Musicians defiantly respect DMB more than just normal fans, Agree?

I have been playing guitar since grade four and I can personally say that hearing Dave play Warehouse for the first time just made me respect him forever. I think musicians can also respect DMB post 2000 era more than everyone else bitching about it because we realize their stuff is still really complex and unique. What about you guys? Drummers, guitar players, sax, etc, do you guy's have a more inner respect?

Musicians understand the complexities of the music better. I still think the average person at a show will recognize someone like Carter or Tim have a shitload of talent.

Probably 50% of my obsession comes from singing and playing all the songs on guitar. I basically learned guitar by playing DMB songs

I'll play about 20 songs for someone and each time they will be like "Who plays that" and i'll be like for the 20th time Dave Matthews Band, figure it out already

i got a friend who is a quality guitar player. The only DMB song he knows is WAYG because he says, "Dave is a fucking crazy man on guitar."
He may not have the best voice, but shit, Dave can play some strings.

I've noticed most band geeks and musicians really like DMB.

I'm pretty proficient on trumpet, piano, guitar, and the voice (IMHO), I'm even working on my music degree, and I don't think I respect post 2000 DMB more than any non-musician. Everyday still has some bad songs and is overproduced, Busted Stuff is pretty good but lacking the magic, Stand Up is still an abomination, and Big Whiskey is pretty good, great is some parts, and mehhh in others.

i don't play an instrument, but like i have basic knowledge of music and theory and used to play the piano and violin (but i'm by no means close to proficient), and i appreciate their music. It's obviously genre-defying and much more complex than most popular music.

Whenever I tell musicians I'm a hardcore DMB fan, they usually say: "Yeah the guys in that band are extremely talented. I'm just not into that stuff though, don't get me wrong." I think musicians know they're very good.

I don't know if I'd call it more respect. I'm pretty sure I understand the music and what makes it sound the way it does better than a casual listener. But music is an art form. You don't need to physically understand how much control it takes a sax player to play 2 horns at the same time to decide if you like the way it sounds. I definitely respect the musicality that goes into the various sax lines and violin parts... as well as the riffs Dave plays and the grooves Carter comes up with. I suppose in a manner of speaking, I respect Coffin's playing more than some because I understand what's going on there.

Re: Musicians defiantly respect DMB more than just normal fans, Agree?

Definitely agree. Fonz was the reason I began playing bass and is still the reason I play bass. Biggest musical influence in my ever-growing book of influences.

You can listen to other bands and go, "well at least the song's catchy" even though you know you could learn how to play every line from every instrument in under an hour. But with DMB, I love the feeling of being floored by the musicality of (almost) every song. It's nice to still have something in the world that I can be in awe of, and I'm glad DMB is there to do it for me.

People tell me i am just going through a faze with this band. There is just simply no way, each one of them just blows my mind all the time. I tell average people that freak out to carter that they are freaking out because he is so damn entertaining, im freaking out because i realize the unbelievable things he does.

Being knowledgeable in a field of art certainly makes it better to you. Which is why smarter people/musicians usually like more complex music. They can actually aurally comprehend what is going on. It's one of the levels of understanding art.

This is why you don't see dumb ass teenagers at performances of Stravinsky.

Exactly! There's no denying their talent if you know your shit, but it all comes down to personal taste.

I'm a bit of a music nerd (even though I'm not particularly good at guitar), and a big DMB fan. I think Busted Stuff has some amazing things showing. Drumming (he can make a 4/4 sound so complicated ) and violin on Grey Street are just awesome (screw people who say Boyd has no talent ), and first time I saw Dave play "The Stone" on Charlie Rose is when I came to revere him as a guitarist (other good examples are STJL and FTT on the Benaroya Hall show).

In general, if I want to showcase the band's talent to someone who is going to understand it, I play the Busted Stuff version of Grey Street. Everyone is just at their absolute peak here, and the lyrics are also great, as opposed to those awkward moments on the LWS version (To grey... on grey street and echoed "she said I pray"). Dave's vocals are also tons better on the BS version.

Edit: How could I forget YNK, if you wanna brag about how awesome Carter is, play Grey Street, YNK, Rapunzel or Two Step

Defiantly: characterized by defiance; boldly resistant or challenging: a defiant attitude.

Definitely: 1. in a definite manner; unambiguously. 2. unequivocally; positively.

You could rename this thread to "We can play an instrument so, we are better fans of DMB" shut the fuck up. i am a musician so respect the band more, i'm in the warehouse i am a bigger fan, i have 10000 posts on antsmarching i am the biggest fan. the people commenting in this thread about their superior DMB respect are exactly why people think the DMB fanbase are a bunch of douchebags, you like a band, this does not make you special.

I'm guessing you don't play an instrument...

And your postcount is way too low. You're lucky I even respond to your post.

Zing

And dudley, the thread was just talking about how some people may respect the band more based on DMB's musical talent as opposed their own personal appreciation of the band. Nothing wrong with either of them, and besides, I think the kind of fans that vote Tim Reynolds a better guitarist than John Mayer are no better than music snobs that talk down to people for not knowing the time signature of some song.

I suppose, but interestingly they aren't super-respected by the other musical giants in the industry.

To play a live show in a band you need an ear for music; to understand the complexities of the parts that comprise the whole. As such a true gigging musician will respect DMB for there hard work attitude, complexity of the music, and the most amazing drummer that we currently share the world with. I am a bass player, and as such I tend to listen to other bands for bass inspiration, but when it comes to overall musical composition DMB is the shit.

carter's drumming is sick...that extended 4 stroke roll, or w/e u wanna call it, on crush and two step is nuts...i've been a drummer for about 11 years and some of the stuff he pulls off is nuts...i definitiely think musicians have a greater appreciation for some of the stuff dmb plays
