Don't forget, though, that the earlier versions of the lyrics (i.e., on Luther College) were a lot less "stalker-ish," for lack of a better word. Rather than sing "I watch you there through the window, yeah, I stare", on Luther College Dave sang "I watch you there,
by the window...". The change of that one word transformed the whole meaning of the song, so, as originally written, it could have been about Ashley. However, the OP sort of takes Dave's quote in the Fuse doc out of context. What Dave actually says is "The majority of that song is
inspired by the love of my life, which is, of course, my wife." To me, there's a big difference between being the inspiration for the song and being the subject of the song.
