Favorite Jack Ryan (Tom Clancy) Film

Flipping thru the channels here on a Sunday afternoon I come across The Hunt For Red October and reminded how much I love this movie. I'd guess this title will probably run away with the poll, but what the hell.

In doing the little bit of research for this thread, I was surprised to see there's only been 4 Jack Ryan films, I would've guessed there was at least one more Harrison Ford one.

I would expect Sum Of All Fears will show up last in this, but I don't think it's a bad film at all, just that the others are that good. However if you haven't heard, Paramount is looking at rebooting the series yet again (Affleck's turn didn't last long) setting it sometime in the very near future (book not yet decided) and so far the new Capt Kirk, Chris Pine is being looked at for taking over the Ryan character.

Re: Favorite Jack Ryan (Tom Clancy) Film

I forgot to mention... maybe Jake with how obviously well read he is would have some info on this. Of course at the very start of Red October it's mentioned that the events of the film are based on real life, though the American government denies anything like it ever happened.

How close to reality was this situation?

Re: Favorite Jack Ryan (Tom Clancy) Film

This is going to be laughable. The Hunt for Red October is going to win this in a landslide.

Hunt For Red October was a better book, but I liked Patriot Games better as a film.

I really need to watch Hunt for Red October again before I can vote in this poll, but I remember really enjoying Patriot Games. Red October has the best story though.

You said you understood love at 15, now you're saying this.

Are you serious on both counts, or you just in a really sarcastic mood?

Yeah, that book was amazing. The 'trilogy' with Debt of Honor and Bear and Dragon were just killer. Honestly though, Clancy is a great writer but he can get bogged down in details and technology that can make me lose focus. Some of the incessant pages about the monkeys and virus in EO I just skimmed.

Loved the scene at the end of EO where Clark and Ding and using the designator on Daryei's (sp's) house while Ryan is on TV as the place goes up. Also loved the Russian WW2 sniper in Bear plus the end scene on the cruiser where Ryan rides out the threat on the Gettysburg was great.

Not sure any of them could be a movie though, too many subplots. Mini series maybe. I thought Clear and Present Danger was better than Patriot games, HFRO, and SOAF but it did not translate to the screen that well.

I blasted through Bear over my vacation in a few days, engrossing.

In non Ryan works, the book I have red the most ever, is Red Storm Rising. Absolutely amazing.

Re: Favorite Jack Ryan (Tom Clancy) Film

Anyone who is a Clancy fan would probably enjoy a writer named Patrick Robinson. He has some killer Naval stuff and his lead character in most of the books is every bit as entertaining as Jack Ryan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Robinson_(author)

Hunt, definitely. However, Harrison Ford is the best Jack Ryan.

Did Clancy retire? I hope not...but he hasn't put anything out since 03, so maybe he did. That sucks.

His non-fiction stuff is very informative as well. Not a quick novel like read at all though. More like a tomes on tactics - great if you're interested.

This would be my answer, if the two film names were switched in the sentence. Patriot Games was much better as a book, and oddly enough, I was just thinking today how it's a shame I only have Red October in VHS.
