Most romantic, spiritual, and inspirational moments during DMB concert.

Hey, everyone. I just saw my 27th DMB concert at Bethel Woods, and I also was at N2 at Jones Beach. I pulled out some B&P disks this week, and I've been listening to the two shows I experienced in 2006 (29Jul06 & 06Aug06). I've been thinking about the most beautiful moments I have been lucky to experience live, and I really wanted to hear about all of your experiences as well.

For example, I've been listening to Sleep to Dream Her and LIOG (w/ Bela) from Randall's Island, and #41 (w/ Warren) from the Meadows. These moments practically defy description. Other recent examples I can think of are the Intro to Listener Supported (although I was not there), and Seek Up and Linus & Lucy from the Meadows on 27Aug00 (Live Trax 3, I was there for that). Then there's the Bartender I heard at SPAC on 28Jul02 - LeRoi's outro is absolutely lovely, and I think of this as the inspiration behind N3 at Berkeley last summer (which was breathtaking). Even some outros to Busted Stuff during the Summer 2000 tour... I know there are many more examples, but I'm still collecting recordings of the concerts I've been to since 1999.

As you can imagine I'm having an introspective week... so I'd really love to hear your thoughts. Yesterday I accidentally found a brief review posted by a guy at the DMB concert on 29Jul06, who kissed his girlfriend during one song and "never looked back." I can't wait to hear about all of the times like that at DMB concerts; the date and venue, the song that was playing, and what you did and/or felt at the time. LeRoi and Carter are my favourite members of the band, and I especially used to like when Butch and LeRoi would duet with Carter in the background. So, I'm curious to hear about any inspiring solos with those guys as well.

I thought I'd check in on Monday, and see what all of you think. I hope everyone has a fun weekend!

Gorge N1 last year. Opening with Bartender the first show after LeRoi's funeral. Brought me to tears. As did the glowstick shower before #41.

Thank you. That's just what I'm looking for.

Like I said, Bartender from N3 at Berkeley was like that... Bubbles drifting towards the stage from the crowd, smoke creeping out from the stage, clouds blowing in from the ocean, and Dave standing at the very edge of the stage watching it all. I swear Roi was there with us.

Re: Most romantic, spiritual, and inspirational moments during DMB concert.

Romantic - I've been to 20 shows now. Ten of them with five different women. I've been dating the girl I'm with for two years now, and honest to God - through all the 41's, 40's, Crushs', Lover Lay Downs - the most romantic (at least for me) moment was this year N2 Alpine, You And Me. I didn't really like the song going in, but during it - it struck me. I looked at her and realized I was going to spend the rest of my life with her. I didn't need to explain why to her - or give her fluffy reasons, we just knew it was going to be me and her.

Spiritual - My first, and only Lie In Our Graves - which till this day (batteling with Last Stop) is my all-time untouchable favorite song. Alpine N1 2005 - a large group of us went (around 20) from my hometown, and the weekend was a blast. I was standing with two of my good good friends - one of them just starting to get into DMB a lot. Big fan now. He turned to me after Smooth Rider, and said - "It's time for some Lie In Our Graves, eh?" - He knew it was my favorite song. I, being a DMB show contosuierre, shrugged it off, smiled and said - yeah that'd be nice. The opening riff struck, and I was in awe. I've been in awe for this song, Last Stop, and Halloween - very rare for me to be that "struck" over a song. First time it was played that year.....I remember just starring at Boyd, the entire time he played his solo, not saying a word, just feeling as if nothing in the world could ever stop this moment.

Inspirational - This one is simple - any Pig I have seen. The song, for me at least, in a live setting - is the most inspirational piece of work the band has ever wrote. And when the crowd is pounding, "Don't BEAT YOUR HEAD - DRY YOUR EYEEEEES" I still get chills to this day.

Re: Most romantic, spiritual, and inspirational moments during DMB concert.

A recent emotional moment for me, was Jeff's Say Goodbye intro this past Saturday (Deer Creek N2). I don't know how to describe it, and I know it is not the first time it has been played since Roi's death, but I felt like he was there.

And for me, Boyd's solo during Seek Up gets me every time.

You are a very lucky man, indeed. Sadly, I have the opposite - the only time I heard Sugar Will, and I knew it was over.
I think I've taken four girls with me, now.... I've had a lot of great love songs, but for one reason or another I've never had that epiphany. None of them ever got it - I think it's hard to find someone who truly understands. I'm hoping I find "her" and take her to a venue neither of us have been to before, and then hear Loving Wings together. I've only heard it once, and luckily I didn't have a date. At least in my mind, that's gotta be a great way to have my epiphany.

Your LIOG story is great, dude.

Very nice. That's what's great about our DMB moments... I think for many of us, when we tell each other about it, we don't need to quantify it with many words. The right people will just get it - and, probably, wish they were there to experiance it, too.

