Re: ABI vs. Blue Water
Differences in song structure:
Guitar
------
ABI -A 4 single note pattern repeated the entire time.
Blue Water - two chords an Em and a C repeated until the jam where a set of single notes (which is similar to ABI in the fact that it is 4 single notes) is played.
Lyrics
-----
ABI - one phrase uttered and screamed
Blue Water - the lyrics set the background for the story (a person who wants to end their life), an action which is carried out by the violin. Incredibly descriptive and chilling words, very poetic.
Violin
-----
ABI - great violin riff that is mostly repeated the entire time.
Blue Water - The acts described in the lyrics are carried out by the way Boyd plays. It starts out soft, slow, creepy (the person contemplating the act). It then builds and builds until the solo reaches its height where it comes crashing down signifying that the person described in the song has gone through with the act. Incredibly powerful and incredibly moving. He most definitely doesn't play the same riff the entire time, many times using complete octaves while playing.
In Conclusion
-------------
There really is no comparison. I enjoy ABI, but I look at it as like much of Stand Up, a demo of what could have been. If ABI had lyrics as intense as Blue Water, then this might be a different conversation.
The only similarity between the two is the 4 note structure of ABI and Blue Water's jam and the fact that both build into high energy songs. I would argue though, that higher energy doesnt make a superior song. It can actually be quite the contrary.
