Ah, no, they weren't afraid in the least. If you stand still by the feeder, they'll fly right next to your head. Pretty wild.

Just got a GoPro Hero 3 Black. Really looking forward to playing around with it––I do a lot of whitewater so it will be cool mounting it onto my helmet and getting some video. The picture quality is absolutely incredible as well...very impressed so far.

I got one for Christmas. I haven't used it too much, but it is very impressive. Opens up new possibilities.

I might find an excuse to pick up one of these sometime soon. Love how durable / versatile they are.

One of the nice things is it's virtually impossible to "screw up" a video since there are no manual controls. Virtually everything is in focus all the time and it automatically adjusts exposure dynamically. It's versatility really forces you to think about doing things you would have never even dreamed of doing with a normal camera, so it's really cool in that regard.

The second post of my series is up... Also, I've revised the colors of the website to jive with my branding...

The photos are miscellaneous stuff that I happened to come across the morning I published the post, but I feel like they're interesting and fit the topic in a weird way.

    Thank you, Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8. Other lenses were a 35mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4, 24mm f/3.5 PC-E, and the Fuji X100s.

I noticed in Toledo some of the roofs. Were they really that blue or did you do some edit work on them?

I probably pumped up the saturation. I always mess around with my travel photos to get a specific look.

    Couple initial impressions:

Nice stuff, you've got a consistent look through the images.

Study composition of professional imagery you like. You are putting your subject smack in the middle of the frame for most shots, it isn't the most exciting place to put it. The rule of thirds is a good start, but not something you have to stick to. Your horizons are almost always in the middle of the frame, think about what you're trying to say with your image and put more ground or more sky in the frame. It's more interesting.

Easy on the heavy vignettes. It's easy to be heavy handed with them, but they don't look as nice as you might think. Subtle is better with vignetting.

Consider straightening some of your images. The horizons or verticals are often off just a touch. It makes a big difference if you fix that. If you decide to be off from alignment, make it deliberate and apparent so that it is an artistic choice and doesn't look like sloppiness.

I hope you find the above helpful. Let me know if you have any questions.

    Keep it up!

Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate the details. I never realized how much goes into making a photo really catch someones eye. I will start reading up on photo composition, getting into this I never realized how much a decent lens costs. I was thinking of picking up canon's 50mm 1.8 lens for $100 or should I just spend the extra on money on the 50mm 1.4?

I guess it depends on what your overall budget for glass would be but if it was me and I wasn't trying to make money with photography I wouldn't be investing in the 1.4 when the 1.8 is as good as it is. If you were going to purchase more than one more lens, I would be saving the difference towards something like a 10-22 based on the shots you posted and my guess at what your style might be.

In fact for someone dabbling with a canon rebel line, the 50 1.8, 10-22 and 55-250IS II are a REALLY good set up for the money required with the 10-22 being the only big hit on price (but it's worth it). That particular 250 can be had for ~$200 on sale or from someone stepping up to L glass used.

EDIT: And make no mistake, they are compromise lenses (well, the 10-22 is pretty great) but they are incredibly affordable for what you can get out of them if you do your part.

The 1.4 isn't really worth the extra money unless you already know of a reason you'll need it. It's 2/3rds of a stop faster, so it'll shine in low light, but otherwise it won't buy you much. It's a great lens that wedding photographers use for receptions quite a bit. If you don't find yourself shooting in really dark situations, it's probably not worth the extra money.

^ Don't get me wrong, with lenses you get what you pay for, but the 50mm 1.8's are really good deals from both Canon and Nikon.

With a cropped sensor on my Nikon D3100, would I be better off getting a 35mm prime?

Thanks for the help. I would be willing to spend the extra money, but with your advice I think I will pick up two separate lenses instead.

That's what I usually recommend for general use unless you prefer more of a portrait focal length, which is roughly how the 50mm lens would behave on your camera.

That's what I was thinking cause the cop factor according to the chart I found, makes a 35mm basically a 50mm anyways. Thanks.

I really liked the vertical triptych. The foggy sky made for a really clean image that allowed the colors to pop.

The weather finally coincided with a free day and I was able to take my camera outdoors for the first time since I've owned it. It's a Canon D3000 and it's the first DSLR I've ever owned. I shot a lot in college and do a bit for work now, but never really did it for pleasure. I'm very happy with how it all came out considering how long it's been:

Thanks Ben. Those trees are really tough to show their scale. If you're far enough away to shoot one from top to bottom, you can't see through to it. The triptych was one of the few ways I could semi-resolve the issue...
