It was during their shows in Texas. The guy turned out to be a district attorney for a neighboring jurisdiction. He flaked on his appearance at the Predator house, but the cops already had enough to arrest him. As they surrounded his house, he shot himself. Besides the Murphy, TX district attorney's office declining to prosecute any of the people nailed on the show, NBC wound up getting sued by the guy's sister.

Dateline actually did another three stings after that, but then it was canceled, in part due to the fuzzy nature of the group that was conducting all the online chats. They were calling themselves non-profit and not law enforcement but were receiving consulting fees from NBC and still turning everything over to the police, which raised questions as to whether they were agents of the police and a whole host of other conflict of interest questions.

it was tougher to conduct stings as well. chris hansen said that people were putting up posts on craigslist and stuff warning pedophiles that there were stings in the area.

Sounds very political, but in the end, they are snatching up child molesters, can anyone disagree? Just my opinion.

Won't argue with the second part, which is a good thing, but I'd call it more than political. The group doing the chats was essentially private citizens performing the police's work but without being subject to the restrictions placed on police by the Constitution, while at the same time, the police were using all of the incriminating information the group gathered. It was this sort of thing that Alan Dershowitz used to successfully argue Claus von Bulow's appeal back in the 80s: all of the evidence used against him by the State was gathered by a private investigator hired by his stepchildren, who then turned over only what he thought could be used in a successful prosecution. If the state had done the investigation, it would have been required to turn over all evidence, including evidence that the defendant was not guilty.

this sting is a little too much work for the typical citizen's arrest. if anything the pedophile could prob sue the person making a citizen's arrest on them

I always loved how over-the-top and ridiculous the arresting officers were. They'd have a guy camouflaged in a giant Tree costume, and they'd always be yelling and tackle a guy down to the ground even if he's standing there with his arms up not moving.

Yeah, that makes sense, just cant say I fully agree with it all. Its like were doing all we can do to put these people behind bars, though were also bending laws and loopholes. Thats alright, hopefully people got the point.
