Bands That Do and Bands That dont . . .

As far as mixing up a setlist live ... what bands do it and what bands simply dont do it?

I know the eagles off the top of my head will stick to the same setlist throughout a tour... and have pretty much been playing the same set since there new album was released...

heres and example of michael jackson... his setlist from 9.27.1987

Disc 1
1 Wanna Be Startin Somethin
2 Human Nature
3 Heartbreak Hotel
4 Medley Jackson 5
5 She's Out Of My Life
6 Things I Do For You
7 Off The Wall
8 Rock With You

Disc 2
1 Lovely One
2 Working Day And Night
3 Beat It
4 Billie Jean
5 Shake Your Body > Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough tease > Shake Your Body
6 Thriller
7 I Just Can't Stop Loving You
8 Bad

^ Great encore (6,7,8)

and we should all be happy. We know dmb is creative, theyll mix up the sets very soon...

Most bands stick to almost the same setlist throughout a tour.

Just go on www.thetradersden.org and look at setlists. So many bands use the exact same setlist from night to night. I don't have time to go check right now. These same bands that play the same show from night to night also have the exact same light show and explosions and all that other bs at the exact same point. I would think more bands than not, play almost the exact same set from night to night.

I would say that more bands to stick the same setlist. People who are familiar with the jam band scene will feel that more bands mix it up, but it's really not the standard.

Re: Bands That Do and Bands That dont . . .

coldplay sticks to the same setlist all tour, i know that for sure.

MJ had one setlist for a tour but that makes sense because he & his crew put SO MUCH work and detail into every song and he even has different outfits for different parts of the show to go with the lighting that there would be no way for him to mix it up because when he rehearses, he rehearses a full-on show not just individual songs like DMB.

wow, people desperately want DMB to be a jam band, huh? the thing about DMB is that they're a happy medium between mainstream pop and jam bands. they don't play the same exact set every night but they also don't play different songs every night. they mix it up with a couple repeats thrown in there. it's a happy medium, that's why they attract so many people. stop wanting DMB to be something they're not.

Re: Bands That Do and Bands That dont . . .

neil young isn't a jam band, and typically he mixes up his shows based on the tour.

i've seen him twice in the last three years.

NEIL YOUNG
2008-12-07, Palace Of Auburn Hills, Auburn Hills, Michigan, USA

Love And Only Love / Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black) / Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere / Powderfinger / Spirit Road / Cortez The Killer / Cinnamon Girl / Oh, Lonesome Me / Mother Earth / Light A Candle / The Needle And The Damage Done / Unknown Legend / Heart Of Gold / Old Man / Get Back To The Country / Just Singing A Song / Sea Change / Fuel Line / When Worlds Collide / Cowgirl In The Sand / Rockin' In The Free World // A Day In The Life

NEIL YOUNG
2007-11-13, Chicago Theater, Chicago, Illinois, USA

From Hank To Hendrix / Ambulance Blues / Sad Movies / A Man Needs A Maid / No One Seems To Know / Harvest / Journey Through The Past / Mellow My Mind / Love Art Blues / Love Is A Rose / Cowgirl In The Sand / Heart Of Gold // The Loner / Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere / Dirty Old Man / Spirit Road / Bad Fog Of Loneliness / Winterlong / Oh, Lonesome Me / The Believer / No Hidden Path // Cinnamon Girl / Tonight's The Night / The Sultan

So the first show was 21 songs, the second show was 24 songs, and only 6 songs repeated.

if DMB wants to play the same songs night in and night out, that's fine, but at least a pick a new batch of songs to play every year, instead of just like 2 or 3 which they tend to do

I don't think song selections should discern from jamband to non-jamband. I love my DMB, my point is they have a song catalog that should take them down lesser traveled roads. Album year or not. Just because you are not a jamband does not mean songs shouldn't vary from night to night. I don't want DMB to become a U2 or Stones or Bruce, where they rely on an entirley new crowd to be at different shows night after night where they can get away with playing the same, with minor variations, night after night. DMB is a touring band, and with that comes fans that stay on tour for 5-10 shows at a time, much like Phish and other more traditional jambands. Point, if I haven't already made it, is that they have a song catalog that offers much more varied setlists than they put out. And very loyal fans who would recognize the more obscure songs. So why not?

Re: Bands That Do and Bands That dont . . .

the thing is, though, i don't think the loyal fans are a big percentage of the crowd. most of the people are just there to get fucked up. in chula vista, which i heard was supposed to be a "loyal" crowd, people were only paying attention during satellite, ymdt, and crash. the rest of the time they were in and out of the aisles, buying more booze, talking loudly, getting in trouble by ushers, and missing the whole show

there's a certain energy at certain shows that dave definitely feels. if he feels that the majority of people there are super loyal, hell yeah, he'll play awesome songs. but if that feel just isn't there, he's gonna do the same shit over and over because he knows that's what most people like.

I completey agree with you. But that makes me incredibly upset as a lover of this band. I have witnessed, first hand, the type of crowd that you are describing. And as much as I'd like to say that's not how the scene really is, I'm growing more and more convinced that it just is. But then the question I'm begged to ask is why? From my first show in summer of '96 until the early 2000's, DMB would draw fans that you would be almost guaranteed to see at a Phish show. Now, we are, and our beloved band, is pigeon-holed by said phans as obnoxious, preppy, rich, snobbish, frat boy wiggers hahaha. These "types" are found at nearly every show I've been to in the past 6 years. Was it simply the mainstream exposure that attracted such an audience, or is it simply an easy escape for those who don't love the music to indulge in the partying that comes with the concert scene. I still hang on though.

