Just wanted to know who is going to Phoenix this year. I am most likely going by myself this year :( and want to maybe get together with some people for some pre-show festivities.

I'll probably be there. Heading west from FL to visit relatives in SD and Phoenix, and going to the shows in both places.

I am going to Gorge and am starting to consider driving. Email me when you get some more details. jenmwest81@yahoo.com

Thanks to Rob D. I got some kick ass seats and will be there like every year. Who wants to do some day drinking before the show?

YAY!! Yeah Leanne is going with me and so are our friends Jacquelin & Jacob. There are more going but they haven't gotten their tix yet so I am not counting on them. Will you bring your guitar? I can't take the day off work because I am already taking 6 days off this summer for Gorge and Alpine.

OK guys I need your help (I also poste this in the ticket forum):

One of my best friends got tickets throught Ticketmaster for this show the day they went on sale...however she gave them her home address, which was different from her billing address. Apparently this caused her credit card not to process. Ticketmaster emailed her, but by the time she read her emails (three days later) they notified her they had assumed she had given up the tickets so they were resold She called me CRYING. I already have great seats this year and am hoping to track down some of the same for her. PLEASE let me know if you have extras that she can purchase. Again it's TWO seats, any price. Thank you!!!

OK I need to see anyone can help:

I have tickets that someone else requested for me through the WH, but they are being will called and the person whose name they are under lives in North Carolina so obviosly they won't be able to pick them up for me. But the WH is willing to transfer the tickets to another WH member who DOESN'T already have their own WH tix for his show. Is anyone going or have a friend who is going that would be willing to have these tix transferred into their name and we can then meet up at the show and pick them up? The tix are already paid for so there are no issues there and I will make sure to buy you some beers :) PLEASE let me know and I will be forever grateful!

That's awesome, I'm also in 202 EE. What seats do you have? I'll be in seat 37. Big rows out there at Cricket.

I was going to go to this show with a friend of mine, but ended up she's going with a family member. I don't know if I'll be hooking up with them that night or not. Maybe depends on where they're sitting. Anyway. I'm definitely down for a pre-show get together. I'm not planning on taking the day off, but I should still be at the venue by 5 or 5:30.

We'll have to shore up some plans as the date draws closer.

PS
Any Phoenix residents going out to the Cali shows? I really want to go out to the shows in LA and maybe even San Diego, depending on my work situation. It'd be nice to have some people to hang out with out there.

:lol
That's a story I both do and don't want to hear ...

Anyway, Crush isn't out of the question, we did get it here in Phoenix last year.

I'm hoping for a big comeback this year for Say Goodbye. Definitely would like to hear that one at Cricket.

So I'm intensely bored at work today and I just completed dream setlists for the 5 shows that I (might be) attending. I thoiught back to how unique last year's Phoenix setlist was and how well it fit with the hot hot evening. Since chances are it will be hot again this year, I went with another setlist full of slower songs. More sexy slow songs, though. Lover Lay Down, rush, Say Bye. Don't ask me why, I just think it would be awesome to have a show that was basically a long expression of lust. ;)

JanelleM
06-04-2004, 03:59 PM
Yeah Crush was played last year and it was awesome. I am hoping for new stuff first and foremost! But also pulling for Say Goodbye, I'll Back You Up (I can dream can't I?), Tripping Billies, Lie in Our Graves...some new covers would also be great.

It would be nice to have Lie In Our Graves back this summer. Though without Butch's solo. I love Butch, but I do not support his solos.
Lover Lay Down needs to make a comeback as well. I was looking at the setlist scan at DMBAlmanac for the Phoenix 2002 show and realized that they replaced Lover Lay Down and Seek Up (which were on the setlist) with Fool to Think and The Stone. Ouch. Why you gotta bend Phoenix over like that Dave?

Chelsie, I realized today that the reason I was having trouble planning my trip out to LA to see the Crason shows is because that's still over 2 months away. I only made plans to fly to Colo. for the 4th of July this past weekend. So, that's the other side of the coin for ya. :)

mray10
06-17-2004, 02:54 PM
Well, I was going to fly to Denver (still home, though I haven't lived there for 6 years) and catch Blues Traveler at red Rocks, but plans changed again last night and now I'm going to Telluride.

