I went a slightly different route (albeit one that I think is pretty common nowadays.) DMB introduced me to a lot of classic rock through covers (Grateful Dead's "Eyes of the World", Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses", Led Zeppelin's "Tangerine", etc) and I got into that for a long time. It was all Floyd, Dylan, Zep, Bowie, etc for a long time.
Once I was burned out from that stuff, I started looking for modern day artists that are sort of carrying that torch (all the folky stuff like Fleet Foxes, TMoE, Iron & Wine, Sufjan; the blues-rock - White Stripes, Black Keys; indie bands - Arcade Fire, The National, etc.)
But the Album of the Day thread has definitely brought people to my attention that I may not have noticed otherwise. Deerhunter, Jay Electronica, Grizzly Bear and others.
A lot of it is also reading about your favorite bands' influences and favorites, both past and present.
