To Those Who Hate Butch Taylor

Go back and listen to the first four minutes of Seek Up from Live Trax 1.

I don't EVER want Tim to stop touring with DMB, but I'd love it if Butch came back and played..Dave, Carter, Boyd, Stefan, Tim, Jeff, Rashawn, Butch. It would be perfect. Well...switch Jeff with Roi and then it would be perfect

Respect. His Jimi Thing solo from Fenway is another one to listen to and go "Damn, the guy can play."

Butch was a huge, 7-year-long mistake. sure, he had his moments of brilliance but so would every single other musician if they played with a band for 7 years. i don't miss him one bit and am really happy with the current lineup.

Does anyone else think Butch looks kinda like Matt Lepay, the voice of the UW Badgers? http://www.thedailypage.com/media/20...kLepayMatt.jpg

I second this. Take off Rashawn (sorry, I know he's been good for the band since Roi passed, but I really dislike the trumpet in this band) and bring back Butch if you so desire. I'd prefer if both were absent tho.

Exactly.

Butch being gone is for the better, and it looks like it'll stay that way.

Yeah, and then listen to the last 8 minutes where Butch bores us to death with his elevator music.

well put

even a lot of his work on two step was good, but when some songs, namely bartender and seek up, are needlessly extended 5-6 minutes. it was boring, no matter how good he was playing. otherwise, i liked how his fills fit with the DMB sound.

agreed.. but Tim is too involved sometimes also, not to mention, too loud and kills some songs. Tim was better in the early days, he can do too much, which is what Butch did.

Re: To Those Who Hate Butch Taylor

Butch is an absolutely incredible piano player. I could argue that he was the most talented member in the band. That being said, he did no fit well with DMB. It's why he gets a horrible rep. He drew out songs in places that they shouldn't have been drawn out, he used his organ WAYYY too much, along with a bunch of other things.

He did shine on a few songs though. I love his work on Rapunzel, Warehouse, and a few others songs.

The bottom line is that Butch is an incredible musician, but he just did NOT fit with DMB.

This band should be able to find someone who is easily better than Butch. Which is exactly what this band should do if they want to hire another keyboardist.

I would tea tag Butch, if I had the chance. Then, tell I'd tell him to shave his 70s pornstar-esque mustache, and play a real instrument (keyboard/organ/effects makers are not real instruments). Piano, yes. Keyboards with annoying effects, no.

tim's "too much" entails him being too loud on some songs, but at least his too loud-ness doesn't drag songs out for 7 extra minutes.

the word "energy" is thrown out a lot around here in jest, but the energy at a DMB show with tim is about 10000x higher then it was with butch.

too loud, in my opinion, is better then boring

Re: To Those Who Hate Butch Taylor

I enjoyed/tolerated Butch on a small handful of songs. But he also ruined some songs that should not be ruined. Overall, I'm probably real close to the middle of the pack in terms of liking/hating Butch, leaning a little more towards the dislike. Put it this way, I'm happy with the lineup they put on stage in 08 and 09 and will continue to put out there until they hang it up.

I cannot knock the guys talent but he doesn't fit in with DMB as well as Tim. I would much hear an amazing electric guitar solo than Butch on the piano.

Ya except I dig Ants with Timmy. Some of my favorite versions of Ants were from this tour.
Basically, Grey Street was effectively ruined when the extra verse was omitted. I dont really care what personel is on this song nowadays, it just doesnt do it for me. Pre 2002 Grey Street is a no doubt top 10 DMB song IMO. Now I think its pretty average.

Butch is an incredible musician. That said he didn't fit DMB well at all. The only song he improved was warehouse. His fills weren't bad either but I prefer Tim's fills over Butch. Also I prefer my Two Step with an awesome Tim solo and Carter going insane over an 8 minute Butch solo.

When Tim plays with distortion set to 92992, is that not an annoying effect?

Re: To Those Who Hate Butch Taylor

I liked the piano section with DMB I actually think it would be awesome now that they have Tim also because I think that was also a sound that was missing. I wish Tim would do more solos and rip it up more. And I do agree about his volume he was turned up too loud at some shows and maybe that turned some people off of him. Back to Butch like I said I like the piano section I really do think it fits but I agree with a lot of people I don't like how sometimes it was just too much in some songs. The solos were to the t at every show and never changed which bugged me way before I visited a message board. I remember when two step and liog to name a few would come on and i'd be like damnit this is going to take up 20 mins and i'd rather hear something else in this slot or at least a new arrangement/jam.
