Epic Songs

this is inspired by eric(h)'s post saying he doesnt like freebird, stairway to heaven and Hotel california.

Well, all of those songs are considered epic, so what are your favorite "epic" songs. Epic songs IMO are songs that are great live and are nice and long. here's a short list to get started.

Stairway to Heaven-zeppelin
Hotel California-eagles
Freebird-skynyrd
Sunday Bloody Sunday-U2

Can't get any more epic than that.

How about an epic album?

"Throwing Copper" by +LIve+ has one of the grandest, most epic sounds I've ever heard on an album.

Stairway, yes I enjoy it, just because I don't listen to radio or the song alot.
Hotel California is ..eh..ok.
Freebird, and every other Skynard song, blows hard. Sweet Home Alabama and Tuesdays Gone are horrible, especially.
U2 stuff is ok.
What's Eruption? (seriously)

EDIT: shit..wrong thread.

Bowie and YEM def. Don't know about the other two, though. I'd say the Roses are Free from 12.31.99 is epic at 35 minutes. Damn...

Also:

Wilson
Divided Sky
AC/DC Bag

Heck, if we're adding to the list....I'll throw in my favorite, Carini ;)

Re: Epic Songs

I don't presume "epic" should simply mean "a really long song". "Epic" means a lot more. With that:

Rush - Xanadu
Rush - 2112 Overture

agreed completely. though the two songs i posted are 24 and 42 mintes long, respectivly, they epic quality comes from the grandois nature of them. the two bands have done songs just as long before (tull - passion play, and floyd - atom heart mother), but epic they are not.

though Flod - Shine On You Crazy Diamond is pretty epic, IMHO

R.E.M. "Let Me In"

That's a huge song for being so simple...

i would hardly consider that "epic". in my mind, to be epic it has to be considered great by at least 50% of the population or known by at least 75%.

i'm going to make a generalization here and say that at least 50% of the people really into moe don't even like lame crash.

Re: Epic Songs

a song that might not be well known can be epic, its more about the sound of the song, not the popularity

Re: Epic Songs

I will listen to the whole of Throwing Copper just to make the huge rockers on the album (i.e. "Iris", "The Stage", "White Discussion") and the final cut (that country ballad, whatever it is) sound that much more powerful. It was one of the first albums I ever listened to that seemed so much weaker when any given song was pulled out of context and removed from the patchwork of the whole product. I cannot agree with you more in that statement.

An epic song? Yes by Spanova. But no one here probably knows what that is. Another? The Twistinside by Everclear. Blood on the Motorway by DJ Shadow. The Road to LostWithiel by Bt.
