Hey all, I just got my guitar, a Martin DR, restrung for the first time. I unfortunately don't have much of an idea what kind of strings to use, or, more particularly, what gauge. The guy at the store said he thought a light gauge would be best, "12's". Now that I've got it back the strings seem too light and much thinner than my old ones; the sound is real tinny and not something I like. Does anyone have a suggestion of what strings, what gauge, would be best? Thanks.

Heavier strings tend to sound a little better and have better sustain. Try some custom lights or mediums. I play medium elixirs and like them a lot. There was a similar question here (http://www.antsmarching.org/forum/showthread.php?t=95985) if you want to check out what some people said.

I'm not an expert or anything. But Martin SP mediums have always been good to me. It's a long lasting quality string....... :monkey

if you use anything higher than light, take it to the shop to get them put on the first time.
if a guitar is used to lights and extra lights and then you put on mediums or higher, you can actually cause damage to the neck. the store will be able to fik the truss rod and neck.