The drive up to there from Phoenix is one of the most boring I've ever taken (once you're past Flagstaff anyway) but it's worth it once you're there.

Have fun Jen, as you well know ... "New York City is greatest damn city in the whole damn" er, something

Chelsie, I miss the Denver "cold." Are you an AZ native? My fiancee is and we tend to bicker about whether cold or hot temps are more tolerable. Of ourse, to her, 70 degrees is "cold." San Diego is great, though. I took many a road trip there when I was in college (as well as thelast two years to see dmB at Coors), the best of which was Spring Break my senior year when 10 of us rented a beach house at Mission Beach and spent the entire week ... well, sinfully. Ah, college.

Best of lucky to y'all and be safe on the road and in the air.

Matt I am almost an AZ native. I was born in Utah and moved here when I was 4 and I am now 23 so minus the 6 months I lived in Denver I have lived here for 18 1/2 years and would take Denver over Phoenix anyday.

Only the tough survive a Phoenix DMB show. Its probably one of the hardest places to see a concert. I have no idea why DMB decides to play there during the summer. Maybe a special trip during winter is in order?

I fully expected them to play the new Glendale Arena this year to get out of the heat ... but not so much. Which is OK, hot as it can be, dmB is an outdoor band. Plus, we now have the possibility of having a monsoon roll in that night. And that would kick ass.

chels012002
06-26-2004, 09:15 PM
DMB likes Cricket cause of the acoustics they like outdoor arenas you wont get as good a show at Glendale as you will at cricket.

phunky420
06-26-2004, 11:58 PM
I think the acoustics are great at cricket. I actually like the acoustics better at cricket than the Gorge! I think a lot of the sound is lost in the canyon.

chels012002
06-27-2004, 05:00 PM
I am with you phunky but my point stands true the band likes Cricket cause of the sound plus I think they can cram a ton of people in the venue offer lawn seats and still be consitered sold out!

The sound is pretty good out at Desert Sky (remember the old days?). I've never been to Gorge, but it's better in Phoenix than at Coors out in san Diego, although Coors is a better venue overall ... IMO. And, of course, I grew up going to concerts at Red Rocks and there's just nowhere like that place in terms of atmosphere, sound, or anything.

Eli, I believe I'm also in Section 202, but I can't remember what row number. I may have posted it somewhere in this thread but I'm too lazy to look.

Whether it was the monsoon/dust storm show of 99, the unbelievable #41 jam with soulive in 01, Dave breaking out Wynona for the first time in forever in 02, and the incredible show last year with Warren Haynes & Cortez, it's always enjoyable. But yes, last year was a killer. At least late August will be cooler than late July. I look forward to seeing some Ants there! (I'll be on the lawn - which I'm ok with. i'm going some friends). -jesse

This is actually the first year i'm going to be on the lawn. I have a bunch of people going and i didn't want to be a snob with my warehouse tickets :)

So i'll just get all sweaty and stinky with all the other fools...LOL

Here are the songs i'm wishing for:

Halloween
Minarets
Proudest Monkey
Dreaming Tree
Thing(hmm?)
LIOG
Two Step
Tripp BIlls
Say Goodbye
Loving Wings
Jimi Thing

Hmm...that looks like a pretty good set, maybe a little short but i would take it :)

Off the top of my head, here's a nice setlist for a rainy, monsoon night in Phoenix:

So Much to Say >
Anyone Seen the Bridge? >
Pantala Naga Pampa >
Rapunzel
Granny
Stay
Pig
Joy Ride
Crush
(Some Do, Some Don't) Recently (Pretty, Pretty Girl, Take Me to the River)
Hello Again
(Lap Steel) Grace Is Gone (Hoedown)
Lover Lay Down
#41 (Everyday) >
(#36) Everyday (#36) >
Thing/Hmm?
Crazy-Easy
Two Step
--
(Drums) Say Goodbye
(Nature) Tripping Billies

The songs I really want to hear this year are:
Seek Up, Say Goodbye, the 5 new ones, Lover, Jimi (with scat), Nancies, and BOWA.

