Pearl Jam live blows live DMB away

Before you get started, this isn't one of those "is Matt Cameron better than Carter" or "is Tim better than Mike" threads...

I just got home from the PJ show at the Spectrum, and while I am riding the high, I couldn't help but think how committed those six guys were to making the audience enjoy the show. Now I love live DMB, but the performance by PJ tonight and most of the recent years I've seen them blew away anything I've seen from DMB since CP. Anyone agree?

Re: Pearl Jam live blows live DMB away

Pearl Jam is 500x better to their fans than DMB is. Especially the Ten Club compared to the WH.

Their live shows are just different animals.

I will say this, music aside, Pearl Jam has more of a connection with it's fan than DMB ever will.

Honestly I am as big of a PJ fan as you will find on these boards and DMB sounds better live. There really is no contest. PJ is unreal though.

I would agree that DMB sounds cleaner live...Pearl Jam speeds a lot of their stuff up, but I actually enjoy that. But Eddie makes so much of an effort to connect with the fans, he pays very close attention to every venue he goes into to be specific with the crowd, and even if that's bullshit, 95% of the people, including myself, eat it up.

They are a group that truly knows why they are where they are. And while I think DMB knows that too, I think they're (by they're I mean Dave) sometimes too stubborn to take it into account.

Fair enough but I go to shows for the band and the music. I went to a Green Day show and they had people from the crowd come up and play music with them. That doesn't mean I'm going to make a thread about them blowing DMB and PJ out of the water.

It is really not even close. I will have seen PJ 7 times after this week. DMB is a much better live band.

Well based on that criteria U2 blows them both out of the water. Listen to any U2 show and listen to the references bono makes to the town. Be it working a reference to coming into town via the fort pitt tunnel in Pittsburgh into a song, name dropping thomas jefferson in Charlottesville, or telling a story about playing a video game in a club called stage one in buffalo the day Lennon was shot on the 25th anniversary of it during a show in Buffalo. It's a nice touch and certainly appreciated but really, with google, these guys can research themselves and whatever city they're in in about 5 minutes before hitting the stage.

I agree...DMB's music is built much more to translate live...hard rock is tough to reproduce live, and is more built for the studio. That said, Pearl Jam does a great job at doing it. I like DMB's music more, but for sheer entertainment value, my money goes to PJ at the live show.

I'll have to disagree. I have been a fan of both bands since 2000 or so and have seen 28 DMB shows and 6 PJ shows. DMB just sounds sooooo much better to me.

No I agree with you...what I'm saying is, the overall show for PJ is better...I think DMB sounds better too, but the other factors that go into a show, well PJ just wins out IMO. I figured I'd be in the minority, but hey, if not anything else, hopefully some of you will check out PJ live to see how much fun it is.

They just play music. Eddie interacted with the crowd tonight but he had the perfect setup too. If the Phillies were losing to the Yanks then his whole crowd interaction angle would have went down the tubes. Do you think that lady would have came out with the score on a poster board if they were losing? I'm fine with Dave just saying a few words between songs and getting back to playing. Concerts are about the music.

Re: Pearl Jam live blows live DMB away

I've seen Pearl Jam several times, and while they're a band I will always try and catch when given the opportunity, I don't think their show holds a candle to DMB's overall. They're a great live band, but I just think DMB is better (and I actually think Phish is better live than both of them, but that's a whole different story).

I'll be going to the show Friday in Philly and I can't wait, but I sold my ticket for tonight because I didn't want to miss game one of the World Series. I don't know that I'd do the same with a DMB or Phish ticket.

Yeah if the Phills weren't winning then they would've had a tough time getting the crowd as amped up as they were. But if you say concerts are about the music, PJ played WAY more music than DMB does. Sure the songs are shorter, but they play for a longer time, pull out rare gems regularly and jam out the occassional tune.

But their songs are shorter and they don't sound as good. Both bands play for around 2.5 hours. So why does playing more songs matter?

I've seen a good amount of concerts that are better than some DMB shows Ive seen. Don't remember posting it on a DMB fan site though, let alone the part of the site dedicated to DMB.
