this is the first thread on mraz every created on ants.
true story. |
Re: Jason Mraz
Not the first thread, but who gives a shit.
Early Mraz, pre-radio is great. Listen to Live at Java Joe's. The album Waiting for my Rocket to Come is awesome too. Wordplay is pretty meh, but We Sing, We Dance, We Steal things is also great. All in all, Mraz is awesome, but stubborn and close-minded people here on Ants will tell you otherwise. |

By close-minded I meant... he isn't Dave, he isn't Radiohead, therefore he must suck. There are plenty of those types here.

As others have said his stuff can be pretty hit or miss, live a java joes is great as well as waiting on my rocket to come and tonight, not again. Wordplay is probably his worst and we sing we dance has some great songs on it but it's pretty poppy too. He also has a newish live album: "beautiful mess live on earth" that is pretty solid, although it is rather poppy as well. If you like great singing as much as I do it's absolutely worth picking up any of the aformentioned albums. His voice is amazing. |

Re: Jason Mraz
Definitely go get Live at Java Joe's. That is a great album. I am sorry but if anyone hear can listen to Dream Life of Rand McNally and not smile or think at sometime during the song damn this guy is a hell of lyricist and pretty damn funny to boot you are a douchenozzle and have no sense of humor.

I remember hearing that back in high school in like 2002 and thinking man, this dude is awesome, I hope he plays a bar or something wherever I go to college. Then I heard The Remedy on the radio and didn't even realize it was the same guy. I still like his Waiting for my Rocket to Come stuff, but nothing beats Live at Java Joe's. |

Re: Jason Mraz
I like We Sing Dance Steal Things and Waiting for My Rocket to Come. He's really a lot better than what's on the radio, not that he's great or anything.
Selections for Friends is good too. |
Re: Jason Mraz
Early Mraz is great. He has an awesome voice and does awesome freestyle singing. The 34-minute Welcome to Schuba's medley on Selections for Friends is amazing. Live at Java Joe's and Selections are GREAT albums, and I love most of his studio albums as well. I really hate that his stupid effing "I'm Yours" bullshit got so popular because it ruined him. I did see him last summer and had a great time, though he isn't what he used to be (creative, unique, etc.).
edit: I wanted to post this b/c Mraz get's a lot of hate around here and for someone like you who is new to Mraz, I wanted to give some positives about him so you give him a chance :) |
Re: Jason Mraz
i really like im yours, i dont see what is so bad about it other than that it go so out of control popular. not exactly jason's fault.
i love it for what it is: a really chill, sweet pop song. |

he is clever, i'll give him that but I dreamed I went to England and met the spice girls there for tea They lost one more they're down from four to my favorite number three But they're still quite spicy as the orange flavor And oh so nice to do me the favor and lick my icing under the table now But I gotta leave town mr. Nally, just as scary spice was about to go down on me And don't ask how mr. Nally and give up the towel mr. Nally and run while clever and possibly funny, it is a stretch to say those a great lyrics. first off, i don't listen to dmb too much anymore, and never got into radiohead, so i'm not one of those guys, but i find mraz almost un-listenable. i don't like how he sings to be honest and it sort of has a novelty affect to me where every one of his songs kind of blend together. i guess his music just seems a bit immature to me. then again i like bands like neil young, bob dylan, tom waits, wilco, tallest man on earth and my morning jacket, so i'm probably nowhere near mraz's target audience |

and ive never understood the love for rand mcnally..i almost always skip it when it comes up on java joes. its a stupid song. but the rest of that cd is money, IMO |

it's funny because i love some of the old jazz singers, but he is like jazz lite and it just doesn't do anything for me |

and im pretty sure no one is claiming he is in the league of Bob Dylan, myself included :lol |

Re: Jason Mraz
The original I'm Yours is just a double guitar track and double vocal track, thats it. No drums, no harmonies, just acoustic.
|
Re: Jason Mraz
oh..well i love toca's harmonies and i think i have the solo acoustic version too, they're all good IMO

Re: Jason Mraz
I know it's not cool to like Mraz around these parts, but I dig his stuff a lot. He's a hell of a storyteller and writes clever, sometimes humorous lyrics. He's an OK guitar player, but his arrangements are killer and his voice is spot on. I like his older stuff, and his newer stuff.
Sure, it's poppy, and for some folks it's less cool to like accessible music, but it's light, fun, entertaining stuff. But different strokes, I guess. OP, like everyone's said, check out Java Joe's, Waiting For My Rocket to Come, We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things, and Mr. A-Z has some solid stuff on it as well. Hope you enjoy it. |