Re: Most romantic, spiritual, and inspirational moments during DMB concert.

I have experienced a lot of spiritual moments during DMB concerts over the years, so it's hard to pinpoint one. The best way to describe it is a natural high from the music alone - probably what a lot of churchgoers feel when they here certain gospel songs. When I first read your thread title though, the immediate thought I had was the first show of this year at MSG when the crowd just started chanting "LeRoi." I know they still do it after Why I Am now, but at the time, his death and them launching a full tour without him was really fresh in everyone's mind. The band was about to play a song when the chants started. They held off and just took it in for a minute or so. I think Dave maybe even said "thank you" afterwards. It was really moving. I know it's not a musical moment, but it was cool thing to be a part of.

Re: Most romantic, spiritual, and inspirational moments during DMB concert.

LIOG reprise 9-2-07. My Wife had never got LIOG until 8-31-07 and was totally bummed that they didn't finish the song. I half expected the reprise on Sunday, but she had no idea and though she had just missed out again. It was pure joy to watch her face light up when the full band came out during the encore to break into the second half of the song. It was probably like watching myself the first time I heard the intro to Crush in 01 or the intro #41 for the first time.

I definitely remember that! It was an awesome moment.

For me I guess "spiritual" would have to be the very first note of my very first show, which happened to be the opening to #41. Not only has that been my favorite song since I first heard it back when I bought Crash in '96, but as I found out later it was not a song that was played with great frequency (this was back in 2005). I really truly thought my life was complete at that very moment, seeing the guys play for the first time and the first song they played was my favorite.

As far as "inspirational," the LeRoi chant at MSG in April certainly ranks, but I'd have to say the moment the guys walked on stage at the Beacon Theatre. You all saw it on tv, Dave came out and did his walkabout the stage, taking in the space and looking at it all in some kind of wonder. You may have even heard our screams from your speakers, but unless you were there you can't truly get what it was like to be in that room. I have never been in a room so loud that I could feel the sound bouncing off the walls and making my feet shake. To say that theatre was electrified would be an understatement. I almost didn't even want the show to start; I just wanted to soak in the buzz of our energy mixing with that of those seven men on stage.

The recordings I have of Busted Stuff are from the Meadows on 26Aug00 with LeRoi, and 11Jul00 at Giants Stadium with the Lovely Ladies. Everytime I hear those outros, it makes me think of a warm summer night outdoors.

Re: Most romantic, spiritual, and inspirational moments during DMB concert.

For me the most emotional is the first time I heard 41 live. It took me 11 shows to finally hear it and I was waiting for the next song and said to myself, "come on 41", then i heard those first chords and was floored.

There was also the first time I heard Why I Am at C-Ville N2 this year. I had made a point not to listen to the tapes from MSG or IZOD so things would be completely fresh. I remember the crowd was so loud each time Dave said "GrooGrux King". Then he sang the lines in my sig and I was really overcome. I remember it took about two weeks before I could listen to Why I Am without my eyes watering.

Re: Most romantic, spiritual, and inspirational moments during DMB concert.

Another one for me, emotional I suppose, but everytime I hear the studio version of the Last Stop reprise, I kind of lose myself. It takes me back to the summer of 98, and some rough times that my family was going through back then, and there was something so very comforting about the music and those words.

edit: sorry, I realize this is not a live DMB moment, but a moment nonetheless...

Re: Most romantic, spiritual, and inspirational moments during DMB concert.

The first thing that jumped into my mind was watching the Seek Up intro from the Louisville show last year. I waited in line all day and sprinted on to the GA field to be front row center...I never thought I'd be able to say I saw Dave Matthews Band front row center, especially without having to pay a ton of money for the ticket. That whole day was pretty surreal to me (bumping into Jeff Coffin, getting a setlist that was taped to the stage after the show), but as I sat there and watched Jeff, Rashawn, and Carter just nail that intro it gave me a feeling I've never felt at a concert before.

Wow, just on Wed I was telling someone how whenever I hear Last Stop, I imagine the studio version on BTCS and how it slowly faded away into DDTW. 1998 was basically the last year of the best period of my life, so this album and Crash are really special to me...

I hope your family pulled through your tough times from that summer, and you look back from a much happier place in your life.

Re: Most romantic, spiritual, and inspirational moments during DMB concert.

My first Ants. 7/11/08. Singing "people in every direction..." is second to none at a DMB show, and the Ants outro just froze me.

Bartender opening up Phoenix in 08 was something I'll always remember, 4 days after Roi died, the band still visibly emotional and no song resonated with me more that night than Bartender.

