Re: Setlist check

I don't get it. Do you mean they have to check their setlist b/c they are not playing songs that they originally are supposed to?

I'm pretty he's complaining because he thinks the set lists suck.

what, you don't like 3/4ths of BWGGK being played every night?

I don't think that's his problem. It's unreasonable to expect anything else on an album tour IMO. It's what they choose to play in the other 10 slots that makes or breaks these shows.

I'm fine with the BWGK songs each night, but I agree that they need to start coming up with more inventive setlists outside of those tunes. Also, they need to stop debuting a song and then shelving it after one or two plays. The fact that Typical and Jane haven't stuck around from the first leg outright sucks. Warehouse made its return 7 shows ago and hasn't been heard from since; the same can be said for Recently, but with far more shows since it's one and only play. BOWA has gotten a whopping two plays all summer. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Say Goodbye and I'll Back You Up don't show up on another setlist this summer.

Bottom line -- the songs DMB is bringing back are excellent, but they should be coming back into rotation, not just making a one time appearance and then disappearing forever.

I originally posted the quote the OP uses (Thanks OP!) right after
Jones Beach N1. I felt it was a weak set besides the Whiskey songs
which we all expected to hear. I think N2 was nice, and feel there have been some strong sets as the tour has moved forward.

Umm let me just correct you. First of all, the Talking Heads are the fucking shit. If you unaware of this fact go watch their live DVD Stop Making Sense. Second, have you heard them do the cover? I'd say its pretty darn fun and the band really gets into it. Third, in response to what is in bold, i'll take Burning down the house over everything on Stand Up, almost everything on Everyday and even some other older songs 50 times out of 10.

The Talking Heads' status as an iconic band has absolutely nothing to do with this argument. I love plenty of bands that I would never, ever want to see DMB cover. As far as BTDH's status as a song in the rotation, it's a decent cover at best. It's better than alot of the newer songs DMB has chosen to cover, but it's not as good as many of DMB's older cover songs.

And the post you're quoting never said that BDTH wasn't better than alot of what's on Stand Up or Everyday, but rather that there are numerous classic DMB tunes that he'd rather see. I agree with him. When so many great DMB songs have gone unplayed, it's incredibly disappointing that this song steals a setlist spot away from the songs that made us fans of DMB. I don't know about you, but when I pay to see a band, I want to see that band's songs over a bunch of covers.

I can think of at least 20 unplayed DMB songs that I'd like to see come back before BDTH gets another play.

Re: Setlist check

Problem last year as well as this year is that they are debuting songs for the tour, but they only get played 1 or 2 shows and disappear. The same songs are in the rotation then they'll throw in a debut for proudest monkey, bowa, say goodbye, etc.

Problem this year is there has been no real rarity factor. Last year rare songs that came into play were Halloween and #40...but theyre still there this year. Nothing new has come on that front.

They should bust out more WH, Say Goodbye, Raven, YNK, IBYU, Busted Stuff, Last Stop, Captain, etc. Switch it uppp

Re: Setlist check

You all really need to quit your bitching about the setlists. They play way they want to play and take occasional suggestions. It shouldn't be any other way...plain and simple. A lot of people are over looking the fact that its an album tour and regardless have you all forgotten about Shotgun? Whether you like that song or not it takes out lot out of Dave to play it but he does because people want to hear it. These arguments are as pointless as the ones with people complaining about Dave introducing songs before the band plays them.

1. When did you become a fan?

2. How does Shotgun "take a lot out of Dave to play"?

You're confusing "bitching" and commenting. I loved last years tour and have enjoyed my shows this year. Simply commenting on what they're doing.

Re: Setlist check

I like BDTH, but I don't think they should be soundchecking Sledgehammer and Solsbury Hill. Pick 1 or 2 and play them, at a show you can hear anything from Solsbury, BDTH, Maker, Rye Whiskey, or Watchtower and IMO that is too many covers for an album tour.

This is the first time that I have heard this. When did Dave say this, or is it an assumption?

What does any of that have to do with the fact that your comment was in response to the poster's desire to hear classic DMB songs instead of BDTH?

Oh, and it's "they," not "he" -- DMB is a band, not a person.

Thats my biggest pet peeve when people talk about the band. It's THE Dave Matthews Band, not his band.

Re: Setlist check

I just went to the VA run and got 7 new songs at my 2nd show. That is just simply not enough. They played Grey Street, You Might Die Trying, LIOG, and Crash from older albums. I understand repeats of Big Whiskey songs but not older songs. I love LIOG and Grey Street but I would rather hear something different.
