Are The Eagles Lame?

Seriously, I've grown up on the Eagles, and I've always thought they were in the elite of classic rock artists. I don't think I'm dillusional in thinking this--I do get picked on in my circle of friends for liking them, and I'm told that the Eagles are "lame" and shouldn't be in any discussion of great rock bands from the past. Where do people fall on this?

Another question I have, and this can be as related or unrelated to the first question as you want it to be: Is Hotel California one of the greatest rock songs ever? Not necessarily your favorite or what you feel is best, but if you were to create a list of the most well known, legendary, MONSTER classic rock songs... How far down the list do you go? I always felt this song was on the same level as songs like Bohemian Rhapsody, Free Bird, and Stairway to Heaven, in the sense that they are just monster songs in the history of rock... Wanted to see what others felt about this.

20 songs that are, to different degrees, significant classic rock songs. I don't know if any other band exists that can claim that. I'm not saying the Eagles are better than bands like Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, or Skynyrd... But None of those bands can claim 20 hit songs.

Hotel California has, in my experience, been the most commonly heard song on the radio over the course of my lifetime. Even people I've come across who dislike the Eagles tend to be fine with this song... I'm pretty sure it's well liked universally, and thus played a lot. The country infusion into it makes it a hit song for classic rock fans and country fans alike. It's at the top of lists for requests for every classic rock radio station from Maine to Hawaii, and has been for the last 30 years. Although not everyone can sing the lyrics, there are more people that know this song than know 99.99999 percent of all other songs in existance.
