For me an idea will pop into my head - an object, emotion, event, etc. - then i try to get to a pen and paper asap. And then i just write what i know about that thing.
Granted, I'm not a very experienced songwriter, i haven't got many to speak of but i'm writing them as fast as they come to me. I wouldn't take this as advice...there's no certain way to write a song - all i can say is go with your gut and do what is comfortable for you.
Hope this helps in some way.

i usually come up with song on the guitar first then once im satisfied with the chords i play the tune over and over in my head try to come up with lyrics by the way i think the song sounds. then once i have some preliminary lyrics i play and sing it adding in some improv. its slow going and the lyrics constantly change but it works for me.

I do a combo of the above post, rounding out a main idea musically, and then I try to focus on an idea or emotion and sing along with the song. I generally don't stop and write down what I'm singing right away unless I come up with something that clicks immeadiately. I'll develope a song for about a week and the lyrics will eventually fill into place as the strong ones are repeated and I start to remember them.

like i've said on here before...i have trouble writing melodies...but lyrics come easy.
they just have to be there. it's been said a million times that you cannot just make them show up and expect them to sound good. if you can do that...you will soon be a millionaire.
getting emoitionally destroyed by the opposite sex is usually a good way to get started.

I am a fan of making the music first and then writing simply on how you feel when you play the song. It makes the music meaningful I think.

You might try writing some poetry without any music in mind, to begin with, then find a melody that fits the mood and revise your poem into something that fits the music.
Try to you "interesting" words once in a while--and phrase things in a way I might not have heard before. After all, if I wanted to hear somebody talk over music, I'd just go to a club.

I'd have to say I do some of all of the previous mentioned methods. So I guess the only "different" advice I have to give you is to try many different ways of writing. You'll find you are stronger at doing it some ways over others, but that the weaker ways are always extremely useful, depending on the song, your mood, etc...
Good luck, don't give up!

I like to play with words, so i'll just make up a cool title and write whatever the hell I want to about it, then shove it into some chords, and slowly polish it. Hooker Bowl is my lastest one.
