Bus Monitor Verbally Assaulted by Middle Schoolers

This has been circulating around the news/internet all day, especially here in Rochester....

This video disturbed me, and shows in a nutshell that there's something seriously wrong with some kids now-a-days. These kids were ruthless to this old woman, and she just sat there and took it (and cried of course).

I had a hard time getting through the whole video, ended up fast forwarding through the last minute and a half or so. The sad thing is, working in a school district, this doesn't surprise me. I'm surprised at how extremely harsh these kids were, but I've seen things like this on a lesser scale from time to time.

Schools/kids aren't what they used to be.

The kids names were released and the school district (Greece, Rochester, NY) was trying to cover this up and get it off the internet before it went viral. I've seen the names of the students in the description of some of the YouTube links as well.

I have the feeling that this isn't going to end well, both for the school district, in terms of awful, awful publicity, and the students involved, as I feel like the punishment needs to be and will be much worse now that the country (and other parts of the world) are seeing this video and will be paying more attention to what happens to them.

Gotta make an example of these little shits. I know they're somebody's babies, but when kids get together in groups they can get downright sadistic at times. All kids bully a little, but this is extreme and it can't be tolerated. Sucks for the monitor because there's nothing she can do about it. If she fires back with harsh words of her own she's suddenly at risk of crossing a line / losing her job / etc. Usually the more worked up a person gets the funnier it gets to the kids and it encourages them to continue for more reaction. But the fact that she just sits there and they keep going anyway shows how disconnected these kids are from human empathy. Plus she's like a grandmother. WTF? How can they be so degrading to a grandma? Is porn to blame for this

i'm weird too, because usually when something like this arises, i show some sympathy for the person who is doing the wrong thing being that they made a mistake and now their life is ruined, but i honestly have no sympathy whatsoever in this situation for those douchebags. unreal.

Schools/kids aren't what they used to be.

Kids have always been cruel. I think there's been a lot of effort put into stopping bullying among kids (the presence of bus monitors, for example) in recent years. It's not as easy/appropriate to harass a random nerd or gay kid, so these kids used this poor woman (unable to retaliate in any way) as an outlet for their shittiness.

It's horrible, but w/ stories like this, I don't buy that people are inherently worse than they used to be; the ways people express their shittiness have changed.

Pack mentality in kids I guess. I am assuming these kids are outspoken pieces of shit and would start on anyone who said something to them. I know this can happen anywhere, but this is why I moved out of Greece before my daughter started Kindergarten. School system there is shitty and getting worse.

I don't think it would have mattered who was sitting there. The kids know they are in charge, you can't touch them. Anything you say or do to them could be twisted and the parents slap a law suit on the school. The answer is to hold kids accountable and kick them out of the bussing system. Let them walk for the rest of their school day's including to and from any sporting events if the join any.

You don't need the threat of violence to control a group of kids. You need immediate assertiveness. Let the kids know, immediately, that they are NOT in charge. Have the bus driver stop the damn bus until you regain control.

I agree 100%. If there was nothing they could do why would they even have that position? There's obviously some protocol they should go by to assert themselves.

The most hurtful thing she felt was when they told her something like "you're so fat and ugly that your kids should kill themselves". Apparently her son did actually take his own life 10 years ago.

Gotta disagree. She can't really do anything in that situation. What is she supposed to do? You can't use corporal punishment in school anymore. She can't yell at them in any sort of way that will get them to stop and she can't kick them off the bus in the middle of driving home.

I don't know why someone always has to blame the victim in this situation but I guess if you're going to then okay. Could she have handled it differently, sure. But let's not steer away from the fact that the kids are the real pieces of shit here.

Then why does that job exist?

And you can't kick them off the bus, but I remember clearly in grade school the bus driver would turn around and take kids back to school to the principal if they were doing far less worse things than that. That was the typical punishment for acting up on the bus (at least where I'm from).

Action could've been taken and she just sat there.

EDIT: I'm obviously not taking away blame from the kids..they do suck. But it's not like nothing could've been done as people are saying.
