One Hell of a Collision

Did anybody catch the collision between Mike Cameron and Carlos Beltran? Cameron suffered a broken nose, multiple fractures of both checkbones, and a slight concussion. Oh yeah, the Mets lost 2-1.

i don't get why people can't call the baseball.

It is easy, little leaguers do it.

black pride. has to be it.

anyway, that picture looks like the start of a porno I once watched. funny, it ended with a broken nose, fractured cheeck bones, and the mets losing 2-1 as well.

Did you actually see what happened? They collided at a dead sprint while both of them were diving! No one should call anyone off a sinker like that because neither of them had a clean shot at it. They're both concentrating on the ball both hoping to be called off themselves. Take it from an outfielder, neither of them had cause to call for that ball. That sucks for Cameron!

I have had 4 concussions playing sports, none football, and wasn't allowed to at that point anyway. The worst was when I was playing leftfield and collided with the SS on a ball he didn't hear me call. I was lights-out for a 1 min (grade 3/worst you can get/eric lindros type) and spent 2 nights in the hospital.

You're absolutely right. The picture in no way does the collision justice. You (and by you I mean the collective you) have to watch the replay on Sportscenter.

I tore my kidney during a collision in the outfield during my junior year. I called it.

I played baseball and know it quite well. As an outfielder, you call the baseball if you want to catch it. They may have both thought they had a play but as soon as Beltran or Cameron decided they were going to go balls out for it, you call the baseball.

I understand they were just tearing in for it, but don't leave your feet without calling it.

I don't know about you guys, but when I played RF calling for the ball just before I dove for it in the gap was always the first thing I did...

...come on..call for it????..you've got to be kidding. both of those guys were selling out for the ball.

I'm sorry, I disagree 100% with this statement. Now, you dont go diving into the CF when he is standing there ready to make the catch, but when the ball is in the gap, and you dont think there is a chance in holy hell the CF will get there you bust your ass to the ball and do what you need to to make the play.

I was a good player, but never played professionally in the minors or anything, college was as far as I got, but I can say that calling for it was NOT going to happen

During your charge in, you call it. If you have made up your mind to sell out, you call it. It is something taught since little league. I totally understand, but someone should have called the ball.

jeeze, im a yankee fan, and i still won't kid around. That was definately scary.

But, this is the problem when you have two Centerfielders in the outfield. Both of them will go all out to catch a ball. And that was just bad timing.

Im just saying what is going through the mind at the time. 100% focus on getting to that ball. I am sure they both thought the other had no chance at the ball. These guys make millions of dollars a year, Id expect them to dive for it, if it means a few broken bones, oh well.

Next thing you know when a WR goes over the middle and gets his bell rung people will be questioning that too. This is sports, full throttle, big time sports. They were doing what they do best.

If this were a collision between an OF and a IF, Royce, Id agree with you, but when two OFs are in the gap, running full speed they most likely had no clue the other was even close to the ball, much less also going to dive for it.

I know what you mean. I was a shortstop by trade and didn't play a ton in the outfield.

They wanted to catch the ball, and that is most admirable. I would rather see guys diving and breaking bones than pulling up and letting it drop at their feet.

As much as I'd love to blame Cameron because I hate him, this wasn't caused because no one "called for it". Just a freak thing when 2 guys are going all out for a ball.

Its a bit harder when 40,000 fans are cheering becasue they think there may be a bloop hit...not to mention everything is blurred when your in a dead sprint staring at the ball...vision and hearing...

wow -- ryan and i agree on something baseball related.

no way in hell either of those guys would have expected the other to be there, and when you're concentrating on a ball, and have no time to camp under it there is little chance that anyone would have called it.

Wait, I thought we ended up agreeing that the Yankees suck

    Just kidding.

By the way, I read the local paper here this morning and they had the worst headline ever for this story. There was a huge picture of Cameron and Beltran smacking grills and above it read "Great minds think alike in San Diego"...huh??
