Columbus Review

This was my 9th show of the 2008 tour, and 34th overall. This was also my first time ever sitting in the 1st row. Seeing the band that close is something else. My girlfriend got a Carter stick, so I was happy for her. The other girl on the opposite side of me, also got a Carter stick. It's cool because it had his name printed on it, with his signature above it.

Don't Drink the Water -
I could see the band behind the screen before they raised it. After they went through the motions, and Tim through in some space ship noises. They got ready to start, but someone said something funny to Rashawn. This delayed thing for about a minute. Because everytime he'd raise the trumpet to his mouth to start the song. He'd start cracking up again. Overall a solid and standard 08' performance of the song.

One Sweet World - This was a song where you really have to appreciate how big it is for the band to have Rashawn. Jeff wouldn't be doing so well without him. More then once Rashawn cut off Jeff's playing, and had to show him the correct way to play the song. Throughout the show, after Rashawn would show him things. Jeff would occasionally make some notations on his sheet music. I never noticed his stand with the sheet music on stage before, but I've also never been this close. Again the standard with this song.

You Might Die Trying - Dave's voice has been great this year. This is a song that kind of shows off that what he gained in touch, he lost in power. The yells during the kick ass outro always seem like a struggle. Again the standard, and in 08' that's a good thing.

So Damn Lucky -
When Tim leaves, I can't imagine the band keeping this song around. Which is unfortunate because this song sounds like a DMB classic. I know some people on these boards complain, and hate it. I seriously have to doubt they've experianced this song live. I also think it just gets better with each performance.

Dreaming Tree -
I think this is the band's best song, and it's improved leaps and bounds since I first saw it in 2006. Everytime I see it live, I'm just amazed. I really like Coffin's flute solo. Though I do miss what Roi did with the penny whistle (i.e. SPAC N2).

Crash Into Me -
The crowd loves it, and I don't mind it. I do enjoy hearing Tim's fills on this.

When the World Ends - I forgot this song existed, and I'd like to go back to that. Tim kind of mimicked some Butch noises. Sounds about the same.

Two Step - The way it's being played this tour is FANTASTIC. Not to mention Carter's solo is great. Tim tears it up as always.

Sledgehammer -
Best cover of 2008, at least in my opinion. I think of all the covers, this is the one the crowd really responds to aside from Thank You.

The Maker - Surprised to see this pop up. Tim's solo was good, but I wasn't really feeling this.

Eh Hee - So much better this year. I hope it doesn't stick around without Tim though. The 07' versions, aside from Alpine N2, sound empty.

Water/Wine Jam >> -
Saw this at Deer Creek, and it started in a similar fashion. After Dave did a second verse I was like "Oh cool, a little longer then Deer Creek." Then when the band joined in, and Dave did a third verse, I was kind of like "HOLY SHIT!"

I wonder if this is #40 all over again. Do a one time really solid version of it, and make it seem like it's been worked on. You get your hopes up it will be at more shows, and then it's not. Because I don't see Columbus being a LT anytime soon. EVERYONE needs to vote this for the LT2008 comp. I can't wait to hear everyones reaction to the tapes of this. Bottom line, I loved it.

Cornbread -
Was surprised to see this go into Cornbread. Otherwise just the usual.

Jimi Thing - When it came time for Dave to scat. It seemed like Tim started to mimic Dave's scat. Before finally just taking over, and Dave let him solo. I thought it was pretty funny. Eventually Dave did scat though.

Everyday -
Not even Tim and Coffin can save this song.

Anyone Seen the Bridge >> - Not the usual drawn out long intro with the light. They still did it, but much shorter then usual.

Too Much (Fake) >> -
Knew about the soundcheck.

Tripping Billies -
The usual, but I prefer this song midset.

Little Thing (Tease) >> -
Not sure when you'll be able to hear it on the tapes. But Dave was playing this chords really lightly at first. I knew what it was instantly. I've seen him tease it before, so didn't think much. Then I heard Tim jump in, and I was getting pretty excited. Then the spotlight went on Dave while he played it. I started thinking D&T or a full band Little Thing.

I was dissapointed when he played the end, and started up Gravedigger. After how things went with Water/Wine I thought anything was possible tonight. Oh well, maybe at Alpine.

Gravedigger - Again, just the standard. Funny thing though was during the chorus where the horns kick in. Rashawn and Jeff play the first time around. Right after they were suppose to Rashawn got a "OH SHIT!" look on his face. Then he gave Jeff a knowing look, and then realized it as well. They started laughing about it. The next chorus they actually played on.

Ants Marching -
Carter did the snare intro, before giving a Halloween-esque semi solo. He was really rocking out the drums before they finally started into Ants. Worth a download and listen.

Overall the show was a standard and average 2008 show. In years past that wasn't always a good thing. This year they perform the hell out of everything. Water/Wine was a nice surprise, and I'm glad I drove down from the Chicagoland area. Hopefully most DMB fans get a chance to see a show this tour.

This also ends my run of consecutive shows. Since we came back from the break I've been to: Denver, Omaha, Deer Creek, and now Columbus. I will say they need to play Drive In Drive Out more, it should be a 2nd leg staple.

Re: Columbus Review

This was my 7th show as well, and could have been the best yet. I loved every moment, but I was trying to figure how a crowd like ours got a setlist so good. Dave even made fun of us a bit when he came on to introduce Ingrid Michaelson. So here is a quick review from me:

DDTW- nice little build up prelude, about a standard version, but with some good energy.

OSW- a really enjoyable song, though I always will wish for that instrumental intro to come back.

YMDT- A great song to really get Timmy going. I loved it in this spot for its energy. It's a lot better, imo, in this spot than E1 like we got at DC

SDL- This is another beautiful song that is great to hear everytime. The outro seemed longer than the version at DC

DT- This is my favorite song. Not a whole lot of people around me knew it, they seemed bored. I didnt care!!

Crash- It was nice just to get the crowd going, get all the preppy whatever you want to call them fans back into the concert.

WTWE- Scared about this without butch, they pulled it off without a hitch and sounded perfectly fine.

Two Step- For me, this version stole the show as Tim absolutely had an amazimg solo in this. He ripped it a new one, best Two Step i've ever heard

Sledgehammer- Surprised by how many people new this one, good cover.

The Maker- This made me laugh. Absolutely no one around me knew what this song was, so me and my buddy ended up being the only ones to sing it. Great to hear it come back though!! I knew we were getting something special at this point.

Eh Hee- Eh, like it, but would have preferred others. Decent though

Water/Wine Jam- AMAZING! To hear it go one for so long, with what I think were Round and Round lyrics mixed in as well, though idk. Most of the crowd didnt deserve this as they still had no clue what they were getting.

Cornbread- Fun song, definitely played too much though. Would be awesome if held back to only once every 6 shows

Jimi Thing- Really got the crowd into it, place was beginning to really rock at this point. Loved the outro too!

Everyday- Good version, much tighter than at DC.

ASTB->Too Much (Fake) -> Tripping Billies-- I was hopping they would do this and they executed it flawlessly!! Amazing energy and a great way to end a set!!

Little Thing Tease- This was much longer than at DC, good minute. No one really knew though.

Gravedigger- Its good, but I prefer it as a solo

Ants- Pretty much went straight into it, with snare intro, and had an extended outro. So much fun and a great way to end the concert. Better than stand up appearing in the encore

Overall, I had an amazing time, the crowd came around towards then end and provided some good energy. The numbers though were really sad, so Idk they will come back. I was able to get out of the parking though in 10 minutes, which was nice.

Hope you like the review and find it helpful.