Obviously they're not all on that list (though in retorspect a Rapunzel > BOWA opener would also work for me) but I'm going to see at least one night in Carson and the 9/12 show in San Fran (if it happens), so I'd be as happy as a pig in you-know-what to get the set above ...

You would not see me complaining with that setlist.

However, you better throw in "I Did It" or "Space Between" to make it more realistic :)

Aug....too far away. I guess John Mayer will have to hold me off till then. I have to keep myself from comparing DMB and John Mayer. They are different and thats OK. Right?

John Mayer is really great on the guitar but some of his lyrics are lame.
Dave is OK on the guitar but MOST of his lyrics are awsome....

But, this is not a john mayer and Dave thread...THIS IS A PHOENIX THREAD!!!

Whoo Hoo can't wait.....its sad that i'm this pumped up and i still have to wait 1 month....

I'm going to see the Cure next month also...should be kinda cool.

Ok....1 song you must see in Phoenix?

For me its going to be:
Seek Up

They are going to open phoenix with it...LOL

A month away (more than a month actually ...), but what a lovely time it's going to be once it's here. My birthday on the 23rd, DMB at Cricket the 24th, DMB with BEP and Ben in LA on th 28th, and Golden Gate Park on 9/12. Damn I can't wait.

Just 1 song I must see? Well, if I have to pick 1 I'd say Crazy-Easy, it's my favorite of the new ones. But it's pretty likely it will be played. A bit less likely, but something I really want to hear is "Thing/Hmm?"
And if I got to three shows and don't get to see Jimi with the scat I'm going to be very unhappy.

chels012002
07-13-2004, 11:27 PM
There has gotta be something you can do to make it work. Maybe go talk to a counselor and let them know you have a wedding or something. Those are easy to fake up on the Computer and you have a month to get cracking :lol :p

mray10

Tell him you have to see your granny :)

:lol :thumbsup

Usually teachers will be lenient about that if you contact them. The dropping after the first missed class policy is just to weed out those who don't intend on taking the class and moving in people who do want to take it. If you email the prof I'm sure he or she will let you slide. Offer to come in early to pick up a syllabus or something and you're golden.

My friend who I'm going to the show with has classes that start that day at Phoenix College (and I might, too, if I register for this writing workshop I want to take), but what the hell.

EDIT: BTW, do you have a full size version of your avatar? It looks kick ass.

Do you guys think the heat affects DMB adversely or positively?

Its seems that DMB really rocks at phoenix, even with the heat. However, i have never been to a east coast show so i'm a little closed off.....

chels012002
07-16-2004, 11:22 AM
I think it is a positive affect just cause the better they do the harder it is for the heat to get to them you know. I know there are huge fans up on stage so it should slightly minimize our heat to them. I really think if they hated the weather here they would have moved the venue to Glendale or AWA.
I also think, and this is funny, that if the D-backs keep loosing the way they are whom ever is in charge of programming at BOB (chase) will start letting shows be put on there to collect extra money. :lol

Any opinions?

I don't know that the heat affects how they play. But I think it definitely influenced last year's set list. That set last year was VERY mellow and full of chill song. The only really fast-paced rocking song they played until SM2S > Rapunzel was Help Myself.
And I thought that was perfect since it was such a hot hot night. It ended up being a really unique show that was very powerful at the end because the energy had been building all night.

As for concerts at the BOB ... maybe, but it's unlikely you could sell enough tickets to really make that a feasible investment for the owners. Most shows at Desert Sky or the arenas don't sell out, so ...

it's a good thing the Phoenix show is the first one I'm going to this year, otherwise I wouldn't care about it at all anymore. Now, I have a nice system. I can be excited about Phoenix because it's first, I can be excited about LA for Black Eyed Peas and Ben Harper and I can bust a nut over the thought of Golden Gate because ... well, I'm just that excited

JanelleM

Yeah it it possible to be on DMB overload?? I mean not in a bad way, but in an it consumes you way? I started out with the intention of going to 6 shows Alpine/Phoenix/Gorge. Decided to take a trip to NYC instead of going to Alpine, then decided to do Alpine still and skip Gorge. Now Alpine is two weeks away and I had an unexpected finance problem and can't go. Now this SF show which I would love to see. Ughh seems searching for flights and thinking of the next way to see DMB has become a part time job.

