Danny Barnes Talks "Pizza Box" with antsmarching.org

To the Dave Matthews Band fan, Danny Barnes seemingly came out of nowhere to burst upon the scene with his unique style of banjo playing. In reality, the 47 year old musician has a long career of performing on movie soundtracks, and has been a "musician's musician" for over 15 years. His latest release, Pizza Box, is available right now on Amazon and iTunes.

Matt, Joe, and Jake had an opportunity to have a conversation with Danny to talk a wide variety of things; from his musical styles to his philosophy in music and life, as well as how he came to meet Dave Matthews and eventually guest with the band. It's every easy to hear why Barnes is so likable, he's just a down to earth music fan who's living out his dream, performing music up on stage that he loves. Have a listen below and find out for yourself why everyone loves Danny Barnes.

it's tough to listen to him talk. he's making it sound like he just put out the greatest, most thoughtful album in the history of music

Does anyone look at that cover art for the album and get the same feel to it as Big Whiskey? Does anyone know if Dave Matthews had anything to do with that artwork?

Dave Matthews drew the album artwork for Barnes, but as of yet I've heard no details on how that came about. If I hear anything new, I'll post or put a link up.

Wow, really? Sounds to me like he's an extremely hard working artist who is simply proud of his work.

i'm sure he is proud of his work, and he should be if he made it.

it just came accross like a late night infomercial or something.

i think so too, i wish dmb would have put that much effort into each and every single note of their album. it sounds like he worked really hard on it

he totally comes off down to earth... I could see it at Gorge that he was extreamly greatful of the chance of playing at the Gorge.

did you bring up the fact that, totally, no one preordered his album and ask why they refused to send out any of the autographed copies?

I met Danny at SEA-TAC airport on Monday morning following the Gorge weekend -- what a great guy! Pizza Box is a pretty good listen, too, IMO.

is this true? this is one of the reasons i didnt cancel my preorder...

i coulda just bought the album on itunes and missed out on the musictoday shipping charges had i known that!

figured since everyone else cancelled their preorders i had a shot at actually receiving an autographed copy of something for once in my life.

love the album though. bonus disc aint bad either.

Cool interview. Danny seems like a really cool guy and he really impressed me when I saw him at Phoenix last year. He looked like he was having a blast and the band seemed to be loving him.

I was pleasantly surprised at how good pizza box is. Not my genre of music, but its worth a listen.

Exactly my thoughts. Furthering the case that Danny has created his own genre, or at least deprecated the use of the term altogether!

Dave designed the artwork for the cover, and guests on a few tracks. Rashawn guests too, along with Matt Chamberlain.

My copy is supposed to get in tonight or tomorrow.. can't wait to get it in!

Danny is a great guy!

Re: Danny Barnes Talks "Pizza Box" with antsmarching.org

i've listened to a good part of the album and i just don't see how anyone can say he created his own genre. there's not one song on there that sounds inventive or unique.

not an insult to him, i didn't say it was bad (though i'm not a fan) just saying i don't see how it is groundbreaking

Interesting interview. Sounds like a nice guy. He repeated himself a lot, and stuff like that, but maybe that's just the way he is.

Listened to his album, didn't really enjoy it too much, nothing really stuck out to me. Although, glad I got the opportunity to listen to it from his website.

Re: Danny Barnes Talks "Pizza Box" with antsmarching.org

Danny's a great guy. Have talked and exchanged emails multiple times with him - he's a very gracious man and easy to talk to and communicate with (even as just a fan). Little known fact about the new album - Boyd let him borrow a guitar for this album that Danny uses on several tracks (He plays very distinct notes, but admits to not being a great guitarist). I know that Rashawn recorded a lot of harmonizing background vocals, but don't think it was used in post-production.

Sadly though, as I have recently (last week) suffered from a Hard Drive crash (which everything I bought on the I-Tunes store was not put on my Extrernal with my 18,000 + songs - including Pizza Box, Big Whiskey EP, Sad Man Happy Man and around 18 other albums) I am now searching for....

GASP

A torrent version of Pizza Box, because - well...I don't want to pay 10 dollars again.

Can't the iTunes store give you everything you bought through them again?

I pre-ordered this based on "Dave's" glowing review. I actually think its pretty good. Not a bad listen at all. So what's this about not sending out any autographed copies? I think they said they were supposed to go out randomly in the preorders.
