Why don't we just teach people how to resize them?
'Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for life'

Save your image to your computer, Right click on it goto properties, and then the summary tab. Take a look at where it says Width and Height.
We need 50 by 50, so we take each number divided by 50 to get the percent that it needs to be changed by.

EXAMPLE: Width: 150 Height: 94... = Width: 50/150 = .33 Height: 50/94 = .53

Then we open up paint. Goto Image, Stretch/Skew and for the Width which is also the Horizontal direction type in your value, we want this one reduced by 33% and the Height which is the Vertical direct reduced by 53%.

Hit ok, Save and check the properties of the picture again, to make sure it's 50 by 50. If not, just do it again with the new values.

Example, The Cubs one A few above this post is Width 65 Height 65. So they both need to be reduced by 76%. Open up paint, and goto Image Strecth/Skew and type in 76 for Horizontal and Vertical, Then save. It will come out looking like this.

EDIT: But getting rid of the white takes some PSP to use, so that's a whole other case, haha. Hope this helped someone.

no, it's easy to switch back and forth. just make sure that your current avatar is saved on your computer before you change to something else. :)

'Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for life'.I offer my services like this because some people just dont want to be bothered with learning how to make an avatar (i know this goes against your point, but my point is that I enjoy satisfying a user with a quality avatar.)
the other thing is, ive often found that people who make their own avatar in Paint come up with a heavily pixelated image. Paint just doesnt always cleanly resize images. Also an image who's color type is Indexed will resise poorly. Paint is unable to convert to the RGB format.
I have Photoshop, and I love that program to death. Im definitely not the best at it, but i know how to get around in it, and ive made some fairly nice images with it. (ironically i dont know how to remove red-eye, but thats a different discussion). Photoshop can easily convert a file from Indexed or CMYK color to RGB. Then I can easily reduce the image size into a clear looking picture.
Another thing that Photoshop can do is transparencies. Paint's not so good at that. And MS Photo Editor sucks at it too.
Yet another useful option with Photoshop is the "Save for web" feature. It saves images with compressed file sizes while managing to retain image quality. Very useful, im sure the Admins dont mind that it can save some bandwidth too.

Basically it boils down to a few things:
1) i have photoshop and like to use it
2) i like making avatars for people
3) my avatars dont (usually) look crappy


on a side note, im baffled how i havent found this thread till tonight. my other thread did become a request thread but it got pretty big and people had trouble finding things in it. this thread seems to be doing a good job. i like how many people who dont usually make avatars are helping out. :thumbsup
