do you tip? In my world, if i have terrible service, i tip very, very little, but i have never left without tipping at all.

I tip regardless. The level of service dictates how high or low the tip may be.

If it's a buffet, I don't tip. Otherwise, I tip. I usually tip 20 percent for good service. If the person's having a bad night because they're being overwhelmed and so service isn't that great, I'll still tip 20. But if it's clearly bad service, I tip 10 percent. I've never not tipped otherwise. I guess I've never had that bad service to not give a tip.

I have been in the F&B Biz for a while. You should always tip. Take your issue up with a manager or someone that can fix the situation. Most servers only make $2-$4 an hour. Not tipping is just shitty. If your service sucked pay your 15% and talk to someone or just don't go back.

No one is bitching about making $4 an hour. You show your gratitude for the service rendered. Usually if you question whether to tip or not you will most likely be seeking management. Why would you not? I believe that if someone sucked at their job, I would tell em so they could fix it.

That article is about not paying a MANDATORY gratuity that was added to their check. They had 6 people. Grat is automatically added and it's NOT optional in those cases. It's part of the price. It is a requirement.

You can complain to a manager and ask them to remove the grat, but you can't just not pay it.

That's what I was thinking too.

And I'll always leave a tip, but it absolutely depends on how good the service is, but as long as you're polite and my food isn't spit in I really don't ask for too much more than that.

Yeah, but does manditory grat have an actual law backing it up as being theft or is it one of those things society assumes you have to do? That is an honest question because in the linked article the theft charge against these people said it wouldn't hold up in court

If service is absolutes unacceptable, I don't tip... for example, I've been at a place that isn't busy at all, but service is still slow and when the waitress does come around, she isn't personable or friendly... and when we're wondering where our server is for whatever reason we look around and see her just hanging out behind the counter texting or something... then I don't tip. but if it's just bad service but it appears the server is trying to some extent, i'll just dock the tip.

To add one more thing, this is totally an immature high school thing to do and I'd never, ever do it again, but once at Denny with a couple of friends, the waitress didn't write any of our orders down, got only one right and forgot one of them entirely. We gave her a "tip" instead of a tip: "Next time, write it down!"

not tipping is pretty shitty, regardless of service. there are a lot more people that the tip goes to than that server. so yeah, he/she may suck, but the food runner, bartender, and busboy probably didn't. if you don't tip don't go out to eat, stay home and cook your own food, clean your own dishes, and serve yourself.

after all the tipouts and taxes (if its a credit card) a waiter/waitress only gets a fraction of the tip you actually leave.

buffets and none-standard stuff is another story, but a normal waiter/waitress setting, if you don't tip at all thats pretty beat.

mostly all the places i go to, i have friends there. i always try to tip them well because i always get great service. if i only get a beer thats 4 bucks, ill tip 5 or sometimes more.

Eating out is a privilege, not a requirement, too. So by that alone, I tip, unless service is just that bad. Like I said, I've never had that experience.

So then explain why I should feel guilty if I don't pay them 15%? If someone made my experience more enjoyable as a result of their service, I have zero problems tipping 20% and always a minimum of 15% if the service was friendly and as expected. However, if the service made my experience less enjoyable, I'll still tip, but it will be more like 10% max.

I don't feel guilty about how I tip, but people act like we should feel sorry for people who work in the service industry and that we owe them a tip no matter what. If that's not how they like to be paid, then they shouldn't work in that industry.

Yea. It's part of the price. Not paying it is the same as if your steak cost $19 but you only felt is was worth $10 so that's what you paid.

You can contest it with the manager, same with the steak but until he adjusts the price of your bill, you owe that amount.