Re: Bands That Do and Bands That dont . . .

what i think happens is that one person who loves the music brings his/her entire group of friends because of the party atmosphere. they don't love the music but their friend does so they do it for them and they just go to party. it's an interesting atmosphere but if you have good seats, you can just ignore everyone in the venue and have bonding time with the band that's what keeps me going to shows

i'm interested what the vegas crowd is gonna be like next month. the only other time i saw dave and tim was a benefit concert for the dalai lama and it was promoting compassion. during the lama's speech, someone yelled out "fuck compassion we want dave!" way to keep it classy DMB fans....

That is a 3 night stand my friends. Much like Phish...all the favs, a couple rarities...a rocking weekend. No Danny Barnes coming out for his 3 songs every night *cough cough*gorge* But still, DMB isn't a jam band and simply are not in the same musical arena as these bands. Their music is too tight and too confined to open it up like that. Look at all those seques...that was my 5th moe.down too. What a weekend.

The Vegas crowd should be pretty classy. There are a ton of diehard/WH fans going, and for the most part they should know how to conduct themselves.

we can only hope whatever the crowd's like, they will not keep me from enjoying the experience i just really hope people shut the fuck up and don't do what they do at full-band shows when Dave plays a quiet song.

Re: Bands That Do and Bands That dont . . .

Some bands do, some bands don't. Bands like Radiohead have pretty much no improv, yet they mix up their sets pretty well. The Mars Volta generally has quite a bit of improv (though not on this tour, argh) but plays the same set every night. So there's not always a clear dividing line of bands that jam and bands that don't. Though most huge arena acts probably keep it pretty standard, I think the norm among more 'regular' bands is to be in DMB's vain... not neccessarily following the same set every night, but not necessarily trying to keep things varied on purpose like Panic or Phish.

Re: Bands That Do and Bands That dont . . .

A majority of bands keep the same basic setlist every single show. Of the bands I've seen, only a couple change it up every night

Same Set List (w/ maybe 1-3 variations)
Foo Fighters
Flaming Lips
Coldplay
The Killers
Kings of Leon
Jack Johnson
U2
The Rolling Stones

Different Sets
Dave Matthews Band
Phish
Pearl Jam
Matt Nathanson
Dashboard Confessional

John Mayer is kind of different, he'll play almost the exact same set 3 nights in a row and then a completely unpredictable show.

As much as we bitch and moan about Dave not playing rare tunes, we should be thankful we can't guess each setlist with 90% accuracy.

Re: Bands That Do and Bands That dont . . .

Well we all know DMB does not compare to Phish/ Pearl Jam in terms of set variation, but I think DMB does well enough in terms of mixing things up. I just took a look through the almanac looking at 2/3 night stand set variations. I think most of these are right, it was just off a quick glance..

WPB 08- no repeats
SPAC 08- 2 repeats
Alpine 08- 1 repeat (2 with ATSB)
Gorge 08- 3 repeats in all three nights (4 with ATSB)
Berkeley 08- 1 repeat in 3 nights (3 with ATSB)
Alpine 09- 3 repeats
DC 09- 4 repeats
Vegas 09- 3 repeats

Obviously 09 had more repeats because of it being an album tour and what not, but just looking through the band has been pretty good on not repeating too many songs on multi night stands. The problem with set variation is more with regular 1 night stops. Hopefully next year has more variation like 08 or early 06.

Good call, I think people are overreacting a bit and forgetting we were on an album tour. Rarely (if ever) did you see a non-BW song get repeated this year in a 2 night stand.

Re: Bands That Do and Bands That dont . . .

I think it was in the Road to Big Whiskey with clips from awhile ago Dave said they're a pop band that wants to make music accesible to everyone and there's a little something for everyone. I may be wrong on where I saw this and this is obviously not a direct quote but he said something along those lines. Given that, I'm not really surprised about the crowd because there really is a little (some a lot) bit of everyone in attendance.

I know Bob Seger only changes a couple songs from night to night. (When he actually tours, which is about as often as DMB plays Spotlight).

I remember Incubus playing the night before DMB at Spac in 2007 and when I looked at the setlist afterwards every song from every night was exactly the same.

Re: Bands That Do and Bands That dont . . .

My best example of DMB mixing it up would be the Gorge 2006 run. In all, they played 54 tunes I believe and 51 of them were diffrent. Only played 3 repeats the whole weekend. If this isn't mixing it up, I don't know what is. Please keep in mind that the most recent tour was done to support an album so they obviously were not able to mix it up as much. I really feel like the band does go the extra mile to mix it up, at least more than 90% of other bands. Here are the set lists from the 2006 Gorge run. 3 repeats the whole weekend.

Re: Bands That Do and Bands That dont . . .

Ive seen lots of bands that dont change their set lists for whole tours or more, including: Tool, Fleetwood mac, Genesis, the police, styx, and Aperfect circle just to name a few
