Memorial Service song choice?

I never thought I would have to post something like this on Ants....but here it goes. One of my best friends went missing in Texas 2 1/2 years ago, and just recently they found his body. He is originally from Iowa for some of you in the Midwest who saw the story on the news.

Anyway, he was a big fan of DMB and now I'm drawing a blank and looking for advice for the memorial service his parents are planning. We are doing a powerpoint/slideshow of his life incorporated with music. During his hs/college/post college years we are trying to put a DMB song along with the pictures but I can't seem to find anything that fits. If anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated.

I can tell you to help narrow songs down, he didn't have a significant other so any heavy themed love songs are probably out. Also I ran Grace is Gone by his parents already, and they didn't like the drinking element so that is out as well. Thanks again in advance for any suggestions.

Re: Memorial Service song choice?

Grace is gone is an awful awful idea... I would suggest:

Best of whats around
Pig
so damn lucky
pantala naga pampa
one sweet world
Tripping Billies

Stick with something with a happy vibe. Its a celebration of the girl/guys life. I would say best of whats around, pig, or one sweet world are best. If you have more than one song, you can start with PNP, its a great little song

Re: Memorial Service song choice?

I'm sorry for your loss, peace to you and your friend's family.

If you're looking for something sad/somber, maybe:
Baby Blue
41
Bartender (maybe not since the family didn't like the drinking idea)

But I can also see the need for something a little more positive:
Best of What's Around
Pig
Lie In Our Graves

I agree that Everyday might be a good choice. I'd go with the Luther College version of One Sweet World...and/or Granny.

Re: Memorial Service song choice?

sorry to hear about your loss, I had one of my closest friends pass away from cancer at just 19 last month and we had liog from radio city playing during his wake...it seemed to fit well, after all he said he wanted it to be a party, i find it hard to listen to that song anymore tho cuz it reminds me of it...so you might wanna chose wisely, but its a suggestion

UTTAD #34 would be nice. I also agree with using some happier tunes to celebrate his life.
Sorry for your loss, hang in there.

Re: Memorial Service song choice?

for some reason proudest monkey jumped into my head. if that song fits him/her, that would work.

i also think pig would be really powerful, if that is what you are going for.

its a delicate situation, so i can't firmly suggest anything, those two are the ones that came to mind and may work depending on his/her personality and what you guys are going for.

Re: Memorial Service song choice?

I think that memorial services are a celebration of someone's life -- so you should keep it on a positive vibe... not a depressing one.

Therefore, I agree with Pig.

i would definitely say Lie in our graves. it's a time to celebrate the life that was lead, and reflect on the good. i've already told my friends and family i want that song played at my own, i think it's a really fitting song

Sorry to hear that you even have to think about this, I am with some of the other posts that this should be a celebration, but also try to keep it mellow. A PNP>Best of Whats Around>#34 would be sweet. Mellow, good meaning and upbeat at the same time. Take care

Re: Memorial Service song choice?

First off....thank-you everyone for your suggestions. It's great to have almost like a second family during this time with all the ants. users. Thanks again.

I suggested #34, Pig, and BOWA to my friends parents and they are going to take a listen today. I was a little hesitant to suggest this, but what does everyone think about I'm Alive w/Chesney? I know if you just listen to the lyrics, it seems like the opposite of what you would want. But the more and more I listen to it, I get this feeling calmness and closure from the song. Does anyone else see that in the song? IDK, I could be way off to.

I think "I'm Alive", while the music fits, is a little too bold for a memorial. Typical or #34 is probably the best. I regret suggesting Digging A Ditch, and I really think Pig and BOWA are over the top.

So #34 is my final and standing suggestion, I see nothing more fitting and beautiful to play during his memorial, especially since he was a DMB fan.
