An 04-ish album woulda been sweet ... less Stand Up ...

Sugar Will
Crazy Easy
Kill the King
Good Good Time
Idea of You
Eh Hee
Can't Stop
Cornbread
Break Free
Joy Ride
Loving Wings

What happened? Batson? Some written with DMB and Friends? Band just didn't think an album version would do the song justice??

Can't Stop is solid!!!

In any event .. if Eh Hee and Cornbread are the two worst songs on the album in your opinion ... it'd be a nice album

The songs in bold were not written during or before the Stand Up sessions.

Also, it's not Baston's choice to tell the band what songs they want on the album. Baston's mix and such weren't great, and his production values left more to be desired, but it's the Band's decision on what songs are on the album.

Batson has little say as to what goes on the album. He can influence their decisions but Dave and Co. have the final say. I agree, those songs would have made sooo much better of an album (despite a few decent tracks when performed live).

Re: An 04-ish album woulda been sweet ... less Stand Up ...

1) Prelude (7/10/04 style)>
2) Crazy Easy
3) Sweet Up And Down
4) Hello Again
5) Sugar Will
6) Joy Ride (w/ no organ)
7) Loving Wings
8) Light Lift Me Up
9) Gas Into Fire (reworked and longer)
10) Water Into Wine
11) Butterfly
12) Good Good Time

^This album, produced by someone like Lillywhite or Lillywhite himself, would be Big 4 material IMO.

Ok, that's one bad song, in your opinion.

That album would blow Stand Up, BW, and Everyday out of the water.

Crazy-Easy should 100% be on an album.

I honestly think the bands biggest weakness on recent albums has been a lack of road tested material; thats where these boys really dig into tunes, and work out arrangements, etc. I too, think an '04/'06ish album would have been great and I think moving away from the '04 songs was one of the biggest mistakes this band ever made. Could you imagine if we never got SU, and the band released an album of Crazy Easy, Sugar Will, GGT, Joy Ride, Break Free, IOY, Shotgun, Kill The King, etc... circa 2007? Everyday would have been the lone sore spot for studio DMB and I think the overall demeanor of the fan base would be much different.

Re: An 04-ish album woulda been sweet ... less Stand Up ...

IMO, Everyday can NOT be looked at as a sore spot. It was a different approach from the band (poppy, catchy tunes).... But if you look at what is now valued by the fans, the Everyday album gave us:

Space Between
So Right
Sleep to Dream Her
Everyday
What You Are
When The World Ends
If I Had It All
Fool To Think

I'm not saying I'm the biggest fan of any of these songs, but the group consensus is that all of these are welcome in a Live setting above many tunes from Stand Up (especially) and Big Whiskey (which I think gets hate because many songs are 'overplayed', as the diehards say)...

I have been saying this for years. This, more than Lillywhite producing, is what made the early records great — many of those songs were written, recorded and played hundreds of times for audiences before Lillywhite ever touched them.

It's also infuriating. They play a batch of songs for an entire summer and get you primed for those and then they're mostly not on the next record.

Although in the case of Corn Bread, that's not really a bad thing.

IOY, shotgun, kill the king, break free, eh hee, cornbread... these are 06/07 songs... not 04 (the band may have had them around in 04 or the idea of them, but nothing would have come to pass)

Eh, Eh Hee is better than half the songs on Stand up, Big Whiskey or Everyday. Cornbread is better than the worst third on those albums. Can't stop is better than.... Hunger for the great light?

Re: An 04-ish album woulda been sweet ... less Stand Up ...

it's pretty frustrating to see what was recording during the stand up sessions and what could have been on the album. for example:

This would be my idea of a great album from stuff that has not been released.

1. Sweet Up and Down
2. Crazy Easy
3. Loving Wings
4. Joy Ride
5. Shotgun
6. Round and Round -->
7. Kill The King
8. Idea of You
9. Hello Again
10. Beach Ball
11. Monkey Man (Water into Wine Outro) -->
12. Light Lift Me Up (Loving Wings Reprise Outro)

I understand where you're coming from, but the issuethat a llot of fans have with everyday is that the songs never really matured to the point they should have,a llot of people have everyday songs on their bucket list , but they played that album to fucking death over the far superior and beloved aborted sessions for a long damn time

Re: An 04-ish album woulda been sweet ... less Stand Up ...

i've been saying this for years. there has been so much (at one point) 'new material' that has been turned into 'live only'... its a shame because we've probably missed 2 great DMB studio albums because of it. Its horrible they tarnished "Hello Again" by putting it on Stand Up -it didn't deserve that.
