most people there knew exactly what it was going to be from the moment the set ended, which kind of eliminates the point I think.
Personally i doubt "most" people knew what songs were coming for the encore if i had to place money on it i'd bet that less than 1/2 the people there dont follow the set lists show to show and have no idea what they've been playing for the first 12 or so shows.
I went to both shows and they were both tons of fun for me and everyone i was with. They played different songs every night with the exception of the new songs. And some of the jams were awesome.
I'm sorry that you're psychic abilities ruined the show for you. I had an idea that the encore was coming but it was still awesome to hear it.

Side note: Yes, I thought lame was harsh. We've all got our opinions though.
And yeah, the second I heard the first note of Stay I knew the encore. That didn't deter from it at all, that was fucking amazing. Maybe I need to go to more shows so I can be all jaded and cool like everyone else.

I have been to 28 shows and I loved the encore, matter of fact I have had a great time at every show I have been to. :o

You know what I think. Freakin Grey Street was like really really off the hook. I was there and it waas my thirdd show of this tour and I had never heard that song played better. Hello Again looks like its gonna potentially be daves new number one hit. And and we got to hear ants with a sick intro besides the fact that we heard WTWE and DIDO no complaints here except for Stay why does he keep ending sets with that. He ended his best concert ever , ( central park) with stay and he wont stop with ending wiht it. That I cant deal with . But besides that it was a great show

i thought the shows were great but now that i get home, i listen to things like a typical situation from 1992, and i realize that this band has, in fact, had its heyday. they don't jam anymore, and what they're doing to recently is just frustrating. cutting a famous jam song to 3 minutes, it's horrible. yes, he did tease watchtower, by the way. i heard it very clearly.

They change songs around to make them not jam anymore, but in turn, songs like Sugar Will, that have been played just over a dozen times, are already pushing 14 minutes with a long and sometimes ambient jam. They shortened a Grey Street verse but added more to the end. Grace Is Gone is also pushing the 13-14 minute mark (not in Mansfield, but that, like Recently, was a one night thing I hope.) Typical still jams, when it's played. They still have the chops to go longer. They've been tightening songs up for a while now, I hope what Stefan said about the band going back to the grassroots style is true.

yes but when jimi is played it turns into a freakin monster usually close to 20 min (mansfield 19.28) and I'm listening to two step from 7/11 (on flac sweet) it is 23 min and change there making things different that is for sure. No watchtower and he did tease that @ mansfield i said it then it looked like i crashed and burned! heard they had to do some work on editing for 7/7 one of the sources mic stands got grabbed and walked off with (drunk idiot) during a song sucks just have to be patient plus have 7/10 and 7/11 already and they have two step!! Wish i could go to a different venue than boring Mansfield! :( Bill

Went to both shows (and going to both at hartford), the first night was amazing, the band was right on and the jams were sweet. Milkshake ... need I say more. The second night seemed quite different, Carter was off, i've read some reports that his hand was bothering him ... but the show still was sweet. Loved Dave and Boyd signing backup to the crowd for Everyday. C-ya all in Hartford

Yes, and it's always been a bad thing when it's short. I think it was cut because of Carter's wrist hurting him.
By the by, I'm suprised to see so many people complaining about the second night. I thought it was very good (#27 for me).

it was prolly just dave fooling around w/ his guitar but i could have sworn i heard Watchtower just before so much to say... did anyone else hear that or was it just me?
It was only like three notes or so so i doubt it was intentional
yeah. I heard the same thing. I Screamed my head off, then Flipped off the band for fucking with me.

Well it's been quite a lot longer than two weeks. Still no show up? I heard one taper got his gear snatched by some drunk retard...but what about the others? I'm dying to get a hold of this show! Please tell me it hasn't been lost forever!

ugh. Nope, no word. And asking about it causes everyone to get up in arms even though the deadline is past by nearly a week now. I know I saw a decent amount of rigs there, one drunk guy stealing one wouldn't cause this much ofa delay. I only hope it won't be as long as the Molson show last year.

Well, hold on now, it's early, I'm sleepy and pissed that my school only got a one hour delay. On further inspection, there's a gaping hole between Camden (7/5-7/6) and Tampa (7/14). They usually don't do moves like that, Camden usually comes after MA and SPAC is generally before it. But if these are really all confirmed, I can't see any other stretch of time that isn't impractical besides 7-8/7-9.
