DMB Giving The Fans Songs

do you think dave/dmb literally thinks that they are "giving" a particular crowd a song when they bust out a song that ants like that is rare-ish? is that how they view it? i dont think they view it like this at all, but people always think "they are saving ________ for this city/crowd". it is true that some of the bigger venues get more interesting songs, but do you think that the band thinks that they are "giving" everybody the song? i think they like most of their songs and just play what they feel like playing that night. tho some IEMs disagree with that

Re: DMB Giving The Fans Songs

DMB (or more specifically, Dave since he chooses the setlists) certainly does not save "special" songs for "special venues..." although I do think he chooses setlists more carefully when the concert is being recorded for possible Live Trax/DVD release.

It could be argued that the band is on fire more often than not when they're in a venue that they're known to love though (Red Rocks, Gorge, SPAC, Alpine, etc.)

Re: DMB Giving The Fans Songs

I feel like they do that with venues like SPAC, Alpine, Red Rocks, or the Gorge. It's probably because they know those shows are FILLED with hardcore fans; which is probably why people who go to certain venues such as the ones I name above defend the shit out of it. But sometimes I feel like it's a spur of the moment thing. There's a soundboard of 12.4.00 floating around (it might be an IEM actually ) but anyways, you can hear Dave being like "Let's just bust this shit out, just me and you Carter", and they play Halloween. The Allstate arena is nothing special. Also DMB brought back #34 at the most random venue ever: Mansfield. Even though that's my home venue, I still find that a little strange. I think it really depends. If you go to a "staple" DMB venue, I'd expect to hear more rare songs, but I'd call you somewhat lucky if you got anything good elsewhere for the most part. But that DOES NOT mean they play bad shows at other venues. Hell even random shows from this year, like WPB N2 proved they didn't need to be at SPAC or Alpine to have one of their arguably best shows of the year.

So to answer your question: it depends.

you are incorrect unfortunately. see alpine the last four years. last stop, dreaming tree, spoon, ynk. spac too always sees some greats brought back for the first time on a tour, other venues dont

Okay, and this is why you are incorrect. I got Spoon in '08, but got Cornbread, Smooth Rider, and Bayou in '09. See how that works?

Re: DMB Giving The Fans Songs

The band knows that hardcore fans go to SPAC, Alpine and The Gorge every year so they give those fans some of the more rare songs, but there are also probably times at an random venue when they just feel like playing some thing that isn't usually played.

Re: DMB Giving The Fans Songs

i'm not sure we will ever really know.....so the speculation is always going to be there. my guess is that they pick songs to play based on what they feel like playing each night. i don't think it's venue specific, BOWA got played at random venues, DC got Say Goodbye and the debut of Shotgun....i just think it's more random than some people would suggest.

Re: DMB Giving The Fans Songs

The only reason I feel like the band plays to the crowd is because of my experience with Riverbend in 08'. I feel you could honestly tell that the band was suprised at the reaction they were getting out of the fans, it's not something they were used to from riverbend. Before many of the rare/unexpected songs were played there was a lot of discussion going on between the band memebers... more than the occasional "that shit was crazy". They also came back in 09' excited to be there... they had a good time and you could tell they were enjoying themselves. I don't feel like they save certain songs for a certain venue but I do feel like they will throw in "better" songs for stronger crowds.

Re: DMB Giving The Fans Songs

I think Dave is more careful when selecting the setlist for bigger venues as opposed to when they're at a normal summer tour stop. It could also be they get pumped playing in front of a bigger crowd (Alpine, SPAC, Gorge) and want to bust out anything and everything.

Re: DMB Giving The Fans Songs

If you read Hammer of the Gods (the story of Led Zeppelin) they talk about how the band used the smaller venues as almost like a practice, and they really looked forward to the bigger venues. At the big venues they pulled out all the stops. So i think DMB goes to places like Alpine, SPAC, the Gorge and "pulls out all the stops".

nice reasoning skills

the fact is, the band... and a lot of other bands as well, bust certain songs just for certain venues. or they wait to bust to out certain songs until they get to that venue. even look at SPAC this year with just a song like shake me like a monkey. to tell me that the band helf off as long as they did and then OPENED with it is pure coincidence is asinine. they knew that we wanted SMLAM bad.

Re: DMB Giving The Fans Songs

i've wondered this too, i live in raleigh and i've been to alltell/time warner pavilion since 03. in 04 we got the latest tour debut of 41 for a summer, in 05 got one of three typical situations, in 06 got the only DIDO out that summer, in 07 got the first of four for YNK and the first of five partial typical situations...and first time bayou has opened haha woo, in 08 they played the the space between which was only played twice that summer and it had been a whiile for that one, and in 09 we got the first blue water partial

i know if you were to look at the past few years for other venues they might have similar stats of rare/random songs being busted out, but i love typical situation and you never know, and thought it was really cool that raleigh caught the space between since it was only place twice since 04, but there is nothing overly special about the amphitheater in raleigh to the band but we have still caught some cool songs, like why would they place drive in drive out only once, and at raleigh

this is a little rambling but i tried to tie in the op's topic

i don't necessarily agree 100% with this, but i don't disagree 100% either. The other fact to consider is that they do bust out special/rare songs at other venues besides the "big 3 or 4". I mean, I would consider Recently to be a rare-ish song the past couple years and it got played at Tinley Park of all places. So yeah, i do think they play rare songs at those bigger venues, but they are also played at other random places, which to me suggests that it isn't necessarily just about the venue in all cases....now, if they only played rare songs at just those bigger venues, then i would completely believe it to be venue specific.....i just think the band/dave before a show might think of a song they haven't played for a while and think it would be a good idea to play it that night...regardless of venue.

again, it's all speculation by us fans. of course we all want our home venues to be the place where DMB plays rare songs so that we can feel all warm and fuzzy inside, like the band picked those songs just for us....we really won't ever know for sure unless someone in or around the band has some insight into it and we hear about it.....so speculation is useless in my opinion.

Re: DMB Giving The Fans Songs

I feel like the band spread out the usual gorge greatness over the whole tour this year which was very nice. It was almost as if they did the opposite of the usual gorge = great everything else subpar, where this year the gorge seemed subpar compared to everywhere else. This is based solely on paper sets of course. It seems that the one night stands are the more "standard" . . . but for obvious reason though.

yes, but other venues get special tunes for the first time of the tour as well....this doesn't apply to just alpine, spac, and the gorge...

Re: DMB Giving The Fans Songs

i would say rare songs come out whenever they are on daves mind. Look at where blue water was played... no preference for venues, just a preference for a period within the tour.

As for halloweens or songs that are rare but have been played recently, thats more about night 2s. Camden has beautiful sets on night 2, regardless of alpine or spac. Same goes for a lot of night twos. Gorge or red rocks only gets hyped bc in addition to night 2, tehre are a lot of night 3s as well.

Other than that, its whats in daves head that makes or breaks a set