mray10
07-20-2004, 02:39 PM
I just keep setting my standards higher every year. I saw one show in both 95 and 96. Then in 97 I saw Dave and Tim and both nights at red Rocks. In 98 I saw both nights at red Rocks. In 99 I saw Dave and Tim in Phoenix and the band at Mile High. The bad years were 00 and 01 when I only saw them once each summer. It was awful to only see one show when I had gotten used to 2-3. So in 2002 I went to Phoenix and Chula Vista. Did the same thing last year. This year I figured I'd keep it the same and go to Phoenix and one of the LA shows. But now I'm going to Frsico, too, so I'm setting a new standard.

Next year? I'm all about the Gorge, baby.

JanelleM
07-20-2004, 03:55 PM
Next year Gorge for me too...I am so bummed I couldn't pull it off this year but I am upgrading this year and next:

2001-DMB PHX
2002-DMB PHX
2003-DMB PHX
2004-D+F LA/DMB PHX (hopefully SF too since I had to bag Alpine :( )

2003: D&T at Davidson, DMB at SPAC (2), Atlanta. Considered CP
2004: SPAC (1), Tampa, Phoenix, San Diego. Considered Gorge, couldn't pull that off. Now considering (sorta) SF. Thankfully my flight to SD/Phoenix is free on miles, but I'd probably have to pay for SF. The bigger issue is vacation time...

Last year was my first show. I'm heading down this year with my girlfriend who will be visiting from Michigan.

I'm hoping for an awesome show, this will be her first I believe. It sucks a bit that I got seats that are worse than last year's, but that's how it goes.

I Did It was played in Phoenix in 2002, but not last year.

I'm not that worried about the "similar" sets they've been playing. Partly, this is because I realized last year that the only reason I care about setlist variation is because I look at every setlist and d/l every show. It's far more important to me that I actually see a good show. And here's what I've noticed ... Beginning of 2003 had all kinds of songs being played, lots of rare songs and good variation ... but the shows weren't really that great. Toward the end of the year the setlists got quite a lot more predictable, many of the rare songs the band had been playing disappeared but ... the shows in August and September last year were as good as any the band has ever played. And I think that's true this year, as well. They aren't playing everything, but they're playing so well that it doesn't matter.

The other thing is that we're lucky this year and we're getting them toward the end of the tour, so pretty much anything they've played up until then we have a chance of hearing.

JanelleM
07-26-2004, 01:11 PM

mray10
07-26-2004, 01:21 PM
Yeah, I've had a little LIOG resurrection the past few days ... definitely want to hear that one at some of my shows this summer. Phoenix would be a real good place to hear it.

BOWA opener in Golden Gate Park? Sounds good to me.

But the song I want to hear most in Phoenix is Good Good Time. Preferably without Rhyme before it. I'd also be down with Everyday - haven't heard that one in several years.

Agreed. I havn't been disapointed at a phoenix show...yet. My only complaint is that the shows arn't longer. But ehh...

I think a BOWA or LIOG would be awsome. Well..we know that the four new songs will get played....thats for sure ;)

We will be lucky to get a debut song in phoenix. Hope it happens but not holding my breath.

Its very soon....very soon...SPOON!!!

But anyways, I'm really looking forward to this show too! We definetely deserve a Seek Up since they jipped us out of it in 02. (They played the Stone instead). At least I have this week's Cincinnati show to hold me over til the 24th. We'll be up there with family this week.

And by the way, I've got all the DMB Phoenix shows if anybody's interested in a B&P or something. The only 2 I don't have are the 2 that don't exist. Time to get this back on top.

I'm wondering if the setlists after the break will be significantly different than they have been. History seems to indicate that things change up a little after even a brief hiatus. The second half of 2003, for example, was totally different. I'm wondering if they'll stop playing all the news songs every night. It makes sense to not play them all if you have a 2 night stand (a la West Palm) but maybe they'll lay off them. Or maybe they'll bust out something unheard as yet.

I just want it to be totally awesome at this point I dont care what is played. I just want to have a damn good time and relax.

