Good call on the Shure... I ended up getting my Beta 58 (upgraded version of the SM-58) on eBay for $100, so that might be the one to go for if you find it at that price.

I love my shure SM-58. I have been gigging the past two weeks at some bars down at the beach with just my Shure SM-58 mic, My Taylor 414 Ltd, and my Crate acoustic 112 amp. It sounds pretty sweet and it will work until I get my JBL speakers and Crate power mixer. peace Jason

What's the difference between the SM57 and the SM58? I have an SM57 and it sounds great....however why would one get an SM58 over the SM57?

The 57 is an instrument mic.

The SM57 isn't necessarily just an instrument mic. It is mostly used for micing drums, but it is also used for vocals and spoken word. The SM57 is what the President of the USA uses on his podium (2 actually). If you watch MTV, you'll also see it on new and old videos. Granted, it is a little touchy without the windscreen, it can still be used. The 57 is essentially the 58 without the windscreen. I have both and they are workhorses. If you plan to use it JUST for vocals, get the 58. If you plan to only have one multipurpose mic, get the 57 and buy the extra windscreen for $10.

Just get the 58 if you're going to use it for vocals. The 57 is better for instruments(drums, guitars, etc.) and spoken. Same exact mic except the body of the 58 is made a bit tougher....but hell, they're both the toughest in the world.
