Re: Stranger Things (New Netflix Original Series)

Finished it earlier this week. Don't read further if you don't want spoilers. I enjoyed it, but I wasn't overly impressed. The 80's nostalgia was great and the music was great. The Sheriff's character was good and well developed.

However, there were a few things I really didn't like. Nancy going into that tree alone without her weapon and after knowing that she couldn't find Jonathan? She's a smart girl (other characters made fun of her for studying too much), there is no good reason for her to act so dumb. Nobody cares about Barb? Why even have her get taken then? What's the point? The government people are obviously quick to kill people (Benny?), but yet they let the Sheriff go without a scratch when he breaks into their secret underground experiments and also tells them he knows everything and he's going to expose them? He was by far their biggest threat. It would seem obvious that of all the people they want dead it would be him.

Overall, I definitely liked the premise (loved Super 8 for comparison) and the style was nicely done with a few well developed points, but it has its flaws for sure. The last few episodes were just a little lazy and required the viewer to suspend belief a little too much.

Spoilers: without barb going missing Nancy wouldn't be involved at all.

They tried to kill the Sheriff with an overdose so people wouldn't freak out. it's a small town. If the Sheriff was killed they would go nuts.

It seems like he made a deal with them at the end so we will see in the second season what happened.

    Regarding Barb,

    1. Body Count/show us that this creature is still a threat out there.
    2. Gets Nancy involved

regardless though, not sure why you think there should be some extreme important point to a small supporting character being killed off...

    Regarding the Sheriff,

It'd be one thing disposing of just a few bodies, but by the point they catch Hopper, the bodies (from both them and the creature) are already starting to mount up. Can't keep killing everyone, especially the damn Sheriff, or else other people are going to become more suspicious. Along with that, they have no idea if Hopper has told anyone else, what all he knows/has told others about, or if anybody knew he was sneaking into their facility that night (hence why the bug him soon after). Chances are, they have faith that nobody will believe him anyway, and/or feel that he'd just imagined it and was going crazy etc.

save for maybe what you said about Nancy, everything else you mentioned was fine.

Surely they could have figured out a better way to get Nancy involved. The entire plot was started when a kid was kidnapped. A second person gets kidnapped in nearly an identical fashion and virtually nobody cares, including the audience. There was a double standard applied to two different characters and the audience is just expected to ignore it. That's lazy.

If it was so important to keep the Sheriff alive, they should have at least acknowledged that compared to how dismissively they killed other characters.

Started yesterday evening and looked up and it was nearly midnight and I had gotten through 5 episodes.

I love the 80's vibe as others have mentioned and I definitely get the super 8 + Stephen King + ET/Spielberg vibe. Definitely really have liked it so far and will be finishing it up tonight. Would recommend if you like the sci-fi/horror genre

Does the theme song remind anyone else of Pink Floyd's 'Welcome to the Machine'?

They did acknowledge it. It was clear in the last scene with him that he made some kind of deal with them when he got in the car.

Just realized there's maybe a subtle reference to Twilight Zone in the name of Episode 2 - 'The Weirdo on Maple Street'; made me think of 'The Monsters are Due on Maple Street'

I'd be interested in learning more about the creature in Season 2.

Like, what was it doing (other than feeding)? From my understanding, it only came into the "real" world because El accidentally created a gate. What did it do prior to having access to food, etc, etc?

Liked this show a lot. Would rather they tell a different story each season, similar to AHS. I think this storyline was wrapped up pretty well, so a new story around the same characters and town might feel forced.

The reasons other people gave, which is what my response was about, were that killing the Sheriff would draw too much attention to what they were doing and to use him to gather more information about who he might be working with. A simple line of dialogue when they were interrogating him or somewhere around then saying, "we can't kill him because it would draw too much attention" would have sufficed. The only reason I say that is because the government people had already shown behavior of quickly killing people who would get in their way. The sheriff was clearly in their way, but they spared him and they didn't really say why.

Anyway, not a big deal. I liked the show, but it wasn't flawless.

On episode 4 now. Episode 1 didn't do it for me but episode 2 was pretty solid. Is this storyline supposed to continue into season 2?

So is this show actually scary or is more a thriller, edge of your seat type?

I'm not a horror guy by any means and I read several reviews saying it wasn't something you'd watch by yourself.

For me it was definitely one of those shows that got less scary/thrilling as they revealed more. But I legit got chills in a few of the early episodes when you have no idea what's going on.

Agreed. Not really "scary", IMO. Just a bit intense at times. I'm not a horror guy either, but I never felt scared watching it. I feel like I would have been fine watching it alone. Granted, I did watch it with my roommate, so I guess I don't truly know haha.

Not a horror guy either, binge watched the whole thing by myself and never felt freaked out or scared. It's more X Files creepy than it is horror/scary movie. I thought it was great fun, really enjoyed it. Def recommend.

Didn't realize the kid who plays Mike is going to be in the 'It' remake. He's playing Richie Tozier in the 2017 reboot

Okay that's really good to hear. I appreciate the feedback. Those articles definitely played up the horror aspect. When it was released I figured it was more thriller than actual horror. I'll probably start watching tonight.

I'm not a horror guy by any means and I read several reviews saying it wasn't something you'd watch by yourself.
There were a couple moments were I was doing the "cover face with hands" thing, except I don't cover my face I just focus off screen somewhere.

It's suspenseful. Depends on your tolerance of scary, I suppose. I'd leave the lights on.

Finished the last 2 episodes last night. I'm very satisfied with this series. Finale was awesome.
