Ants Marching (DropD)

I don't know much about the different guitars Dave uses, but from what I've seen, he uses "DropD" in the 'fullers' songs, (Don't Drink The Water, Bartender, etc)

According to this setlist, he played DropD on Ants Marching on the cruise last week, after it segued from Everyday. Is this true?

Re: Ants Marching (DropD)

I think I saw a setlist like this awhile back and I'm pretty sure it's referring to Tim

Re: Ants Marching (DropD)

tim does this with several songs...stone comes to mind as well...when my friend and i play d&t style its good to use drop d for the background stuff b/c of how full you can make it sound, a little more diverse as well

Yeah, Tim..

Everyday isn't drop D, so he'd have to seque from that to Ants and change guitars..

Re: Ants Marching (DropD)

actually, Tim's setlists usually have more annotations, such this one:

http://dmbalmanac.com/setscans/453056574.jpg

because he uses the Flying V, and others on different songs.

i think the cruise one is actually Dave's.

how does tim use the v and the drop d on DDTW? 8 minutes seems too short for a DDTW with an intro, in which case he could use one for the intro, then switch out... but anyone know?

and zach enjoy richard thompson! it'll be a great show! i saw him a few years ago. he broke a string and finished the song, then fixed it, and broke another string, and still sounded fucking ace.

its actually the flying V tuned to drop d. you can tune any guitar to drop d. the drop d just annotates the tuning, and the V says which guitar.

and thanks, richard thompson is definitely awesome live! seen him a few times. always brings on a great show. all three shows are all request shows, so he draws songs from a bucket that the audience members all put in. brings out some crazy shit sometimes!

ahh i see
But for Dave, doesn't he use a different guitar, pre-tuned to drop d? Maybe that's what I'm thinking...

Ha that should be crazy. I wish DMB would do something like that.

well with dave he doesnt use different guitars for the same tuning. he has a drop d guitar, a standard tuned guitar, a raised b guitar, a resonator, a baritone, a standard electric, the tiny guitar, and i THINK thats it (as far as full band shows go).

tim on the other hand uses different guitars but for the same tunings sometimes.

thats why im pretty sure this is dave's setlist, because tim's always specifies the guitar and not just the tuning.

if DMB did it theyd get all sorts of crazy shit! and they wouldnt remember how to play any of it

eh i give up! i tried to guess the song based on what guitar dave picked up this summer, but the only ones i can recognize and remember what's played on are the gryphon (which i didn't see ), the 12 string, and the baritone (which i didn't see )

Sure DMB hasn't been around as long as Thompson, but they have a pretty deep catalog, and it'd just be so fun to see them play 20 different songs every night.

This is definitely Tim's setlist. He uses Drop D tuning on Ants, whereas Dave uses standard tuning.

Re: Ants Marching (DropD)

it is Tim's setlist because a lot of the ones that say Drop D next to Ants Marching also say 'V' next to certain songs. this refers to the flying v tim plays on some songs, and i know for a fact that Dave doesn't play the flying v's.
