I'm in 8th grade and i'm thinking of doing an acoustic performance of a dmb song for my elementary school. What do you think I should do?
Crash-I know it perfectly on guitar, but it's a Catholic school. I can skip the hike up your skirt part and sing "say nothing but you say it so well" (i dunno?)
Seek Up- Almost know it perfectly, but i need a tim reynolds or it sounds boring.
Lover Lay Down-i can play this flawless, I'm thinkin about this one most
Two Step-I need help with rhythm, but it sounds aiight
BOWA-I need a lot of practice if i chose this one
dreaming tree-booooorrrrrrrrrrrrrinnnnnnnnnngggggggg, i love the song, but there are 5 year olds watching and they'll be fast asleep
grey st-can't hold that big not long enough, hope my voice doesnt croak
ants-need practice with the verses but i can do it
warehouse-timing
christmas-i cant sing it in tune, but i can work on it
for those who have performed these songs before, which ones get the biggest reaction and attention from the crowd? tell me what you think

i would say Ants

I'd go with crash. It's the most popular song of Dave's, and I'd say that if you're playing for an elementary crowd, do something they have the greatest chance of knowing.

i would say Ants
i agree, its more upbeat and has a higher energy then
crash... it'll let your audience get involved (possibly clap along)

you can do seek up? damn!
the timing of singing some of those verses and playing at the same time screws me up... it's in some form of 3... like 3/4 or something...
more power to ya.

I say that BOWA and ants would be best for a talent show, but you would have to get to work :) .

ya i forgot, theres another song i learned to play that i didnt mention and its actually in my top 4 most likely. And a lot of people have heard it! It's-GRAVEDIGGER!
So the top 4 i'm narrowing it down to:
crash
seek up
gravedigger
lover lay down
who knows i could go for a 4 song set?
no ants bcuz there are too many high notes

You can sing crash and lover lay down, but you can't keep tune for Xmas song ? I find thats a pretty easy song to keep tune with, while crash and lover are much more difficult.

You do know...you don't have to perform it EXACTLY like Dave does.

For a talent show.... play something upbeat, people get bored very easily, especially in a long show.

man i wish my voice wasn't terrible cuz if it was half decent, i'd do my jr. high talent show with a dmb song... hmm... lets see, id probably do the stone.
but for your talent show, you should definitely go with crash. you can definitely handle the guitar parts.
tripping billies would impress people if you can learn it in time. your hands fly up and down the neck on that one.

ya the darn billies verse is hard!
Stewie

i can play that enrique englasis (sp) song, Hero or something ... if you need help. ;)
but i'd go with lover lay down.

this isn't a dmb song- but a friend of mine did 'for what its worth' by buffalo springfield at our HS talent show and it rocked...everyone was singing the chorus: "stop, hey whats that sound...everybody look what's going down?"
and its not that hard to play- verse is just E chord, A chord and the chorus is E-D-C-E-E-A

I'd eliminate Seek Up for this talent show, as you mentioned it's too boring w/o an accompanying guitarist. I'd also skip Lover Lay Down, I think it would just be too mellow for you to really attract any attention. So go with either Crash or Gravedigger, which ever you prefer..... but I would recommend Gravedigger b/c of its recent popularity
Good luck, rock on :thumbsup

nice man... who cares whether its a catholic school... do crash and leave in the hike up your skirt part. so you might maybe get in a little trouble, go for it. the rest of the students will love it.

either antsmarching or crash, not gravedigger though, they may not like it. The reason ants marching or crash is because everyone knows crash and ants marching is upbeat and sounds good to younger people (with less attention spans).

i would go with crash but if you've got an extra 7 or 8 hours and you decide to learn the billies verse i would go with that
justinandimcool
04-09-2004, 03:16 AM
right now choosing between crash and gravedigger, gravedigger is a song everyone in my class knows, but its in 3 weeks...enough time to learn billies verse so if i learn it i'm choosing billlies
BouldrinSoChill
04-09-2004, 03:49 AM
billies would be a little more exciting than gravedigger... so id go with billies. But i think either billies or crash would be good.

trust me man, do crash. Everyone will know it and you said you were good at it. And I wouldn't worry so much about the lyrics. I went to a catholic school, and maybe its more strict at yours, i don't know, but i don't think it would be a big deal. You could always change that one part to something about your school or the crowd as to personalize it. Whatever you choose, good luck. And congratulations on being able to perform dmb in 8th grade.

Wow, thats really good. How could you learn billies in only 2 hours? You must be pretty good at guitar.
See if you can record it with your computer microphone. I'm sure we'd all love to hear it and give you some tips. I can also help you get it up on the internet if you dont know how to do that.

been playin only five-six months actually- i guess i learn pretty fast, it all started with a few chords, then i looked at tab and learned songs. I have big hands so thats sort of an advantage in billies.
i dont think i can record it, my internet is slow and i dont think i have a mic i dunno much about computers i just use the internet
