What qualities must a person have to be deemed your friend?

I know the generic ones are loyalty, trustworthy, and nice. But, sometimes let's face it, those aren't enough. What qualities do you think a person needs beyond that to be considered a friend that you would hang out with?

For me they not only need to be the three listed above but be able to hold conversations with people they haven't met before and not be a huge dick to them. Also, friends who aren't lazy as fuck and expect things to come to them or not like going out to hang out because it requires them to get out (a.k.a stop being lazy).

Intelligent and interesting. Need to share some hobbies. Similar world views, political views etc. helps, as I don't need friends I'm constantly getting in heated arguments with.

Somewhat acceptable taste in music. I have friends that lack that - and we don't hang out all that often. For example, a girl that will put roughly $20 worth of Madonna onto a jukebox at any bar we're at. Not OK.

I actually like having friends that have differeing political or religious views than I do AS LONG AS, I can't stress that enough, they are open minded enough to respect my beliefs and have a civil discussion about them.

Definitely someone that I can consistently hold a conversation with on a variety of different topics. Taking at least some level of interest in movies is a bonus, but not essential. And most of all, someone who doesn't tell me only the things I want to hear, but also uncomfortable truths because they are only trying to do what's best for me.

otherwise intelligence, a good sense of humor, and similar interests are all good things. I'd also prefer that they're not shy and are outgoing.

Respect and honesty, pretty much.

Also one thing I can't stand is people who have to constantly one up you, or cut you off to tell THEIR story, or if they even have one tiny little fragment of info/experience on something, they become an expert.

I hate the people who say they understand sarcasm and get it, but after a little bit they get mad and take a personal shot at you. I have a friend like that. I have a very dry sense of humor and sarcasm is very important to me. And he knows that. But after a little bit of it he gets defensive and says something meant to make me mad. I just look at him and tell him to calm down.
