DMB - January 2012 Studio Sessions

A friend of mine is vacationing in the Virgin Islands and sent me a few texts this morning. He sent a pic of himself with Rashawn at lunch. I haven't gotten to call him yet and get details but when I asked what they talked about, he texted that the band is going into the studio January 2nd to start recording the next album.

I had previously heard February but the earlier the better.

1/1 is purely for hangover recovery purposes, everyone has something to do that day.

At least sessions most likely mean trying new stuff over the summer. 2004 esque tour!

I could definitely see them changing it up. Each of their last five records have been produced by a different person.

The difference between this, Everyday, Busted Stuff, and Stand Up is that Big Whiskey was met with favorable responses and reactions from the band, the fans, critics and sales.

Everyday had huge financial success, but did not sit well with the fans. Busted Stuff was to just get something out there for the Lillywhite Sessions, Stand Up flopped among fans.

I'm not worried about them musically, this unit can produce some absurdly good musical tracks, but I worry about Dave lyrically. He's gotta be comfortable with the lyrics before he's comfortable enough to release an album.

You kidding? It's the first album the refused to meet the record companies deadline for. The specifically made it clear they were taking their time with that album, and they did.

Hopefully they will follow their M.O. of not recording songs they debut on the road when it comes to this song.

I hope this is true. I get just as if not more excited for studio news than for tourdates. I'm curious as to what, if any, creative impact Jeff Coffin will have. Here's to hoping they keep producing solid new music (not Blackjack), Dave remembers how to write lyrics again and they actually allow Boyd to participate this time.

No one restricted Boyd more than himself. The way I see their recording process, it seems like anyone can inject their ideas at any time. It just comes down to doing it. Tim's input has nothing to do with Boyd.

I'll believe it when I see an official announcement about it. I believe 100% that they'll hit the studio this year. Most professional musicians spend a little time in the studio every year.... And if they take a year off like most of the guys in DMB did, of course they'll go back to the studio the next year. I'm skeptical about another album until I hear an official announcement.

Two things I'm hoping for:
1) They let Boyd out of time-out so he can play this time around
2) Tim tones it down/uses the acoustic more.

I strongly, but respectfully, disagree. He was not the most important element by any means, but still critical to what made those albums sound so great. His interplay with Roi on songs like Rhyme & Reason, #41, DIDO, Bartender is one of the things that hooked me on this band. He has some really nice moments, such as the middle of Typical Situation and the one chorus of Rapunzel. Off the top of my head he's also great and noticeable on JTR and Last Stop. On SU and even BW, he was more window dressing than anything else, popping up for small moments here and there. I want more of that interplay between violin and sax than just Boyd sticking his head up for a short solo on a couple of songs.

Re: DMB - January 2012 Studio Sessions

My expectations are an album between BW and Everyday in terms of quality.

The Bad:
1.) No Roi, who not only played a big role on the sax, but pushed everyone else to really try
2.) No Lillywhite, who without, I doubt the band can make a Big 3 quality album

The Good:
1.) The band's coming off their best album they made in years
2.) Cavallo is probably producing, who's a lot better than Batson or Ballard
3.) The band is generally playing much better than in 2006-07

Until I'm proven wrong, I seriously think all that is a function of Lillywhite/Dave's sonwriting/LeRoi creating a collage out of everyone's contributions more than Boyd's creative spark. I mean, the guy is limited in a live setting, I don't see how that changes in the studio.

i could not agree more

llws captain is amazing work by boyd
listen to boyd follow stefans baseline in the stone..its unreal

but the thing i agree with most is that boyd and roi fed each other and complimented each other so nicely...id love to see what this horn section can do in the studio with out leaving boyd as "just another guy on stage" both of these musical parts should compliment one another moving forward

Completely agree. If Dave can write lyrics as solid as Squirms lyrics consistently, this album will be pretty good.

Re: DMB - January 2012 Studio Sessions

I def say there is no reason this won't happen, the boys are still high on what's happened the last 4 years.

I think it will be very interesting to see what coffin can produce in the stereo...remember on big whiskey he only played mostly roi parts, he has the ability to be a leader on the songwriting fronts just like roi was

I think fonze will be the other important factor. he seems energized, and the creative juices are flowing, remember, he wrote some of our favorite songs and he has the most diverse taste and influence in music of anyone in the band. Plus the recent movie stuff and that extra work with Mike Mcready have me pumped

The return of Boyd would be nice, we all know carter will kill it, would be nice to see tim very involved

I think the album will be great if they continue what they did for big whiskey, like it or not, that was the first step in the right direction for the band since 2000, they have 3 virutosos in the band and they're into the music more than ever. If they revert back to just playing over dave's songs, i think it will be wasted talent.

Plus the recent movie stuff and that extra work with Mike Mcready have me pumped

gotta assume i know which 3, but who were you thinking?

also, you're completely right about utilizing the musicians, especially with us not seeing daves full potential in songwriting in recent years. this album has to focus on the band and the music, which has SO much potential.

im also excited to see songs written completely void of leroi. i want to see jeff bring songs from the studio to the stage and evolve them. i love what he's done with dmb's music (i respect it, anyway) but in essence they are really lerois parts and in that respect he is limited. i want to see what a musician like him with a musical history like his can do with the dmb

Re: DMB - January 2012 Studio Sessions

If Jeffs parts he writes for this new album are any bit symbolic of his work with bfft or the mu'tet oh man, are we in for a treat. And as said before, I think this band is inspired. The last 30 or so shows played have been better (on average) than the last 100+ preceding them. Let's see what they can do in the studio and hope for the best.

Looking forward to it, if only to get a break from Big Whiskey.

Cavallo is the Chairman of Warner Brothers Records. I would think that affects his availability to produce another DMB album for RCA.

Bring on Lillywhite.

Pretty confident you said that it would be released around this time. Studio sessions could mean a release in a year. Nice try though.

I could be wrong, but I believe that issue has been worked out.

i believe so as well. i feel like they'd be recording in NYC or Haunted Hollow if Lillywhite was attached.

That could mean anything... He's worked with so many artists. I wouldn't read into that in the slightest

i agree that more info would be nice, but this guy has been an ant since 04 and that was his first post, so it must be true. it's not like he's got a dastardly plan, waiting seven years for a thread like this, just to lie about eating lunch with RR.