I think after the break they will continue to play the new songs, or come out with newnew songs :)

I would assume some more debuts will show up. Probably a Spoon, Dreaming Tree, Minarets, and maybe even Halloween...

Hey all!

I am seriously thinking about catching the Phoenix show. I live in MI but have family in AZ... So the question is... How do you all rate the venue? I've been to the Palace in Detroit (mediocre), Alpine Valley, Deer Creek, and Riverbend. I assume it's an indoor venue... but what else can you tell me about it? Bad seats? Sections I should avoid if I manage to get tickets? That kind of stuff. Any info would be greatly appreciated. :)

Thanks,
Michelle

Cricket Pavilion is outdoors. Meaning it will be incredibly hot... I'm flying west from FL to attend the show (and visit relatives). I've been to Phoenix once, and it was hot... and I'm from FL! As far as the venue, I know DMB had a great show there in 2002... but specifics, not sure.

Thanks for the info! :)

Hmm, outdoors... I'm not sure that my low tolerance for high temperatures will be able to take that (and please NO DRY HEAT COMMENTS!LOL)! Otoh... it is DMB... Well, as long as I can get pavillion seats I'm sure it will be fine. I still haven't made up my mind about it though. I know I'm going to go to AZ sometime in the next couple of weeks but am not sure of the timing... Hopefully things can work out.

Anyway, thanks again and I'd appreciate anymore info ppl may have! :)

Once the sun goes down and the buds star going its all good. YOu almost don't even notice the heat. You just dance your ass off and have a good time.

It'll be hot to anyone not used to the insanity we call summer here in Phoenix, but if you're under the pavilion for the roof it's fine. And all the better once the sun goes down. As a venue it's ... pretty good. Probably a better than average amphitheater, but it's nothing special in the vein of Alpine. Good sounds, had a great show there in 1999 and another very unique setlist last year. Other years were always OK if not great. That's my opinion anyway. You should definitely make the trip. It'll be a party.

Hi, Hope you guys don't mind me jumping in again... At the Riverbend show Dave did the Bowie/Lil Jon outro on Too Much. It's frickin awesome!

And looks like it's all set for the Phoenix show for me! I've gotten a couple contacts on tickets and am in the process of buying them! Can't wait to see the band again!! Wooohoo!! :D

Btw, I'll offer up an audio B&P of Riverbend for y'all. PM if you're interested. :)

EDIT: Oh and the Bowie outro was "Angel" can't remeber the actual title at the moment... :o

mray10

They did a Phish Bowie outro?

Probably talking about the ever ass-kicking "Golden Years" outro on "Too Much."

As for you, Jen, everyone needs a chance to hear Lover Lay Down at least once in their life ... and all the better if you're with your lover at the time. ;) I have actually heard it twice, but not since 1997. One of those songs that I've heard, but feel like I haven't since it's been so long. Like IBYU which I saw once (1996), and TypSit (not since 1998). I hope those treats stay around until Phoenix, at least.

Mmmm....Beer. Ya that sounds like a plan. I like beer and Dave Mathews band. I think i shall attend this concert event.

Ok. Parking lot is pretty standard. Nothing crazy like phish but still usually good people. Just make sure you put your beer in a plastic cup! The cops will bust you if you don't.

I'm probably going early so i can check out the sound check. Expect it to be hot...i mean really hot.

What do you guys do to meet up?

Here are the 3 songs i want played in phoenix:
Obviously the 4 new songs are going to be played. Can't wait for Sugar Will :)

1. Seek Up (This will open the show)
2. Halloween (Encore)
3. You Never Know (mid set treat)

If these are played I will be splitting open and melting.....

I have never sat at a show...is that weird? Tailgating at Phoenix is quite lame to be honest. There will be some spots set up with cool people, but it's a commuter show and most people are heading to the show from bars or work and heading home or back to the bars after the show.

Songs I want to here:

Best of What's Around
Lie In Our Graves
You Never Know would be a nice surprise, but I am sure not :(

mray10
08-16-2004, 03:44 PM
I've sat at some shows (some DMB and some not) when I'm out on the lawn. That can be kind of a fun way to listen to a chill song.