Phoenix 5/6/09 sitting 11th row (closest I've ever been) and watching in awe as they played probably the best show I've ever seen, got my first Warehouse (albeit a Nancies-->Warehouse) and Watchtower that night. Seeing this band up close is a damn crazy experience and especially a show like that completely blew me away. http://dmbalmanac.com/TourShowSet.as...103&where=2009

Alpine N2. 40,000+ singing Thank You while the band was backstage. Say what you want about the song but I'll never forget how cool that was, and then my first Halloween just minutes later. Amazing.

2004 Gorge N1....

A couple in our group decided that they wanted to get married during the Gorge. They originally wanted to have the wedding at the venue and tried to contact the band/mgt. to see if that could happen. Unfortunately it couldn't due to set-up, soundcheck, etc so they had the wedding at our campground. However, the band hadn't forgotten their special day.

In 2006 I went on a binge where I listened to One Sweet World like 4,387 (approx ) times that year. And when I went to my second show ever at Deer Creek on 6.3.06 that was the opener, so I was very happy to say the least.

Re: Most romantic, spiritual, and inspirational moments during DMB concert.

Most emotional concert for me is LeRoi's passing. I remember that concert so vividly. My girlfriend and I showed up to the show a little early and we overheard people talking about LeRoi, I couldnt really hear what people were saying but the person in front of me told me and I was starting to cry, I was so overwhelmed. I didn't want to believe it. Then the show started, Bartender came on and I lost it. Seeing Carters face and not seeing that big smile on his face was something else. I was singing, crying so many emotions throughout that whole concert.

Oh, wow... *sigh* That must've been amazing - I hope someone captured the look on their faces.

Someone on here has a signature where Dave made custom lyrics during a show (Good , Good Time) for his sister's birthday in 2004.

A guy proposed to his girlfriend at N2 at Berkeley last summer - even had a plane fly overhead with a proposal message. He was only like 10 feet from me... Dave actually noticed and I think said something during the show.

Re: Most romantic, spiritual, and inspirational moments during DMB concert.

Romantic (sort of): I took a girl to Riverbend last year who I had liked for a loooong time. I decided that night would be make or break for us, and I was secretly hoping they'd play Crush (special meaning)... which they did. But I remember the night instead for Halloween, in which Dave added these lyrics: "I wanted to love you more than you could ever know!" Things didn't work out between us, thanks for putting a voice to my emotion Dave.

Spiritual: My 2nd show was N2 of Red Rocks in 05... the band opened with a 20+ minute Seek Up under a clear Colorado evening. I certainly felt that God was there with us in that moment.

Inspirational: An earlier poster mentioned the "Leroi" chants after Why I Am at MSG this year. I was there and it was deafening and incredible. But I think the coolest part might be what happened next: DMB played arguably their three most "classic" and IMO inspirational songs in a row. Ants, #41, Two Step.

Things didn't work out between us, thanks for putting a voice to my emotion Dave.
OMG - just read your signature... if it's regarding the same night, it makes your story even better! Must've blown your mind to hear that extra lyric on such a night, man. Sorry it wasn't foreshadowing something special with that girl, though.

EDIT - I stupidly passed-up a chance to see that show at Red Rocks, too. Funny, just talked about that with my sis last night...

I didn't want to believe it. Then the show started, Bartender came on and I lost it. Seeing Carters face and not seeing that big smile on his face was something else. I was singing, crying so many emotions throughout that whole concert.
19Aug - less than two weeks now... I can only imagine the profound emotion in the venue that night. I probably would have cried there as well.

Re: Most romantic, spiritual, and inspirational moments during DMB concert.

I had been back from my second tour in Iraq for about a month and was having a much harder time re-adjusting than I did the first time, which was mainly due to it being a much worse experience as far as buddies getting killed or maimed goes.

I hit up Beantown for the '06 Fenway shows and completely broke down during the Last Stop Reprise:

Come in from the cold for a while,
Everything will be all right
Come in from the noise for a time,
Everything will be alright
Everything will be alright
For now, goodbye
Friend, goodbye

I've been at peace ever since.

Yeah it was probably the most emotional 2 night stand I will ever have. August 20 was a rollercoaster.

Most romantic for me was Lover Lay Down last year at Deer Creek 7-25-08, I love that song and finally hearing it with my girl was beautiful. Til we dance away....

Wow incredible story man, thanks for sharing and especially for serving!

Last Stop Reprise might be the most beautiful music these guys have written. Love the contrast following Last Stop ("if hate's the gate to peace...")

Yeah, it was a rollercoaster ride. I remember being so angry about everything during the song and then the reprise came and I felt like going through the storm of the main song was necessary for me to get it all out.

I've had some inspirational/emotional/romantic moments at shows since 1995, but whenever anyone asks me about the one defining moment, that's the one.

THANK YOU FOR SERVING FOR US!

That's pretty heavy isht, man. Honestly, when I thought about making this thread I never even dreamed of a response like that. Geeze, I don't think I can even relate to that emotion at all... Thanks again, and I'm glad you found the key you needed to break free.
