Love of Dave's life?

I would like to first say that I'm sorry if this has been previously
discussed or is too personal of a topic for this forum. I just curious...
In the fuse documentary, when Dave is talking about writing crash
he mentions that is about the love of his life, his wife, I thought that all
of his "drama" if you will, with Grey was because she wouldn't marry him.
Given as btcs was the 3rd album i am confused to who he is referring to.

Re: Love of Dave's life?

Dave was probably just rambling...like that commencement speech he gave.

Made no sense.

Re: Love of Dave's life?

His current wife, Ashley, who he started dating in 1993. Before any of the major label albums came out, and definitely before Crash Into Me was written.

Re: Love of Dave's life?

he could have written the songs about an earlier time in his life.

Re: Love of Dave's life?

Halloween was writing shortly after julia broke up with him - it debuted on 10.31.1992. So, julia would have influenced only very early songs - lover lay down, ill back you up, halloween. Some say maybe grey street is about her, but there isnt much to back that up.

He met ashley that same night, from what I have read. They started dating a couple months later, in 1993. They dated for a long time on and off until they were married in 2001 (if my memory serves me). So most songs about love, like crush, are about ashley.

Re: Love of Dave's life?

Dave loved Julia, and Dave also loves Ashley. However, Julia didn't return his love, and Ashley did. From their relationship lasting so many years despite constant touring and DMB's rise to fame, I think there is no question that Ashley is the love of Dave's life.

About Crash Into Me, that doesn't seem to fit from what Dave has said about the song. Dave has said it's about a stalker type person, or a peeping tom. He could have been influenced by his passion for Ashley, but the subject doesn't seem to fit right.

So most songs about love, like crush, are about ashley.
Grey Street has been confirmed to be about the life of Anne Sexton, a poet.

Dave and Ashley were married in August 2000, during the summer tour break..

Dave has also stated that Crush is about Ashely.

Re: Love of Dave's life?

He also said that he always meant for the stalking thing to be taken as a joke and that the song was about how much he loved watching Ashley live her life. John Alagia also confirmed in Driven that Crash was written about Ashley and told the story of how crazy Dave would be waiting for her to return to Woodstock each weekend to visit him.

And Dave has never said that Grey Street is about Anne Sexton. An msnbc review of Busted Stuff had that in their review, but Dave has never said what Grey Street is about.

Don't forget, though, that the earlier versions of the lyrics (i.e., on Luther College) were a lot less "stalker-ish," for lack of a better word. Rather than sing "I watch you there through the window, yeah, I stare", on Luther College Dave sang "I watch you there, by the window...". The change of that one word transformed the whole meaning of the song, so, as originally written, it could have been about Ashley. However, the OP sort of takes Dave's quote in the Fuse doc out of context. What Dave actually says is "The majority of that song is inspired by the love of my life, which is, of course, my wife." To me, there's a big difference between being the inspiration for the song and being the subject of the song.

Re: Love of Dave's life?

Thanks so much! I guess I forgot that writing songs does not necessarily mean that they show up on an album in order. And the clarification on the early lyrics was great!

Well, just to say that the L@LC was after the album Crash was recorded, just it wasn't released yet. However, the earlier versions were less stalkerish, but L@LC isn't one of them.

those early versions of crash were pretty god damn. you're right about the lyrics. very different from the set lyrics, completely different theme. but those early versions were damn good.

Re: Love of Dave's life?

I know this may sound off topic, but I've been thinking about this for the past few years... and I have kinda thought that "Hello Again" was a song about Anne's killer... I could be dead wrong.. but if you think about it, it really makes a lot of sense to me. 10 yrs ago in 2004 was 1994 and if I'm not mistaken, that was the year Anne was murdered.

Anne killed herself, she wasn't murdered. Her daughter's middle name is gray (but spelled w/an "a") she also wrote a book called searching for mercy street.

This is completely wrong. She died at her husband's hands in a murder-suicide in late January 1994.

Just to make even more speculation, I have heard it's about the Green River Killer

Sorry but anyone who thinks it's a murder/suicide has got the wrong "Anne". The song isn't about Anne Matthews it's about Anne Sexton the poet.

-T

And Anne Sexton died in the 70's.

Re: Love of Dave's life?

It's been a while since we've talked about this tune so here's the lyrics lol.. let's discuss....

9/10/2005 alternate lyrics

[intro]
She was mine; my one and only
She was my one true love
She was my loving sister
She was mine and now, she's gone

said i've done my share of this
still hope the lord forgive me my sin
ten years ago down by the lake
i sunk my sweet love
her watery grave
I close my eyes and still see her face
i'd give my soul to take back that day

hello again
it's been too long
too long too long
hello again
You know you got what it is I want
Anyway I'm gonna take it from you
You know you got what it is I want
Anyway you know I'm gonna take it from

still i make my way there
over and over
I'm gonna see her face
blown away on that day
yes i am

I'm not worth the flesh on my bones
I am a waste of the air in my lungs
Run far from me
Go and be saved
The Devil, not God runs through my veins