There are many songs I want to hear, but I'd say these are the 'likely' songs that I really want:

Lie In Our Graves
Everyday

Less likely:

Lover Lay Down
Seek Up

Pinch me, I'm dreaming:

Say Goodbye

Hey all!

It looks like I'm officially going! I finally made contact with someone who has an extra pair. I thought, yeah, my search is done. No WAAAY will the rest of my family want to go (my step-Mom, step-brother, and his g/f) but what happens? An hour after I mostly 'secure' the ticket exchange my Dad calls me, "Well it looks like we'd all like to go!" Ahh! That means I now have to find THREE more tickets! Back to cruising the message boards and pestering ppl with my requests. LOL

Btw, if anyone has extra pavillion tickets and would like to promote mixed family unity shoot me an email or IM. :D

It's bad enough that they've all decided to go with me, I don't think I could stand the complaining and disapproving looks from my Dad as someone passed a doobie, made out in front of us, or lord knows what else... Or the bitching from my stepmother about how unruly these young kids are, etc. Please don't hold my family against me ppl! I love them but geeze...

Besides I have managed to secure enough pavillion tickets for all! It was a busy day emailing and checking all the sites, but I've managed to find a total of 5 tickets and can now rest easy. :D

Man, I'm really looking forward to this show. To be honest, I don't think this show can beat the 8.5.04 Riverbend show I saw, but I think it's gonna be great nonetheless. I hope they pull out a song they haven't done so far. YNK would be nice. And we definetely need that Seek Up.

For those who are gonna be on the lawn, when are you gonna get there? I guess you're allowed to park at 5, and the gates open at 5:30. For the past couple years, I've gotten there around 4, and each time some old geezer told me to turn around in the parking lot and not come back til 5. But instead of turning around, I've just parked. Haven't gotten towed so far. But if anyone knows of a better place to park, so I can there early, let me know. Maybe somewhere around 75th & Thomas? That just means a LONG WALK.

I was also thinking of IT for Carson but I already have an extra I can't get rid of, so I didn't need to double my problem. Anyone want to see Ben Harper in LA next Saturday night? Seriously. :)

Well I figure I would throw in my two sense. First of all, hello to everyone out there! Dave is almost upon us in the blazzin heat that is the Arizona desert. This will be my 4th year in a row going to Phx to see Dave and I'm excited as ever. I had read in a previous post that someone is concerned about security. I wouldn't worry to much the only time I can remember security ever being a noucense was back in oct 2001, Mathcbox 20 show, but that was because of 9/11. I don't usually tall gate at desert sky, I still prefer the name over that damn creature that seems to be everywhere in az and annoying as hell, I do all my tailgating at Macayos in the mall next door. i guess you can call me a sucker for a cold margarita in the 100+ temps. Hope you all of a smoking great time;) !

I did the lawn last year and it is not worth going early unless you have a large group. It does not fill up untill later in the day, anyway is 50 to 100 feet worth hours in the sun? Not in my book, just bring binoculers. On the Macayos thing, I have been doing that for about 5 years, not just Dave, and have always had a blast! They usually have a big pre- concert party!

I typically try not to get to the venue too early unless I'm really psyched to see the opening band. I much prefer to pay $2.50 for a beer at Macayos then $6 at Cricket. Anyhow, that's my reasoning on not getting to the venue too too early.

That is true especially if you have a reserved seat. Although I think 2.50/6 beer prices would be great because I think their a little low. I know this isnt the right forum but........ anyone in here going to the gorge this year as in 2 weeks:bounce

If you're on the lawn, sure, get there early. But if you've got reserved no reason to show up before 7 or 730. Unless the opening band is worth seeing.

Speaking of the opening band, anyone ever seen this Red West group?

I went to The Red West's website... they sound pretty good. In another thread somewhere on here, someone said they were pretty good. I'll probably show up to hear them. I'll get them again two days later in SD. Hey, it's gotta be a better act than the Nappy Roots were...

Yeah there is a VIP section where box seat tickets holders can go before/during.after the show. Still a rip off, but at least they bring your drinks to your table while you're watching the show. I saw Widespread Panic form a box there and it was kinda sucky.
