Question about the Military

Here is my deal.
My boyfriend and I recently found out we are having a baby. He currently does not have a job, and does not know what to do with his life. I work as a temp at a big company and will not receive any paid maternity leave.
He thinks he can join the military and they will take care of me, him and the baby. He thinks this is the best option, instead of working 2 $10/hr jobs. I told him its not that easy, and I would prefer to struggle to make ends meet together, than be alone raising a baby, while he's off in the military. He said if we get married they will pay for housing and other living expenses. I think hes wrong. Anyone in a similar situation, or know anyone in the same situation? I am clueless about the military and everything that goes with it. He is going to talk to a recruiter this week, and I think they are going to be like salesman- telling him everything he wants to hear so he will sign up. <----me

Re: Question about the Military

i hope everything goes well katie

with that said, nothing is easy, especially with a baby. your boyfriend needs to start working HARD. my husband is out of the house everyday by 7 am, and doesn't come home until 7:30-8pm, and this is a salary job! life is hard only if you allow it to be a struggle...sometimes you have to suck it up and do what is best overall instead of trying to find a quick fix.

much peace to the 3 of you.

The Military will certainly take care of that.

Re: Question about the Military

I don't want to sound like an ass, but why are you having a baby when you're obviously not financially stable?

The military is a decent option, but you'd have to be married, and don't you fear him going off to Iraq or Afghanistan? After boot camp, you can probably live on the base with subsidized housing.

Here's some info about Army benefits:

mmhmmmm...pretty much every guy i have met still need some growing up to do
i believe that if it wasn't for women, men would just fall apart . time for you to take control of the situation...say to him, what if you get sent off to iraq, and then don't come back...lot of help that is going to do me.

if he wanted to join the military because he believes in protecting this country and what it stands for, by all means go. but i think going through the military is going to be a lot more difficult then working 60+ hours a week!

I know this. The main thing is that I dont want to be alone. I know thousands of wives and children are in this situation. I think he needs someone to tell him that the military wont take care of his responsibilities. Oye

I do not believe in abortion. Everyone has their opinion and that is mine. It was a mistake.

Re: Question about the Military

Ah, I see. No, I never said you had to get an abortion.
Good luck on everything, and I hope it all works out.

Remember, don't believe anything the recruiter says unless it's in writing!

Whats the difference between getting a pay check and health benefits from the military and a regular Job?

You can quit the regular job if they try to transfer you to their offices in Tikrit?

We talked about adoption, but we both have large families and we are blessed with their support and love, and we can do a great job being parents.
My mom have every reason in the book to have an abortion and put me up for adoption, but she didnt because my grandparents and extended family were supportful and I love her more than anything in the world. I know I can be the same mom to my child

My point is the Military is not "picking up the tab" he would be earning a paycheck just like at a regular job.

Re: Question about the Military

Joining the military would be a good thing, if he wants to go.

1.) It'll get his ass in shape
2.) It'll mature him quickly
3.) He'll be earning money to support the new wife and child

What about the Coast Guard? It's still one of the Armed Forces, and he'd probably stay stateside.

Right- is that what a GI bill is? He thinks he will get this, as well as housing paid for...and other things. I just want to throw facts in his face when I get home.
