I know. It is ridiculous how much I sound like my father.

Edit: Curmudgeony is an awesome word. I may be including this quote in my sig.

I went with 2010. While I liked Animal Collective's record, I think Grizzly Bear and The Antlers' records are good but a bit overrated. I'll take The National, Arcade Fire, Tallest Man, and Sufjan over those albums any day.

30 second previews are the best way to understand an album.

so, I learned about ALOT of new awesome artists this year. Not all of them had albums this year, but I'm going with 2010.

God Willin' and the Creek Don't Rise ~ Ray LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs
Live, Vol 3. ~ Avett Brothers
All Delighted People EP ~ Sufjan Stevens
Sometimes the Blues is Just a Passing Bird ~ The Tallest Man on Earth

this has been one of the best years for discovering new artists for me and I just wanna Thank some of you guys for suggestions and what not. Big Ups to the Album of the Day Thread.

Yeah when I first starting posting on this site I listened to nothing but DMB and OAR and all that shit. Then I discovered the AOTD thread in 2005, and pretty much the rest is history. Every year I find more new artists and more new artists, until every year now there are like 50-75 albums I cannot wait to hear. Thats why over the years my listening to new stuff has increased, because I have been making so many new favorites while still trying out new bands. Beware it starts to snowball quickly.

Because Jonsi's album Go and Sufjan Stevens album Age of Adz and EP All Delighted People came out in 2010 then I must say 2010 > 2009.

I went a slightly different route (albeit one that I think is pretty common nowadays.) DMB introduced me to a lot of classic rock through covers (Grateful Dead's "Eyes of the World", Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses", Led Zeppelin's "Tangerine", etc) and I got into that for a long time. It was all Floyd, Dylan, Zep, Bowie, etc for a long time.

Once I was burned out from that stuff, I started looking for modern day artists that are sort of carrying that torch (all the folky stuff like Fleet Foxes, TMoE, Iron & Wine, Sufjan; the blues-rock - White Stripes, Black Keys; indie bands - Arcade Fire, The National, etc.)

But the Album of the Day thread has definitely brought people to my attention that I may not have noticed otherwise. Deerhunter, Jay Electronica, Grizzly Bear and others.

A lot of it is also reading about your favorite bands' influences and favorites, both past and present.

YES it definitely does. I didn't listen to a ton of different bands until like 2008. That AOTD thread has consumed me

If you just look at my RYM lists:

    2007: 25 albums
    2008: 25 albums
    2009: 31 albums
    2010: 78 albums

And a lot of those 2007 & 2008 records I discovered last year & this year. Definitely snowballs. Can't believe I've heard 78 different records this year

It's hard to get excited about a lot of the music these days, on account of how terrible the mastering is. Probably why so many of my favourite albums are from the 90's and late 80's, when CD's were mastered with full dynamics intact and lots of headroom...well, at least a LOT of them were.

Metallica's Death Magnetic averages 3dB of dynamic range.
Metallica's Master of Puppets averages 14dB of dynamic range.

What a difference it makes when you're listening on a good system.

Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine
    1989 CD - 13dB dynamic range average
    2010 CD - 6dB dynamic range average

    2009:

Animal Collective - Merriwether Post Pavilion
    Umphrey's McGee - Mantis
Dave Matthews Band - Big Whiskey

    2010:

Frightened Rabbit - The Winter of Mixed Drinks
Sufjan Stevens - Age of Adz
Tallest Man on Earth - The Wild Hunt

2009 has shifted a bit as time has gone on, but the ones I really like from 2010 beat out the ones I really like from 2009.

2009, and it's not even close. 2010 might be the bottom year since 2005 for me. As far as the two years head to head go, the top 10 of my 2010 doesn't compare to MPP/Veckatimest/Bromst in 2009. Three all-time albums for me, where I can't think of a single album this year that's in the same category.

Not gonna lie, seeing all these BWGK references again are bringing back feelings my of rage from last years result thread.

The album sucks, but the bias here is overwhelming.

The album sucks, but the bias here is overwhelming.
I love how whenever BW comes up you get all Why would you expect any different from www.antsmarching.org? (I mean come on at least I put it at #3 )

Like I said, things have changed since then. Manners gets more play, WA Phoenix gets more play, Fall Be Kind is in consistent rotation. But in June 2009 at the lowest point in my life, The GrooGrux King was all I had.

I pick 2009 because of Big Whiskey.

    What?

The only music in my itunes library from either of these years are big whiskey and a kid cudi album.

Gemini, The Suburbs and Winter of Mixed Drinks are better than anything put out in '09, IMO of course.

edit: Except maybe I and Love and You.

I know. I just figured after a year the fog would have cleared around BWGK and everybody would realize its a pretty boring/mediocre album that doesnt offer much in terms of what they're capable of as band. People just initially loved it because it came after SU, but come on guys, there really isn't anything remarkable about it aside from maybe 1-2 songs.
